Which one of you was on SH225 at 6 this morning?

Used to be pretty active on ZS but have been off for a couple of years. Was driving to work this morning and saw a Ford Ranger with a big ZS logo on the back window that reminded me of it and thought I'd come back and look around.

Re: US in Recession

When the Billionaires aren't investing their money back into the system things will keep getting worse. Won't make a bit of difference. As long as they're sitting on it by depositing it into a bank instead of putting it under a mattress then someone else will have the opportunity to invest it. In f...

Re: US in Recession

That said I have also met a much larger number of unemployed people who have given up the job search and are thus no longer showing up in the unemployment stats. That's my worry - that we've reached a new normal. Initial unemployment claims are at levels normally seen during periods of full employm...

Warren Buffett: Second richest man in America; Ass-talker After his rant on derivatives a few years ago, I'd have to agree with that statement. Really smart people do occasionally say really stupid things. I think he's probably right in this case, I just find it a bit disturbing that so many people...

Bacteria can only breed through the dents if they ruin the integrity of the can. As long as the can is holding its seal, it's just as good as an undented one.

For those who believe in vaccinations, is a good "travel" vaccination regime a worthwhile prep? Are there any third world/poverty related diseases we don't normally vaccinate for in the U.S., that likely to emerge in a protracted, infrastructure mashing disaster? Typhoid, Hep A and B. The problem w...

Open carry of long guns generally is as long as you aren't "brandishing", but possession of firearms is prohibited on state university campuses.

Dang, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Houston. That just leaves Austin and El Paso with water. Time to fortify Lake Buchanan! El Paso is fine now, but a few years ago they were really sweating it. The flow of the Rio Grande actually dropped to the point where the mouth completely sanded up, causing what l...

Re: Interesting conversation today

The story told by the guy sounds like absolute BS. I figured it was a BS story before he even started talking :D I was just shocked when the next line wasn't "can you give me $20 to catch another cab" and figured there was an angle, just not sure which angle it was. The guy's story and actions were...

Interesting conversation today

I was on my way home from work this morning and was pumping gas in a not so nice neighborhood when a guy walks up to me and starts giving me a sob story about how he's a foreigner who paid a cab $500 to take him to a certain address and the guy dumped him and ran off with his money and now he's tryi...

Re: 8.6 earthquake in Chile, TSUNAMI GENERATED

The tsunami seems to have turned out to be a non-event in most places. I realize that NOAA is trying to err on the side of caution with these alerts (or perhaps their models really are that inaccurate), but it makes me wonder it they're doing a disservice in the long run. My wife's family in Tuvalu ...

Actually, the ability to repay the debt is moot, it's the ability to cover the interest payments that is the issue.

Re: Banking Crisis II

The article you linked to makes the common, and incorrect, statement that the unemployment rate doesn't include those who have exhausted their unemployment benefits (the Detroit News article got it right). While the U3 unemployment rate may understate unemployment, I think the U6 overstates it and t...

That explains it, then... Why in the world do we insist on living close to oceans, anyway? The world seems determined to regularly deluge beachfront property... Perhaps, as in the case of my in-laws, it's where they've been living for thousands of years, in addition to the fact that everything in t...

Maybe I'm not thinking this through but it seems to me that allmost everytime a loan gets modified that bank/mortage holder takes a hit. If thats the case, is that really a good long term plan? Depends - in many cases, it's the lesser of two hits. What's worse, cutting a delinquent borrower's inter...

It has a good chance. I think the appellate decision was fundamentally flawed: Judge Frank Easterbrook, an appointee of President Ronald Reagan, wrote in the ruling that "the Constitution establishes a federal republic where local differences are to be cherished as elements of liberty rather than ex...

Damn... What am I going to do with the 200 styrofoam boxes I have been saving up...? Oh well, they are good fire starters :D (I am just kidding) Actually, a lot of the "styrofoam" peanuts these days are actually made of corn starch and not polystyrene and are completely biodegradable (and edible fo...

My wife and I are buying a new home, so I don't think we'll find anything. A friend of a friend of mine was having a new house built and decided to look around in it while it was still under construction, but after the workers had left for the day. He found the workers had strung up a tarp in a bac...

Lead fishing weights are legal in the US? In england we have to use steel or alloy, there was a big campaign about lead weights killing swans. Yup, no issues with them here. :) One of the New England states (New Hampshire? I forget exactly) completely banned lead shotgun shot a couple of years ago ...

Re: 6,000,000 Wild Pigs in the Southern USA

I'm starting to think that it may make more sense to simply find a lodge and/or guide service to accommodate us on our hog hunt this fall... Jamie That's really your best bet. Hogs can be pretty nomadic and will go almost completely nocturnal with the slightest bit of hunting pressure. Your chances...
