Re: Atlantic tropics....

Update #7 This is my last update for this storm, as I have now gone nearly 12 hours without rainfall. The creeks and rivers near me are overflowing but it's resulted in mostly small parks and parking lots being flooded. Most commercial areas are open, although schools are still closed as they're bei...

Re: Atlantic tropics....

Update #6 Heavy rains continued throughout the night and should be staying around for about another 5 hours, although the rain isn't expected to stop for another 24 hours. Some areas along the coast have received 30+ inches of rain, I've seen far less, maybe 4-5 inches so far. Anyone along a river o...

Re: Atlantic tropics....

Update #5 Still have power, although there have been sporadic bands of heavy winds and rain. A few nearby friends have lost power for a few hours but it seems to be brought back online rather quickly (a few hours) each time it goes out. We're supposed to start getting the worst of it (flooding and t...

Re: Atlantic tropics....

Update #4 Posting this morning. In my area there has been no rainfall but it's very overcast and winds are beginning to gust to about 20mph. This morning I already lost power for about 2 hours. While the power was out I spoke to some neighbors and then drove down the street to see that others still ...

Re: Atlantic tropics....

Just received an e-mail from my local government stating to be prepared for 72 hours of loss of electric. Fortunately, my work is taking it very seriously and is encouraging us to take work time to prepare.

Re: Atlantic tropics....

Update #3 Well, the storm is downgraded, which is the good news, but the bad news is it's now projected to essentially pivot around me here in NC. We were originally going to get the Western side of the storm and now we'll get the worse Eastern side as it swings around us. This means I expect to hav...

Re: Atlantic tropics....

Update #2 As I live in NC, the newest forecast has the storm crossing over me sometime Saturday(I'm inland). I have several six-gallon containers filled with water and plenty of food on hand. I've already taken a package of water bottles and frozen them in the freezer. I'll transfer these two a cool...

Re: Atlantic tropics....

I live in the Carolinas, in-land, not coastal. I lived in Raleigh through Hurricane Fran (two weeks without power and a tree through the 2nd floor of the house). I'm generally pretty well stocked (cash on hand, extra gas, months of food, weeks of water, water treatment etc.) However, despite the pre...

Handling Stink during Bugging In

I don't know about you guys but in all realistic scenarios I'll probably be bugging in. I have all my supplies here and know the lay of the land. However, if power/water is out and toilets aren't an option I think most of us will be relying on plastic buckets. For those of us in more urban areas, it...

Re: Small Family Practice Bug Out

One year update on this. Still camping frequently and the kid and wife are still enjoying camping while I'm the mad scientist with all the cool new toys. We've since joined a private club that owns a huge hiking area, campsite, and lake. You have to pay admission or be a member to go but it offers m...

Re: What have you bought lately? (Bug Out Version)

Just bought a few cases of bottled water to rotate the supply and a 7 pound bag of red lentils from Costco for $11 to help provide variety for all the vacuum sealed rice that's in storage.

Purchased a Ruger LCP II 380 for a bigger bang than my little .22 revolver CCW.

Re: Organization of Preps

Well, looks like Irma will be hitting me toward the latter half of the weekend. I'm thankful I organized my preps just a few weeks ago. I quickly hit the grocery store early this week when it was merely a remote possibility and got several cases of water and a few gallon jugs of water. Also stocked ...

Organization of Preps

Hey guys, I just wanted to share an easy and inexpensive organizational strategy that's been working well for me. Once I got my preps to a decent state where I feel okay (you can never feel 100%), I realized I really needed to focus on having quick access to particulars. It's great knowing you have ...

Caliber Consolidation vs Caliber Diversity

Hi all, I'm constantly torn between consolidating calibers or having a diversity of guns. On the one hand, having only a few calibers allows for stockpiling of ammunition and you know you can use it even if one gun breaks or is lost. You can also outfit family and friends with firearms that pull fro...

Re: Prepping activities with young children?

I have a three year old and after taking her camping once she absolutely loves it. Now she happily does anything related to camping. So she loves to pack her backpack, ride with me to get firewood, eat with Titanium sporks, test out tents and sleeping bags, eat any kind of "camping" food. Camping ac...

Small Family Practice Bug Out

Hey guys, I realize this isn't an ideal bug out, but I try to push my family to what they consider the edges of camping and I consider bugging-out. We use a campsite, so we're never far from anything but I try to test out my gear and do these monthly. I have a toddler who has grown quite fond of "ca...

Re: RTIC/YETI Stainless Steel cup.

I can vouch for Yeti being a wonderful product. I have their mammoth 32 oz and it's incredible.

I also got the knock-off, produced by Ozark Trail at Walmart for $10. While the ice retention isn't as good as Yeti, about 12 hours of ice and 5-6 for coffee, still pretty amazing considering.

Re: .22 detachable magazine vs. tube magazine

If one of the OPs initial concerns with a detachable magazine is damage to the magazine making it inoperable I find this to be a fairly mute point on the Ruger 10/22 as the magazine is flush with the rifle. I have about 6 10 round magazines for my 10/22 and once you learn how to properly pop them in...

Re: Some Hobo/Fema Signs for you and yours

I really like the idea of the made up scifi/fantasy language. The only downside is if you're in a rush symbols are faster but for leaving a detailed message you can't beat a "fake" language.

Now to go learn some Dothraki.... 8-)

Re: Cough, Cough, Zed

Day 4 I nearly had to crawl to the creek bed to get water. Once I got back to camp and removed my boot my foot has really swelled up. If they come looking for me I’m not going anywhere. I really thought those two plastic water bottles would have been enough during the night but I’m beyond thirsty. I...

Re: Cough, Cough, Zed

I've been unable to sleep tonight so my insomnia (am I turning into a Zed?! ) is your benefit as I decided to write further. Day 3 I guess the fact that I’ve been able to write day 3 kind of gives it away huh? I’ve snuck out of town but it wasn’t the smoothest of moves. I don’t think they’ll...
