Re: LED Shelter lighting

I have quite a bit of experience with the 5050 LED lights. I can highly recommend them. They run natively off 12V. I ran these at Burning Man. One strand will comfortably light up the interior of a small one-room shelter. I put this into a 16' dome with a Reflectix cover (which means it is shiny ins...

My wife and I have the same one. They can be snapped together to form a larger covering that is closer to square.

Re: "Field Stripping" your MREs (56k use caution)

Thread necro. Wanted to clear up a misconception. I was reading a forum post over on mreinfo.com. The guy on that forum is involved with food QA in the Army. His post contradicts the myth that field stripping MREs will shorten the shelf life. There is no difference in shelf life between a field stri...

My portable rig has a scanner antenna on it... I can get 31 channels if I hold my tongue just right. http://www.markertek.com/productImage/HI-RES/DELV-7XLFP1.JPG The HDTV came from Markertek. It is a Delvcam field production pack. The tuner in it is better than anything I've found. You will not find...

Re: Possible Downtime Due to Hurricane Sandy

I was always taught that for every 9 you add (going from 99% uptime to 99.9% uptime, for instance) you can multiply the cost by anywhere from a factor of 2 to a factor of 10.

I work on a facility that supposedly has 99.98% uptime. It's expensive.

Re: Adventures in Electricity

Couple things here. UL Listing is not an absolute guarantee of quality, but it helps. Yes, you might contact UL (they actually have a big lab operation here near Raleigh), and see if they'd be interested. At the least, if you know for sure where you got it, take it back to them & show them. There's...

I'm curious. We all know what nation this defective switch was made in. Was it UL listed? If so, someone is going to want to examine that switch.

Some updated news on Stuxnet. It appears, as some have suspected, that the US and Israel collaborated on the project. This is an unusually detailed article; well worth the read: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/01/world/middleeast/obama-ordered-wave-of-cyberattacks-against-iran.html?_r=3&pagewanted=2&...

It looks like Harbor Freight has this same item with red paint. It is item #67090 for $119. I thought I'd mention it because you can get it with no shipping charge if you have a HF store nearby. The regular price is $129, but with everything at HF, it is on sale. Look around the net for a 20% off HF...

For those of you looking for the squeeze pouch of applesauce, they were selling them at Wally World for a little under a buck each. I found a case of 12 of them at Costco just recently for much cheaper than that. I really don't remember how much they were, to be honest. Just thought I'd throw...

I snagged several pairs of the plastic roll-up dark glasses they give you after eye exams. Don't break, don't take up much room in bags or purses. This is a really good idea. I will keep the pair next time I get my eyes dialated. The first time I went snow blind, I was absolutely flummoxed. Never c...

Re: Deal w/ Freezing Water tank at off-grid cabin

Should consider gathering, filtering, and treating rainwater if well water is not available, then. Personally, I'd dig a shallow well and put in a pitcher pump. Done it a couple of times. Kind of zen.
