In regards to the plate, the Russians thought it was important enough to include on all their folders, why go half-ass?
So, the SLRs would be able to share parts with pretty much every other 7.62 AK on the market whereas the SGLs use internal parts that are vastly similar to (if not the same as) the AK-74?

Not sure, but certainly greater parts compatibility than with the SGLs. My beef with them is they use an AKS-74 style trunnion instead of AK-74M, so their solid side folder is at a weird angle compared to the SGL-21.94, which is correct.

Most definitely. The only regret I have is not purchasing another SGL21 with the money I used on my current SGL's accessories. Those accessories will be around for quite a while still: the SGL I wanted to get for the girliefriend? Unfortunately, no one knows for sure.
EDIT TO ADD FOR BEARCAT: I figured the Russians put it on for good reason. It may just me buying into it, but at $15.00 tops for a reinforcement plate (including shipping), I figure it's worth doing regardless. Peace of mind without taking a giant piece of my wallet's money-entrails.

Well the point I'm getting at is if it is deemed a worthwhile feature, if all it is is a steel plate with some screw holes, we could make that ourselves.

Well, it looks like a steel plate to me that's shaped to match the top of the PG. It's welded on, though.

After a quick search, http://www.bing.com/search?q=ak+pistol+ ... -SearchBox it seems like these are mean't for folding stocks where mine is a solid stock. I don't think I need one then, correct? Also, some have rivet holes which aren't a big deal. I'm fairly confident I could make one, just not as pretty.

I believe a fixed stock would make a vertical drop onto the pistol grip impossibru. Since mine has a folding stock, though, I've been looking into it. I figure getting one would do two things: possible "insurance" in the event I need it some day and the fact having it would make my rifle "correct" since AK-103s have one.

I gotcha, I thought this was a standard on ALL AK variants. Party on.

Nope. Just one of those folded stock things. Since Arsenal had to relocate the trigger and stuff for my SGL during the conversion, I think they just skipped on the plate because most of their rifles are fixed-stock anyway.

Couldn't agree more. It is a precision weapon. It will jam at the precise moment you need it the most.
