Re: Long-term stock market investment

Disclosure: I hold a long position in SO stock as well bonds. Et-tu, Brute? SO=97K. PTRAX=43K. MM=32K. and many others across the whole spectrum shown far above. Some of which do suck. This is not to be construed as advice, just some guys bragging :D EDIT: @Raptor: great info on the 'divide...

Re: Long-term stock market investment

I'm not going to give advice. I'm just going to point at stuff . Do dividend paying stocks defy the general market? (it's been sucking pretty bad lately) Brexit? Schmexit. You can see it hit on friday the 23rd. This is why I can sleep at night. Red line is the S&P 500 (the stock market). Blue is SO...

Re: Tunafish class action settlement. Are you affected?

I don't understand how a cat can catch a tuna. :? 2 hay hooks, Some 100mph tape, 300ft of 1/8th steel cable, 1 brick and a blindfold. Everything else is nature and evolution at play. The hard part is getting a really pissed off cat with hay hooks attached to its paws back in the boat. It was a bit ...

Re: Tunafish class action settlement. Are you affected?

Evan - sorry you missed the boat with the Star-kist. Maybe keep your eye on the Trader-joes problems. Just make sure your in-tuna with the "people who can claim". It's possible you may net some fish or reel in some $. Those puns are much more tasty than a can of Star Kist tuna! Personally I ...

Every once in a great while I seem to have something intelligent to say, but not anywhere near 186 times. :clownshoes: Have #187 on me. Coming from a guy that actually owned a Major Havoc arcade machine. Hated getting rid of it, but the location guy just wouldn't give it up. Traded me his Dig-Dug c...

Re: Long-term stock market investment

..Tl;dr version: you're better off using your nest egg to buying part of the entire market through an index fund (with their minuscule fees) than you are paying a high-profile financial firm 2% to pick stocks for you. The 2% fee, combined with inflation, eats up almost all of the market's natural g...

Re: 1990 GMC Sierra starting problems

Replace the starter. It has 4 brushes that work in pairs. If one doesn't touch the commutator, only 2 work and will draw enough power to heat the cables but won't turn the engine. If you're not sure, tap the starter with a hammer and it will start. If it does, change it. Corrosion inside the cables ...

Re: EMP "Safer" motorcycle for bug out

I keep scratching my head over this "EMP" stuff. I spent some time at Kirtland AFB, NM. The place where they test aircraft for EMP issues. And trucks, and radios and, and, and. You know, by the military that owns and has used nukes.... The main pulse generator in use there will output 50KV/meter. S...

Back on track here is the latest one, time to get your flashlights and batteries ready. NASA has confirmed that the Earth will experience 15 days of total darkness between November 15 and November 29, 2015. The event, according to NASA, hasn’t occurred in over 1 Million years. http://www.timesofedu...

Re: Baseball bat modifications

Myself? It would be one more caliber to stockpile with a very niche position. I already have +P 9mm and .45. I already have 5.56, 7.7x39, 7.62 NATO, and .45-70. Clearly you have evolved above needing a well decorated baseball bat. It must be nice to be well off. For those that have nothing, and can...

No, not really.
Watch this 'baseball bat' sell for less than $400:

It's got the good rear sight on it too

Possibly not the best source, but Gunbroker isn't giving me a result anywhere close to $350. The closest is maybe Auto Ordnance at close to 700 smackers... There are plenty out there, you just gotta shop. These all sold for $450 or less. Most need work, which is what I do: http://www.gunbroker.com/...

Seems there are only one or two in a large county and none in smaller counties. Spread out with such low numbers will be hard to get together. If I had a baseball bat (unlikely, since us British tend to have cricket bats), I would modify it in a more Medieval way, they seriously had the right idea back then. Re: LONG term powered vehicle lifespan?

So, had a crazy idea that I want everyone to shoot down. I started looking at the detroit diesels and it sounded like they were most efficient in a stationary application, what about a hybrid diesel-electric vehicle? you could use a small detroit (like one of the 2-cylinder ones), run it at a const...
