Wouldn't know. Don't use scopes until about 2000 yards.

Optics comparable to Western counter-parts which are 3x the price.

check these scopes out....

http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactical- ... -P500.aspx

took a course a badlands tatical, one of the guys had this scope on a 700 aac-sd and was shooting out to 1k yards. Everyone was pretty shocked for what he paid for it and how it was performing.

i took a aac-sd with a nikon monarch out there, shot like a champ out to 1k. You will need a good spotting scope and a good spotter but it can be done.

I am NOT trying for 1000 yard shots. And actually, the only reason I'm posting in this thread is because it seems to have brought out a few people that actually know what the hell they are talking about with scopes and distance shooting.

I have an old Marlin 336A .30-30 that I really like. I've shot the hell of out of this thing. It has NEVER had a scope put on it, ever...but I wouldn't mind putting one on it.
Here are my requirements for a scope.

1) LARGE eye relief. I have an issue finding the "sweet spot" in many scopes and I want to find a scope that I can acquire the sight picture rapidly.
2) Something that has an illuminated reticle. NOT NIGHT VISION - just an illuminated set of cross hairs so I can see it easier.
3) Something that doesn't look too out of place on an older, wood furniture 336a.
4) Something that isn't going to fall apart in it's first 5 months of use.

Any thoughts?

In the future, try the all pupose optics thread. For now: Trijicon.

Give this Russian a try: http://kalinkaoptics.com/rifle-scopes/s ... ticle.html The convenient rubber eye pieces takes care of the eye relief rather well, illuminated PSO (Dragunov) reticle (bonus optical range estimator, with elevation and windage compensators)... don't know about looking out of place, but these Russian scopes are typically rugged as hell. The glass is usually very clear and nice.

I used a Burris full field 2 3x9 for a long time out to 1200 with my .308. No problems. But then I got my mark 4 and finally understood. But Burris makes good stuff for a decent price.

I love these threads when I read "no problems shooting...all day long" At the end of the day it's the internet and you must take it for what it's worth. I might believe 10% of what I read online.

Anyway back to the OP's original question. SWFA is going to be offering their SS line with a new reticle. I'm eyeballing the 12x since I wanted more power than the 10X and I felt that the 16x is too much power at times. I've owned 4 various SS optics from 10x to 20x and while they are good optics...I'm not a fan of the traditional MD. I like hash marks much better.
http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-12x42-Tactical- ... 53714.aspx

If you are military/LE, Horus offered an awesome deal last year on the HDMR scope...it came with the Horus H58/59 reticle and let me tell you that reticle is awesome once you get used to it...at first I felt that all Horus reticles were "too busy" but once you use the system it's always for unknown distances.

The SS 5-20 is also another nice optic...both the SS 5-20 and HDMR are well above your $500 budget, but they are worth the extra coin. Vortex has a great warranty and I've had a few of their optics...I just think Vortex dropped the ball on the PST optics.

Hitting at 1,000 yards isn't all that difficult...I've gone to 1,025 with my 308 and my 338LM.

ETA: Go with Mils over MOA if you have the options...Mils is much easier to use compared to MOA...and make sure your knob adjustments match your reticle. IE windage/elevation should be in Mils and so should your reticle...same goes for MOA.

This, Nikon 4.5x14x Buckmaster. Mildots, SFP, Parallax adjustment and a lifetime warranty. Best glass I've found for the price.
