Sig P228 or Beretta M9

Postby Gunnerx5 » Sat Jul 07, 2012 9:29 am

Ok so I am trying to decide on a daily carry weapon. I have narrowed it down (after firing about 500 rounds through both) to a

Sig Saur P228 9MM

or

Beretta M9 9MM

The Beretta has a nice feel to it, but my Father owns a P228 and i have ran 1500 - 2000 rounds through it, and while it doesn't feel as nice I am more familiar with it.

What are you collective thoughts on the two weapons?

The 228 or M11 seems like the logical choice for ccw . If open carry , either would be a good choice .

Sig P228 or Beretta M9

P228, I've got both an early 90's 228 and a remarked m11 and I love them. Never had a lick of trouble from the nearly 20 year old one.

I've only fired a few mags through a Sig .40 cal but I gotta say it's a nice platform, much better than the M9, for me at least.

I carried an M9 since they were first introduced to the Army in the early 90s and never became a fan.

My vote's for the Sig, but go with what you're most comfortable with.

Daily carry weapon as in what? LEO duty weapon or civilian CCW?

The M9 (Beretta) was not exactly designed to be a concealed weapon, it is a full-sized handgun intended for use as a duty weapon for police and military. I carried one for a long time in the military and I bought my own, because I got to know the platform very well and can confidently perform most repairs. My pistol is new and has not needed any work, but I have seen a lot of the common problems due to wear and tear and I know how to fix them when they do creep up. I would carry the M9 because I am very confident in this weapon, but I know others will (vehemently) disagree. To each his own.

The M11 (Sig P228) is a compact version of the P226, designed more for concealment, so if a CCW is what you are looking for this would be a better choice. I have not fired one of these so I cannot speak about how great a platform it is, but I am familiar with other Sig Sauer handguns, and they do make some solid guns (with the exception of the Mosquito).

Also, someone is going to tell you very soon to get a Glock 19. We use them where I work now, so I have no choice in the matter, and it is the sidearm of choice for many officers and civilians. I think they give you cancer, but that's just me looking for a reason not to like Glocks.

And, why not drop by the Introductions thread and post a little bit about yourself? Thanks.

As a duty weapon or open carry get the one that feels best to you.

If your going to carry concealed get a compact its easier to conceal so you will be more likely to carry it once the new wears off.

My vote is for the Sig P228, but only if you can find a West German one. I had one years ago that I traded and I regretted it soon after that. I saw someone selling one a few months ago and I jumped on it. It's one of my favorite handguns.

While (as others have pointed out) it depends somewhat on what you mean by "daily carry" (concealed?open?) I'd go with the SIG. I do like the Beretta 92's/M9s, but I prefer SIGs over them. If you want open carry I'd just suggest getting whichever your prefer. If it's for concealed carry the P228 will have a noticeable advantage over the M9 due to it's more compact size.

I've owned a Beretta 92FS for literally half my life. It was my first handgun, and my dad bought it for me when I was 16. I've got more rounds through it than any other center-fire gun I own or have ever touched. Probably more than all of them put together. I took it to MilCopp in June and, despite some 16-year-old weak magazine springs, it ran flawlessly. I love this gun. It's a part of me, and I will never sell it. In fact, I'll be getting another Beretta 92 with a rail and replaceable sights at some point in the next 5 years. I said all that Beretta love to say this:

Get the Sig. The Beretta is a wonderful, good-feeling, heavy, outdated pistol when it comes to modern techniques for handgun handling. I simultaneously am utterly attached to mine as well as never recommending it as a good purchase when someone is considering a pistol.

It's a wonderful gun that is bested by many other wonderful guns since it's invention.

I am a Sig man all the way; but if the Beretta feels that good in your hand, then go for it. Beretta is a good weapon.

Just my two cents…my first pistol I purchased as a Sig P228 back in 1993; still have it. I just recently acquired a Beretta 92F Centurion; same as an M9 but with ¼” less barrel. I’ve been carrying the M9 for the past 15+years of service and had an opportunity to carry an M11 for a couple years with one unit.

The P228 is a much more concealable firearm than the Beretta; if concealment is your primary option for carrying that would be the obvious choice. If you’re just open carrying, it’s less of an issue. My only complaint over the years with the Beretta is the slide-mounted safety. I’ve trained on palm-grabbing the slide after a reload or malfunction drill, and almost every time I sweep my palm over the Beretta slide, I hit the safety and lever it down. Sure, it’s a training issue which I’ll admit, but I still think the slide-mounted safety is a bad location and even worse if your technique involves palming the slide to put into battery or for malfunction drills.

Other than that, I’ve never had any issues with either the Beretta or Sig. The Sig is simple and easier to carry concealed...my choice would be the P228 between the two.
