Muzzle break stuck on AK. Advice on removing?

Postby ultra magnus » Tue Jul 03, 2012 12:13 am

I've got an SGL21 that has the default Kvar AK74 muzzle break. I was wanting to swap to a flash hider, but can't get the break off. I am depressing the little post, and putting a lot of pressure on it but it's just not budging. Help?

Just in case (you probably already have this covered) -
Left hand threads.
Righty loosey, lefty tighty
Bass Ackwards
Apply some heat, wrap in leather, and crank with some leverage.

lol yep, they put the threads on backwards to what we're used to. Rotate the other way!

One thing to keep in mind is make sure that isn't a 14.5" barrel with a pinned or soldered muzzle brake to make it the legal length of 16". If so you will end up with a illegal SBR unless you pin or solder on the new muzzle brake.

Not so on the SGL- those are 24mm Right Hand threads, as opposed to the 14mm LEFT HAND threads on a regular AK muzzle. Soak it in Kroil to get the crap out of it, and just apply a little torque- should not be hard to take off.

Assuming this is the brake you speak of ^, then:
If you're not so worried about any cosmetic damage to the brake itself, you can shove the largest steel rod/bar through the ports and get pretty good torque that way. It shouldn't damage the brake much and you can get pretty good leverage that way, without having to need -too- rigid of a vice/hold on it, so long as you put roughly similar pressure on either side of the brake.
