Look what my 5 year old got me for Christmas (new EDC pics).

...now I know this is a bit belated but I'm taking advantage of my recent encounter with a digital camera. So what did my 5 year old get me for Christmas?

^...and a Leatherman Pouch, Leatherman Kick & Leatherman C300.

Image
^The Old and the New: My now retired ol' faithful daily beater and it's replacement, the C300.

Image
^The old school leather pouch that ol' faithful used to live in now permanently occupied by the Kick.

These two are now the bones of my first line gear edc. To be truthful I was already wearing them several days before christmas and had to rebox them and wrap them so my five year old could give Daddy his presents.

I wanted something I could wear with a suit everyday that could still function on the weekend or if TSHTF. Sort of a gentleman's rig - sunday go to meeting meets edc thing.

Sure there's still a Surge/Surge Ti in my future but that might end up in my gear as the little Kick is growing on me. I find I don't miss having the saw or scissors from my Wave days and the weight and low profile slimness is certainly nice. The multi-tool's knifeblade is as sharp as can be expected and has embarrassed even thick rope.

I'm loving the Blade-Launcher on the C300 and I wonder at how I got through life without a flipper before. One down side to the C300 compared to my ol' faithful is due to it's thinner blade and spear/drop point tip it's not as good as the old girl's thick clip point for cleaning the dirt out from under my fingernails.

Excellent gifts. Loks like they have some influence from you? Better to teach them young as the world is only getting worst and they have to surviven this world the previous generation created.

5 year old's have the power to con money out of their parents by the power of cuteness alone. This power seems to fade with age and the onset of puberty and teenagerisms. At 29, I can occasionally con my old man into buying me a beer. other than that...

I think you have all missed the point entirely - TGC is breeding!

There are more of them! It's the end times! Is..is that a man on a pale horse I see?

Call me Legion, for apparently I am many.

Yeppers, I'm a breeder.

The 5 year old went to the circus and got some bread called the one off pre-christmas stimulus package payment. She gave the bread to her Daddy who paid some bills and gave a big whack of it to Santa to get the 5 year old her Christmas presents. With what was left she rang BCF about the Leatherman knife and multi-tool combo deal for $99.00 that they were advertising on the telly.

She then got in the car and drove to not one but four different BCF stores across the central and northern suburbs of the vast metro area in her daddy's car. Each store that she had phoned ahead had not checked thier inventory properly so she would have to drive to the next store that supposedly had it in stock. Eventually the trail ended up in far flung northern Joondalup (also known as the end of the freeway) @ the Joondalup BCF.

Here there was a nice, well informed lady who upon hearing of the 5 year olds tribulations took the last one off display and gave the 5 year old a discount that was enough to buy her daddy the zombie training films that were on special at one of the big chain stores @ $5.00 each.

I think she must really love her dad to go to all that trouble.

On the Leathermans (Leathermen?!!!) and raising children thing - She knows they are tools and what they are for. She revels in the fact that she is involved in thier use - even if just observing - because "she gave daddy those tools". 8)

Mine doesn't seem to. :? Maybe they are talking about one of the other models that are refered to.
I hate to think there is an "extra" on a knife I've carried day and night for almost 4 and a half months I don't know about/haven't played with yet.

What sharpener/stone do you use? How often?

Ummm no mine doesn't have a lanyard ring. You did just have me searching my knife for one though. It must be an optional extra or referring to another model knife. I know the C33/C33X had a big landyard hoop on it for example.

As for sharpening, you're going to love this bugger. I use mine daily on plastic ties and cardboard, and cardboard is usually a fucker for blunting knives. I rarely sharpen my blade. It holds an edge fantastically. Usually its a trade off between a fine edge and a longlasting one but this one has both. Which is probably why it's my EDC.

When I do sharpen it I use a two grade diamond whetstone. I use the rough side to take out any tiny burrs in the blade and the fine side to polish the edge back to it's sharpest. Comes out a treat.

Saw this on the EDC thread so sorry for the necro but you EDC a blade? I carry my Leatherman Wave on my belt when I'm going to/from/at work but if I was to have that on me without having a very good reason then I'd get raped... (and even for my work I could get an arsehole cop still arrest me)

Maybe it's different for your state, I dunno.... just curious.

If I wasn't 19 then I wouldn't worry so much, but as a young white male who's frequently in the city I wouldn't risk carrying even my MT in the current environment.... It would be so handy if I had it in there but our law says no :(

EDIT: Actually I shouldn't bring race into this, and it's not really true that I have the most to worry about police scrutiny compared to some others anyway.

No worries mate, it's a fair question. And yes, I do edc that C300 (and the Kick) every day. 95% practicality and 5% principles.

Practicality is obvious - I'm a tool using human and it's a tool. Cutting open boxes, the annoying plastic bags that happy meals toys come in, sachets of roo mince, you name it. It gets used everyday without me even thinking about it, because it's there in my pocket on the clip and with the flipper (I don't even use the thumbstud anymore) it's instantly there - handydandy - job's done and it's gone. Just on the weekend I did an expedient field adjustment on my dog's collar while we were on an energetic "revved up" walk. Problem solvered in nothing flat.

Principles is a bit vaguer - When I was in my formative years I ate far too many Bushido burgers and drank far too many Chivalry shakes. Some of the mentality has stuck with me and I've got this thing that a 'gentleman' never goes unarmed in public, even if it's just symbolically. In Japan the nobility would wear these tiny ceremonial tantos for just this reason. And beyond that I kinda think it's my right as an upright walking, tool using hominid to carry one of the things that upright walking, tool using hominids use - however symbolically.

Here's the WA legality as I understand it.

1) It's within the legal limit for a "carryable" knife. The rule of thumb according my law enforcement friends is literally that, a "rule of thumb". If the blade is shorter than the officer's thumb then it's good to go. There is an actual legal length which I'm pretty sure is sub 3".

2) It's not concealed. It's worn on the clip. I ain't hiding nuthin' here. :)

3) It's not a weapon. Now there are two components to this, one is does it look like a weapon and the other is intent. If it was a Hissatsu folder I'd have a hard time proving it wasn't a weapon based on looks alone. Those things are stabby genius and are obviously made to stop a fight. The little C300 looks like it was made for cutting open boxes, the annoying plastic bags that happy meals toys come in, sachets of roo mince, etc. Also, it has the word Leatherman on it and I have it's companion piece the Kick with me. It's a tool.

The second component, intent is usually proved in an expedient manner in the field with the following Jedi mind trick the police and transit guards are trained to use.

Officer: So if someone attacked you would you defend yourself with this?

[Hint: If the answer is "yes" you're going to jail, copping a fine, spending time in court, losing your knife or any combination thereof]

Answer: Hell, no. I'd cut my self up more than the other guy surely. Look at it, it's not really designed for fighting at all, sir. It's a tool.

4) Why are you carrying it? Cutting open boxes, the annoying plastic bags that happy meals toys come in, sachets of roo mince, etc. It's a tool - I use it all the time.

Now there's a new twist to this... certain areas have recently been declared 'zero tolerance no weapons' areas. The city, the nearby red light district (sorry, entertainment precinct) and so on. Day or night, random stops, searches (and seizures) of random people regardless of age, race or social status, in the course of thier employment or otherwise... If I have it on me in one of these areas I'm probably going to lose an irreplaceable christmas present from my daughter (they don't make the C300 anymore) due to the 'zero tolerance' part - so that's something I have to consider.

Ohhh, see in VIC you need a legal reason to carry any blade of any length. Opening boxes, happy meals, etc aren't "legal reasons", legal reasons are something like work, sport and recreation. Now sport and recreation are very loose terms, however it basically comes things like hunting and martial arts that train in knife fighting.

If you're not working then you've really gotta prove that whatever you were doing, going to do or coming home from doing was absolutely necessary that you have a knife on you.

Haha I remember waaaay back when we went over to Melbourne for the big Guns n Roses/Skid Row concert the city decided to blanket ban everything remotely weapony including studded belts ON THE DAY. How the fuck was I supposed to keep my pants up? I was going to a metal show and my unstudded belts were on the other side of the continent.

You do know that the freeway now ends @ burns beach road, another 15km further north right? :) And I only live around the corner from Joondalup BCF, so next time you're planning on heading up that way, drop me a PM or something and perhaps a beer could be in order :)

Haha sprung. Can I get a pass because I refuse to acknowledge that the city extends any further north than that because denial is awesome?

One day you'll have to admit that it extends as far as Alkimos and even further if the plans all go ahead (which they will! :)).

Yeah, the Oztent is pretty sweet. Only used it once so far (over Easter long weekend) and plan on giving it a go this weekend out in Chittering somewhere :) I preferred the roof top tent I had on the Patrol, but Princess Lucy (our lab) didn't like being locked in the car at night!

Yeah, definitely let me know about beers, very keen to meet others and make friends and get under the influence with people ;)

Oh, and to keep on topic, as my last post wasn't, nice presents!
