$450 for a used fifty pound Bug Out Bag is not what I'd call a deal. I'm a big fan of redundancy, but even I think eight lighters plus other fire starting gear is a bit excessive for a 72 Hour Bag!

This could perhaps be for someone with a medium amount of discretionary income, but just not much time to pull a bag together. I would say this could potentially fall under the "better than nothing" category.

For $400 you could do a lot better building your own. Most of that stuff is pretty easy to come by and could be put together after a few trips to the grocery, pharmacy and sporting goods store. I don't really see this as a long term outdoor survival pack either. Most INCH bags are the size of a small car. This is a decent starter kit, but the contents seem have selected for value first (which is important, I'm notoriously cheap) over quality. I wouldn't spend the cost of a decent rifle for a bag containing basic, off the shelf items that someone else bought when I could put together a kit myself that suits my needs better and has items that I have experience with. The first aid kit is missing the majority of the basics, while overcompensating with all the Advil and Tums. It's lacking in decent rain gear, sufficient water storage, too much extraneous packaging that just adds weight and bulk, cheap tent and sleeping bag (fine in a pinch, but not for a long term survival kit). Again, a decent starter kit, but not one that I would pay $400 (plus shipping) for.

If someone buys this shit they are doing themselves a huge disservice.

Just because you have money laying around doesnt mean it is ok to waste it on sub-par or extraneous gear that is neither appropriate nor useful in your INDIVIDUAL situation or environment.

You can bet that someone not dedicated enough to research and test their own kit will almost certainly not properly test and adjust/replace/remove or add the gear in that kit once it gets to them.

They will throw that bag in a closet only to forget it is there a month later.

Then when they NEED it they:

A) Won't be able to find it.

B) Won't know shit about how to use half the items, or better yet won't know what to do WITHOUT certain items.

C) Will find themselves left wanting in a serious situation because something broke, expired, or the kit didn't come with it to begin with.

IMO saying "welp, it is better than nothing" is just as bad. Worse even, with the false sense of security and complacency it is prone to induce. This is in essence the very opposite of the "Self-Sufficiency" concept.

The gear is only 10% of the equation. The knowlege and skill is the 90% needed to win the battle.

Grow your own.

Really, not a good deal. Looks like somebody just went shopping and shoved the results in a bag and is reselling it on GunBroker for profit.

For free, I will take a person to some big box store, have them set a fixed budget of $150 or so, and come out with better than what you are offering here. I say this in sereiousness and not to be a jerk to you or anything.

$350 is not a good deal for what you are offering. If this is a business plan, do better.

Well, I actually went through the list of contents and it does easily add up to over what it is being offered for. However, LIKE IT HAS BEEN SAID BEFORE BY OTHERS, the contents are of crappy quality and not well thought out. One would do himself/herself a great favor and research and assemble her/his own BOB/INCH for that money.

Unlike ninja-elbow, I will go ahead and be a jerk and say this: You would not be the first one who would register to this fine forum just to spam its members. And, that is not cool! You are lucky, ninja-elbow did not lock this thread to begin with.

OP, what kind of situation are you in that getting a pre-made kit is an option for you? Just wondering becasue if we know we could help you out some.

Just so you know, we tend to be against pre-made kits to the extent of the bag you linked. Now small, utilitarian kits (like a Red Cross "tube") are pretty useful but that is because they are small and focused.

For the most part we advise people, at the least, make their own kits so that they can familiarize themselves with the contents. This also allows you to cater to your plan and skills (or lack thereof).

As for the bag (the kind with no nozzle), here's my problems, just based on the photos because I'm terribly lazy.

1: Duffle bag pack. Each have a place, but together it's bad at both.

2:Too many fire starting methods. For the weight, it would be better with 2 lighters, 1 magnesium bar and more tinder.

3: Not enough water carriers.

4: 2 bottles of polar pure. Those things are refillable, so the extra bottle is more wasted space. A full sized filter is GREAT because it means you don't have to wait for your water, but you do have to work. Using both is best for both biological and chemical contaminants.

5: Too much candy. Don't get me wrong, fat kid loves candy (insert truffle shuffle here), but it's not the kind of calories you should focus on for a BOB.

6: Unpackaged medications. Looks like Motrin and Pepto, but without the sealed original container, it could be anything from disguised narcotics to rat poison.

7: The apparent first aid kit is not. Not even a bandaid?!

8: Store bought sewing kits will let you down.

9: Survival books should be stored internally. Rectally if you want, but I prefer reading them.

10: Looks like a knockoff Lensatic compass. They're hard to use if you aren't taught, and cheap compasses worry me. I've aced land nav several times because I snuck a Silva along in my web gear. I only used the issue compass on night nav courses where the tritium was a huge benefit over nothing.

Is that enough?

I liked the stainless USGI canteen cup and Bic lighters but this is way overpriced. In some ways this kit is like a first BOB post on these forums before the community goes over it.
