Help Festus plan his January Camping trip! (and come along!)

Postby Festus Hagen » Sat Dec 13, 2008 11:54 am

Ok, I have a running goal of camping once a month, every month for a rolling year. I'm up to date since July :)

December is already out of the way, March is too far away to seriously think about, and February is already spoken for with the WCT. Leaves January.

My favorite local campground closes for the season this weekend. A cross-country ski trip up in the 'Dacks is a possibility (and a real test of my gear for the WCT for sure). For a lighter duty trip, THIS PLACE in CT is open all year, although it's sort of an odd place and at $35 a night, rather pricey (not that I mind spending, but $35 in gas could get me somewhere better, know what I mean?).

What other ideas you guys got? Who's coming with???

The only real "rules"... has to be within reasonable driving distance (I'm not flying south to go camping so forget it), and it needs to be legal (no commando camping in a NYC park as much as I like the idea LOL!)

Have you thought about the Catskills? Though the heated bathrooms of a campground are great, you can technically camp anywhere in the state park system as long as you abide by the basic rules.
If I can get my new sleeping bag in time for this, I'm definitely game.

I hadn't, but the Catskills are good. Heated bathrooms? Nice when you get them I guess, but not needed. In fact they seem almost like cheating

Hey Outoforder... can you recommend a specific place in the Catskills? Most important to me is a safe place to park that is likely to be relatively cleared of snow (no 4wd here). An outhouse at least would be nice.

Barring that, I might call it for Gentile's Campground in Plymouth CT.

I'm thinking January 9,10,11 (in Friday afternoon after work, two nights, brunch somewhere around and home on Sunday).

Anybody in???

I generally go up by my cabin so I don't know many of the campgrounds. Let me look through some guidebooks today and see what I can dig up. I'm tentatively up for it either upstate or in CT.

I found another possibility, there's a place near Monticello called All Seasons Campground. Seem to be open all year... I'll give them a shout this week and see what the dealie is (if they have a website, I can't find it).
