I've been able to smash into coconuts with metal marbels before, so it looks like they could POSSIBLY smash into a skull.
Plus they are relatively cheap, you can use any kind of ammo in them that will fit in them, plus reloading is a lot faster than with crossbows.

Thats kind of the agreed apon test here, if it can smash a coconut it can smash a skull.
