No, but I have used Fritos. Those little suckers really burn. Not bad tasting either.

Why do you say it's so fake?

While I agree that the oil in the orange peel is flammable. And while I agree that using a dried orange peel as tinder works. And while I agree that you can squirt orange peels at a flame and it will flare up. The act of lighting a non-dried, solid orange is what I call fake.

The video itself appears to be using alcohol in the pit that he dug out, to burn.

I thought it looked like an alky flame too, but it *could* have been oil vapor... I just don't see how there was enough time for friction heat to occur...

He scoops out maybe one segment of the orange, go try and make a fire with orange juice.

Now try doing this after you've injected an orange with isopropyl alcohol and a cleverly concealed ignition source.

It may work, however I think this particular video is fake.
They purposefully kept a camera on him (not the orange), by the time they moved camera down it was already lit. Either he lit it, or one of his buddies did.
The entire video is under 3 minutes long. You may need a little more time than that for friction to ignite whatever it is igniting.

i can tell you that this method of making fire does work. us FL boys use orange/friction fires all the time when in the woods...

Of course it is fake, just look at what other videos are selected on the side.

If you still don't think so, pour a bag of oranges into an already burning fire and see what happens, does the fire get bigger or smaller?

Now, as some of you are aware an orange peel has a bit of oil in it and if you take a fresh peel and fold it in half next to a candle flame you get some cute mini pyrotechnics but that is about it. About the only handy trick I know to do with orange peels is you can use the oil as a cleaner for stains on wooden surfaces, so you can rub a stain with a piece of peel then follow with a paper towel and it can do a fair job frequently but that has nothing to do with making fire.

If you are still in doubt, when you get proficient with making fire with flint and steel or with a bow drill you'll learn how absolutely critical it is that everything be as absolutely dry as possible. You can get into trouble even by putting a clump of tinder in a T shirt pocket on a hot sunny day and 20 minutes later enough perspiration has steamed off you to prevent it from lighting. Now think of an orange, the things they make orange juice from.
