Audio Book Suggestions Please!

Postby TheLastOne » Sun May 27, 2012 1:53 am

Hi,

Driving 12hrs to Milcopp in a couple weeks, and some people have suggested audio books...

Itunes audio book section is total ass for trying to browse (and/or I just suck). The Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter and Colin Powell's new book both look interesting. Thought I'd post to see if anyone had a spectacular suggestion.

Stuff I like:
Just finished all of the Game of Thrones books, they were bad ass
I like action fiction of pretty much any genre
I like nonfiction action, biographies... actually, now that I think about it, I can't think of a type of writing that I haven't found some sort of enjoyment from.

Throw something out there if you've liked a certain book lately (and I'll see if it's available as audio) or if you've found a good audio book yourself.

Thanks!

not an audio book as such, but a radio play with incredibly high production values.

We're Alive, A zombie Podcast.

In the download thread here:

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=91557

I posted links to a couple of sites that have free audio downloads.

Maybe give that a try?

For post-apocalyptic fiction I'd consider:
  • Swan Song
  • The Stand
  • Lucifer's Hammer

If you're interested in following the exploits of a high-speed low-drag operator check out the Gray Man series by Mark Greaney. As part of his research, Greaney has participated in all sorts of fun training.

For something a little less technical and more fun to read (or listen to in your case), check out the author Lee Child who writes about a character named Jack Reacher. All the Jack Reacher audiobooks are read by Dick Hill, an awesome audiobook reader.

For crime-related fiction check out Michael Connelly who writes about an LAPD Detective named Harry Bosch.

For sci-fi, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein (yes, I'm referring to the audiobook in this case)

For non-fiction I recommend:
  • Top Secret America by Dana Priest and William M. Arkin
  • Packing for Mars by Mary Roach
  • $20 Per Gallon by Christopher Steiner
My name is Jeff, not Jonathan. Jonathan would fit...

The Survivors Club by Ben Sherwood
The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - and Why by Amanda Ripley
Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner
Super Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner (some regard this a more self-assured than their first)
The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker
Fear Less by Gavin de Becker
Protecting The Gift by Gavin de Becker
Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell
Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell
I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore

Many of these can be had at the library as CD-audiobooks and/or downloadable e-audiobooks (OverDrive, OneClickDigital, NetLibrary/EBSCOhost), that can be downloaded to portable players. Some of the e-formats can even be burned to CD.

Enjoy your trip.

Newbie Here,

World War Z By Max Brooks was very good though it will only last you about 5 hours some well known names doing the voices too.

Been a while since I read WWZ, great book. I might just do the audio of that.

Dammit Hatch, if I listen to The Road or I am Legend, I'm liable to show up to the shoot bawling or just plain drive off a cliff

HHGuide were great books too.

Prepper: The Gift of Fear is a must read, I haven't checked out Fear Less or Protecting the Gift though... probably should.

Thanks for the suggestions!

No lie. After I finished The Road, I felt as if I needed some Prozac just to get out of bed.
