Re: Advice for a first-time homebuyer

Get a quote for home-owner's insurance for the house before you buy. The claim history stays with the property so, if a previous owner burned up the kitchen or flooded the basement, you'll be paying a premium based on that risk. Premiums should be only a few hundred a year for a modest home in most ...

Re: Have you saved a life?

Responded for an allergic reaction in six year old boy at one of the local elementary schools last Wednesday. Kid's one giant hive on the fast track to anaphylaxis and, as I'm coming at him with the epi, he's using what little is left of airway trying to shout "No shots! No shots!" I swear, there's ...

Re: H1N1 pandemic news started 06/11/2009

Health care workers are going to be the first to catch it, too, and will see person after person in high-risk (i.e., already sick with something) groups. I think it's called "common sense"... They aren't being forced to get the shot, it's just a pre-requisite for working in the health care field. I...

Do we still have that pool going on how many banks are going to close by the end of the year? Yes these are the ones I remember. If I left someone out be sure to chime in: .... Things that make you go hmmmmmm .... Government response to the pandemic. Here is a link to a swine flew conference in D.C. they are having next week. Although the government response to swine flu has been sketchy, we can't lay this at their feet. This is basically a marketing exercise by a private...

Re: Employee Emergency Kits

+1 to chemlights and whistles. I would put both on a lanyard to go around the employee's neck with instructions to activate the light for any emergencies. Along with lighting the general area, it would help locate strays during evacuation. As a more "out there" idea, since using whistles with a mask...

Pardon my non-medical brain but what added benefit does Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) provide? Bicarb is good when re-hydrating when fluid loss is primarily diarrhea. Do not use it when there is or has been significant loss due to vomiting since the body is already loosing lots of acid along wit...

Re: Swine Flu Second Wave: How are you prepping & planning?

I think you might be confusing swine flu with the 1918 flu pandemic. Swine flu is more dangerous to the elderly/children/already affected by some other medical condition, however its only slightly worse then the regular flu and a normal healthy person shouldn't have too much more trouble fending it...

Re: Salt storage

In the PAW, you may be needing iodized salt since we will no longer be getting fruits and vegetables from all over the world. There are regions around the world where the trace iodine in the soil is absent so the veggies have none in them. In the US those regions would be around the Great Lakes and ...

To be honest I have just accepted the fact I will get H1N1. Sure I wash my hands but in the end with how infectious it is I will get it. Many of us, even with the best personal precautions, will catch this thing. That doesn't mean it's not worth doing what you can. By avoiding the flu for a couple ...

For real patients, I use a thumbnail into the clavicle. It's a good stimulus and is subtle enough to be done in front of family or bystanders without being noticed. For fakers, My EMTs pratice inserting NPAs. To sort the real from the fake, I will touch the eyelash very gently. The faker's...

While on the subject, skip the Gatorade. It's not meant to help with the diarrhea and vomiting. It's a sports drink and it's marketed as a sports drink. All the sugar in it can actually just make diarrhea worse. But it's great if you're drinking it after you've been working out or something. Here's...

You do not specify a time line. Given sufficient time all of these are possible and likely except perhaps the MJ $1 million bill. What I'm trying to get at is preserving what we have so we don't go bust. Will inflation eat away at hard won savings? Will home equity evaporate or go negative? There i...

Inflation vs deflation. Pick your poison.

This thread over at the unfortunately named doomers.us is an excellent compilation of "expert" opinions about where the economy is heading. I've been researching this since March when the market rebounded. So far, I'm convinced it's going to be deflation for at least a few years. After that, who kn...

This article says that there's not been a lot of luck producing the vaccine the old fashioned way (with an egg). That's the same problem they had with the swine flu vaccine in the '76 outbreak. Production was less than half of a normal vaccine run. This year is eerily similar with the rush to produ...

Do you think Big Finance feels badly about trashing the economy? Neither did I. Re: Kimber 3'' or... should I aim somewhere else

I would aim elsewhere... There is something about a subcompact 1911 that seems more like a Novelty than a purpose built tool. Um, how is that, if I may ask? Why would a 1911 be any different than any other subcompact? Just because it remained virtually unchanged for 50+ years, doesn't make them a n...

Sounds like you handled things pretty well. If your friend was able to walk off the mountain then driving to the ER was reasonable. I wouldn't recommend cleansing any wound with alcohol. Aside from hurting like hell, it will cause further tissue damage at a cellular level. There has been quite a bit...
