Just broke down and paid full price for "Dances with Dragons".

Netflix released the series last Tuesday. Says "long wait". :(

Whoops. I guess it may be!

That might start looking a little like "Cowboys and Aliens".

"A Dance with Dragons". :D

I started watching it the first day I read this thread. Holy awesomeness. I should be doing schoolwork, however instead I'm watching it right now. Now if I don't fail this class I'm not working on right now I can start reading the books when I am done with school in a month.

Finished watching S02E01 "The North Remembers". Kind of hard to watch Joffrey's vengeance on his "cousins", but Martin never pulled punches before, and no reason to now.

Edited the thread title since its a good bet this series will go the distance of a season per book.

Not sure how that will work as books 4 and 5 were originally one big book 4. Kind of wish HBO made these two hour episodes for the amount of material not included.

Heard they upped the budget this season, though much of it is going to episode 9, The Battle of the Blackwater.

Yeah, that was a little brutal. At first I thought they were just going around and killing male kids, but then realized that was all of the Kings bastard sons. They didn't really explain what was going on until they asked about the blacksmith kid that Ned had talked to. And the dude with all of the daughters/wives creeped me out. And what's up with the chick not dying from drinking the poison. She looks like bad news. I also learned to never watch it with someone that has read the books and is doing a running commentary the entire time. It looks like it'll be an awesome season.

Wait till you see what Craster does with HIS sons.

Melisandre is one of the very few examples of magic use in the series, apart from the White Walker's undead, and Daenayeris withstanding the funeral pyre.

Yeah, I figured it was something to do with magic. Her amulet looked like it was glowing/pulsing as she drank the wine. And the wolf looked awesome. I remember the body of the mother being huge, and I seem to remember somebody saying they grew really big in the books.

Just finished watching the whole HBO series. Pretty much averaged one episode a night over a two week period.
Watched because my 16 yr old son was such a fan.
I must say having someone available who could answer "who's who" as the huge cast of characters keep popping in and out of the story was useful. My son has the added attribute that he is capable of keeping quite when not asked and didn't give away outcomes, even as I regularly tried to guess how things would turn out.

He has already started the novels, but plans on only reading after the corresponding season from HBO has aired.

I've got to give credit to HBO, both for the tremendous production values and the way they crammed a huge/complicated plot line into 10 hours of film.

For my contribution to gome of favorite characters, I vote:

Arya Stark -- She reminds me a lot of my daughter.

Tyrion Lannister -- Doesn't remind me of anyone, and not sure I'd like him in real life, but gosh he's fascinating and funny.

Tyrion Lannister is the only Lannister not deseving of being drowned in a sack like kittens.....He's my favorite character from the books, and the only decent Lannister, though Jamie has been acting somewhat better in the last two books

I know, that "kingslayer" moniker sticks with him the entire series. Everyone just assumes any Lannister will revert to type. Jaime actually tries to break that several times during the books. If memory serves, that duel he had with Ned Stark where one of Jaime's men stabbed Ned in the knee from behind; Jaime killed that guy because it fed into his "backstabber" rep.

OK, the idea of Tywin spending four hours a day teaching Jaime to read. Not quite the Snydely Whiplash solution.

I think Jaime is a good character. I'm thinking there's more to him than his reputation and sister-loving ways.

I agree! There is a lot of depth to his character, and in the last books, he really does seem to be trying to turn over a new leaf..... Cersi, however, and the rest of the crwod, are irredemable

If anyone was watching the season finale, you'd notice they are diverging a little further from the books.

Dany's ordeal in the House of The Undying went differently, though I prefer the TV version.

We get to see just what a White Walker looks like, not merely their zombies.

Their zombies look pretty awesome, since they can use weapons.

Alright, watching the series, reading the books afterward. Having not read book 2, I have to ask: WTF is up with Winterfell? That whole situation wasn't done in much detail, hardly any at all.

How the hell did they burn the whole place down? I mean, did they decide to trade Theon for safe passage, and then kill and burn on the way out? Why the hell would the 500 men outside let them do that and live?

Did they find some secret way out and simply gag-n-bag Theon due to his incompetence?

Did Bolton's (Snow's) men let them go/kill them and trash the place themselves? Why?

This is the only part of the whole series that I've been unclear on. Seriously poor exposition. How did 20 men take Winterfell anyway? No garrison whatsoever? Winterfell is huge, what about the rest of the people? Gates wide open? There's a war on, you know.

Ser Roderick (sp) went away with, what, 200 men? What happened to them? They run into the main Greyjoy force and get slaughtered? Roderick gets captured on the way back? A simple mention of "it was a slaughter" would have cleared it all up. As it is, I would need to go back and watch to see where the main Greyjoy force was going, then skip forward to see where Roderick was going. Same place? Answers the question. Since it was mentioned in two different episodes, it was less clear.

20 men scaled the walls in the night and took Winterfell by surprise. It was on a skeleton crew because Roderick took all the fighting men out against the Greyjoys.

The rest of the stuff you asked is not really something you want spoiled for you.
How Roderick went down is pretty different from the books.

well I just blew $50 on the dvds.

I've read all the books, and have now watched 3 episodes. I think I'm going to hate the stuff they have to leave out. I'm ready for them to kill Daeny's brother already. Arya and John were my favorites from the books, looks like that will stay on track with the shows. Way spoiler for those who haven't finished the books HOLY FUCK HOW THE CRAP IS MARTIN GOING TO LEAVE JON STABBED TO DEATH BY HIS OWN MEN!!!!! ARG! That blew me away even more than the Red Wedding, which was gut wrenching, and so was Ned's beheading when I had no idea early on that main fucking characters were going to be dropping like flies. Seems like Jon will likely transfer himself into Ghost or some shit, but I don't know where all that beast possession shit is going. Bran's a fucking tree, Jon's a wolf, wtf?

Holy fuck how did they find such a sneering hate-able kid to play Jeoffry?? Shit, if I saw the kid on the street I'd be likely to punch him on accident. He was such a little bitch in the books, can't wait till he dies. I pictured Vaerys slimier.

Honestly, what I've liked best is the intro credits with the clockwork map!

Tyrion seems cast well, and as the most interesting character in the books imo, this dude has a lot to work with. Can't wait to see more.
