You should be saving up on a better mode of transportation if you have no gun.
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own...

Barnett Industries seems to be a UK based manufacturer/dealer in bows and so forth.

Grand National Archery Society seems to have some information of interest.

A crossbow or longbow seems better than nothing, good luck!

A regular bow would be next to useless unless you were extremely well practiced. A Crossbow would be a little more idiot friendly. Better than nothing.

A crossbow can be usefull for silencing a lone zombie quickly and quietly. But a miss and you're done. These things are HARD to pull back, and nearly impossible if you don't have the special acessory designed for that.

there's a thread one here somewhere about the EXOmax crossbow that i started sometime back. It's made in canada and should be able to be shipped ot the U.K. It's pricey, but it's also pretty much the most powerful and accurate crossbow on the market.

Here's a link http://www.excaliburcrossbow.com/maxim.html

Ahh yes. I remember mentioning it in my british gun laws thread as an alternative. Didn't work out terribly well there either.

basically..a crossbow is a good weapon for the long haul. Because...well..you can MAKE crossbow bolts...most people can't make bullets. All you need for a functional crossbow bolt is wood..and a way to fireharden the wood....and a knife for carving the wood..which you better have anyway. Other than that..a crossbow is a weapon with a lot of piercing power and a decent range that is easy to use. It may not be fast...but when you'r low on ammo..it'd make a good support weapon. Here's a scenario....It's about a year after the SHTF...you'r scavenging around for food, water, ammo, etc. You'r low on ammo..and so you don't want to waste ammunition. You turn down a hallway and two shamblers block your path. Do you want to waste your bullets on them or try to engage them in melee combat? ...wait! You have a crossbow...the ammo can be MADE from 2x4 boards!....i'll just shoot one in the head (a crossbow sure as hell can pierce a skull; with no more chance of curving around the skull than a bullet has.) Then...i'll load another bolt and shoot the other one. Bam...problem solved without wasting ammo or endangering my life. And crossbows aren't that heavy.

Canadian Firearms Centre wrote:Q. Do the licensing and registration requirements apply to bows?

Crossbows that can be aimed and fired with one hand and crossbows with an overall length of 500 mm (about 19.68 inches) or less are prohibited. Individuals cannot lawfully possess a prohibited crossbow. Licensed businesses may possess prohibited crossbows for a purpose set out in section 22 of the Firearms Licence Regulations for businesses.

Businesses and individuals do not need a licence or registration certificate under the Firearms Act to possess other types of bows, including crossbows that are longer than 500 mm and require the use of two hands.

If you plan to use a bow for hunting, you may need a hunting licence and there may be restrictions on the size and type of bow that may be used under provincial hunting regulations (contact the applicable province for more information). For example, some provinces do not allow crossbows for hunting.

A modern repeating crossbow could prove useful.
