Hi Tank Woman - I am also stuck (for now if not forever) with a cane; I've seen one far heavier cane that is made from iron gas pipe with a hardwood dowel epoxied into the center; I'm a large guy & had one hard near fall a while ago, fast reflexes & lots of luck saved me but bent my aluminum cane a little (in compression even) - So I'm thinking of making myself one as the original manufacturer is (AFAIK) not selling them ATM. He brushed the cane's barrel with black epoxy paint or the like, to make it look wood-like. (I figure if I break that thing I'd have broken most *everything* and wouldn't care.) It'll be heavy but it'll be unbreakable, and backup as a thwapping stick if worst comes to worst. Unless I decide to go with wood (bloodroot IIRC is one solid wood? Or PurpleHeart.)
I am using a "T" handled, too-lightweight aluminum cane ATM - Dr's / PTers "suggested" I use a quad cane - after I tripped over the dang thing a few times and almost fell from that, and knowing that I have good reflexes despite the messed up knees, I bailed on the thing and started using the Aluminum cane. It's quite ANNOYING when it hits something, tilts 45 degrees and the rear foot catches your foot in mid-step. Dangerous even.
Also - have you seen the Able Tripod Cane Tip?
http://www.amazon.com/Able-Tripod-Cane-Base-shaft/dp/B000B7MPKK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hpc_3 It looks nice if you need a little more stability or convenience (you can bring the cane upright if dropped by using the tripod base as a lever, with your foot.) Safer IMO than a quad cane, also. I plan to see about printing my own on 3d printers, as they'll cost me more like 50 cents that way - I imagine they'd wear if you didn't put some sort of rubber under them though? (I'm thinking on what to do there.) Can you tell I'm a techie type? If you want to try one I'd just need to know the diameter of your cane tip (it won't be this week I think, I am getting set to get 3d printer access, just a few swamps to drain first!) and figure out how to get it to you etc.
Hmmm; Do you like the handle on that cane better than a "T" shaped top, BTW? (T shaped don't require a tubing bender be used, I'm debating which to do. I'd probably 3d print an ABS plastic handle, put a LED flashlight inside etc.) The Quad Cane had that on it's top, I could hack the bottom off it but naah too little challenge?
While sword cane could be fun, I'm sure those are illegal here. Pass

From Ghandi's essays "The Gospel of Nonviolence": "My nonviolence does not admit of running away from danger and leaving dear ones unprotected. Between violence and cowardly flight, I can only prefer violence to cowardice. I can no more preach nonviolence to a coward than I can tempt a blind man to enjoy healthy scenes."
