A different kind of preparedness: scientific literacy
Hi friends, it's been a hell of a time living with all of the complexities related to the pandemic. All of us have been affected in some way, and sometimes it's been tough to just make it through one more day of this. Especially during a pandemic when we're bombarded by information, it seems as thou...

Re: I joined the club
It's been incredibly slow merely getting first my National license and now my State license. Once I get my state license, there's a company I can do a little work for on the side that staffs sporting events and concerts. I'd like to do this for a while and get a lot more experience, as I'd even be w...

Re: Survival of the Richest?
This is tangentially related in that it's related to people in power. In a recent episode of WBUR's Fresh Air, Garrett Graff's book Raven Rock was discussed. The book examines Government plans and programs to preserve itself in the event of various disasters; fascinating stuff.

Thanks to you both, when the cobbler's children are shoeless, the cobbler looks like a jerk. :P It might seem a little cheesy, but one of the coolest things about prepping is the ability to help others and first aid seems to be one of the best opportunities we have for that. Not long after joining Z...

I joined the club
Hey friends... I should probably spend more time on the forums, and plan to, especially in the First Aid section. I've finally got a credential, albeit a basic one. Passed my NREMT-B a couple weeks back and I'm looking forward to some fun interaction and learning some more from the actual medical pr...

Re: 18350 battery! More power for some CR123 lights.
I recently picked up a couple new lights, one of which came with a 16340 and the second that uses 18350 IMRs. The light that uses the 18350s (a Nitecore EC11) has crazy output off the single cell. Given how powerful single cell lights have become, I am getting a little worried about over discharging...

Hi ZS buddies, The admin team owes you all an apology for the forum email notifications having been broken for so long. You're the life blood of this forum, and you've been pretty patient. We put out heads together and seem to have gotten the notifications working again. Mea culpa! Thanks for being ...

The hotel is right next to the Burj Khalifa, both of which are in Dubai and not Abu Dhabi... though the Burj Khalifa was funded heavily by Emeratis in Abu Dhabi. :) United Arab Emirates is a wealthy nation, but who knows what their building codes are like. When I was in Dubai, I was told that buildi...

Re: Ammo can love (and hate)
I'm a fan of the lock kit I linked to earlier because it includes a neoprene washer, a lock nut, and it's made of steel. It allows one to use a padlock with a shackle diameter up to 9/32 inch / 7mm. If you add another washer and add some silicone gasket sealer, you can be sure the hole you drilled w...

Ammo can love (and hate)
Hi everyone, Lately I've been using some of the "Fat 50" (aka linked 5.56) Ammo cans that I picked from ammocanman.com for a very reasonable price. I clean them, lubricate the seals with Super Lube synthetic grease and install a lock kit in them. I noticed some dinged paint one one and some rust on ...

Re: How to discuss terrorism without breaking Rule #7?
George Carlin once reduced the 10 commandments down to 1 commandment, and colloquially on ZS we try to do the same thing by reducing the rules down to one: "don't be a dick". Put much more simply, "be considerate"; it's that simple. We're fed a diet (or we feed ourselves a diet) of stuff that passes...

The linked 5.56 can is also known as a "fat .50 ammo can". If you care about locking up your magazines, you can add one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Ammo-Box-Lock-Hardware-Count/dp/B00SNOQR6Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431009780&sr=8-1&keywords=ammo+can+lock http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i307/ba...

Re: [Boss me around] What to look for as an urban homebuyer
In terms of the home buying process, I'd familiarize myself as much as possible about the process, especially as it relates to where you live. Do people typically use real estate attorneys or is that handled entirely through an escrow agent? How long does it typically take to close? Are there salari...

An interesting point about respecting local knife laws, which I wholeheartedly agree that people should.
