Re: Any good reason(s) to buy a .303 Enfield?

Enfield's are a great piece of hardware, I love my 1943 Maltby No4. The .303 is a pretty hard hitting round, while the rifle itself is very easy to handle and extremely reliable. I read someplace that when you stack up the bolt action rifles of the major powers in the first half of the 1900's, the a...

Re: Hurricane Sandy - the next "perfect storm"?

sharks don't live in the Atlantic because of the cold waters. :| Hey, this is what I've been told and if I'm wrong educate me. I used to go shark fishing off of Montauk Point, there are a lot of sharks in the Atlantic, and many species that live that far north. You don't need to go far offshore to ...

Re: Hurricane Sandy - the next "perfect storm"?

A few reports to bring from friends/family on Long Island. Most are reporting in ok with little to no damage, and most people accounted for. A few we haven't reached yet, who were likely evacuated due to their low lying homes. No check-in yet from my Mom and Sister. Last call from them was yesterday...

Re: Hurricane Sandy - the next "perfect storm"?

Moved out of NY a month ago, so not suffering directly myself, but have a few family reports from Long Island. One house near the water was already flooded in the lower level prior to noon, with 11 hours to go until the doom tide rolls in. I'm definitely concerned for that house, but they did heed t...

Re: Aurora Colorado Movie Theatre Massacre during movie.

The Reddit read is interesting, and the narratives I'm seeing seems to support a second person involved in this, but maybe not as an active shooter. That was one of my first questions, being how the gunman got in through a fire exit. According to the Reddit narrative, somebody was seen to receive a ...

Re: Aurora Colorado Movie Theatre Massacre during movie.

I'm just flabbergasted as to why they would. Because everyone has their own agendas and axes to grind. And while many people around here are thinking more or less the same thing, we need to remember that this forum is a non-politics zone, and just use the rest of the Internet to bitch about this. E...

Re: Aurora Colorado Movie Theatre Massacre during movie.

I CCW into the theaters, but you know whats a good way to get shot? Using a pistol to engage a rifleman wearing armor at extended distances when you have no cover and no mobility options. I'd run for cover, even if I were strapped. That's not a fight I would care to get into unless I was pinned in ...

Re: Aurora Colorado Movie Theatre Massacre during movie.

Looks like it will be tough to sort this out, there are apparently a number of people named "James Holmes" in the Denver area, which I guess is to be expected. I feel bad for the other folks with that name in the area, they're going to be going through hell for a long time over this, just because of...

Re: Aurora Colorado Movie Theatre Massacre during movie.

News stories are all over the place, as always. Anybody here able to dig up info on the guy yet, like we did with the Laughtner after the Arizona event? My big question is related to the guys mother. Apparently she automatically concluded that her son did it, despite the fact she lives in San Diego....

Re: Irene

Forgot to add these in from the day of the hurricane..... I drove around checking up on friends and neighbors, and found a couple folks who took decent hits. Moms house had a tree down blocking two of the three entrances to the house, minor roof damage but nothing serious. I also went by a house tha...

Re: Lessons Learned From Irene

HK, I agree with you about 95% there, and at the core we're on the same page. However, I think that a sleeping bag is appropriate to have in these cases. Nothing substantial though, more along the lines of a +40 ultralight synthetic bag or something similar. Not for any outdoor use at all, but mostl...

Re: Lessons Learned From Irene

Heck, Apollo, that deserves its own thread. Good information and +1 on keeping stuff on you. This also reminds me of something I heard on the radio while the power was out. Some radio jockeys were interviewing Mayor April Capone of East Haven, and she was asking if anyone in the area could help fee...

Re: Lessons Learned From Irene

Well living on the other coast, i learned that i need to get all the basics done for my preparation, and then think about getting the frilly extras i want in my preps. Still working on my GHB and BOB. The sooner i get them done the better i will feel. They're useless in this scenario. Trust me, I o...

I'll transfer most of this over from the Irene thread in "current events", and add some more. Equipment: -Need a better location for my wind meter, had to take it down since I had to park cars there. Would have been nice to see actual wind speeds. -Need a new sleeping bag, my old one is just too hea...

Power went out after all, but not concenred really... that's what I focused all my prep work onto. Other than that, this event is over for me. Re: Irene

Here is my prediction. 1. NC gets the brunt but they are used to it so lots of beer is consumed. 2. VA, DC, NY get some wind and rain and low lying areas get flooded like usual. Before storm people run around like chickens with heads cut off. 3. After storm people in VA, DC, NY sit around whining a...

Re: Irene

Wind coming up finally somewhat, rain really picking up finally. No significant damage to report. Still about 8-10 hours till peak rolls around, long way to go. Landfall is predicted pretty much right at my location, but weakening enough between NHC updates that I'm starting to relax a bit finally. ...

Here's what I'm looking for.... LED, not incandescent Around the size of an AA maglight, a little bigger is ok.... something I can comfortably belt-clip. Long life as opposed to super-bright. General use type stuff. Durable and waterproof. Can go for either rechargeable or AA powered, but don't wan...

If you're under a hurricane warning, assume the tornadoes even if they don't specify it. Tornadoes are actually pretty common in hurricanes.

Re: Need me a new flashlight

The one that just died on me was actually an energizer hard-case professional 2AA. Liked it a lot, except for that you have to destroy the rubberizing to open it up to service. So I'm looking for something along those lines, but a bit more high end and more easily serviceable. The Tactical Romeo loo...

Need me a new flashlight

Dug back a while, didn't see it covered much, so forgive me if this is redundant. Had an Everready 3x LED flashlight that I really liked, sealed housing and rubberized covering. Batteries leaked, and wasn't able to resurrect it (too many damaged components). So, looking for something new and fancier...
