Anyone else have a S&W Shield?

Postby ShipWreck » Wed May 23, 2012 4:35 pm

I went to rent (and possibly buy) a Kahr P9 at a local gunstore/gun range a few weeks back. I wanted something bigger than the Kahr PM9 I had. However, I found that the slightly larger P9 didn't shoot much different than the PM9 I already had. Didn't like it enough to buy the P9...

Now, I really never cared for the factory trigger on M&Ps, but the guy at the range recommended I try renting their new 9mm S&W M&P Shield. I did the 5 for $5 on it. Wow. The trigger on the Shield is not the same as the standard M&P. It is crisper.

That shop was sold out on Shields, but I tracked one down 2 days later. I've since put 850 rounds thru it, and I must say it is my favorite sub compact I've ever shot or owned (I've owned a Glock 26, Walther P99 compact, Kahr Pm9 and rented an XDsc 9mm a few times).

In the past, I always felt like I was compromising a bit - in order to have a subcompact. I never shot them as well as I could a fullsize gun. And, some, like the PM9, are not really a "fun" range gun to drop 200+ rounds thru in 1 trip.

So, I carried some subcompacts in years past - yet, I really didn't practice with them much. The Shield is an exception. Hell, I dropped 450 rounds thru it just on Saturday. Put another 200 rounds thru it this morning...

Only thing that was sore (Sat, after 450 rounds) were my thumbs from reloading the same 2 mags over and over (for 450 rounds).

The gun really shoots like a much larger gun. Accuracy wise, it's a great shooter for such a tiny gun. I can shoot it very well, and its even fun to put them all in the middle of a silhouette target at 15 yards (the very back end of the indoor range).

Now, I am on the list at a couple of local gun stores for another one. I like the gun enough that I want a 2nd one.

I generally prefer metal guns, and full size guns. DA/SA is also my preference. So, I am surprised I like this little gun so much. The trigger is around 6 lbs, though - so, I'm a bit more comfortable with it, even though it's not DA/SA.

Here are a few pics:

Even with the short mag - I can get a full grip on the gun. I always hated that subcompacts had a shortened backstrap:

I love my shield. Im a big guy with big hands so I carry the 8 round mag and still have no issue concealing. Shoots well and the reset is great! Put 200 flawless rounds through it so far. Well worth the money.

My wife paid for hers Tuesday. 13th on the waiting list, estimated 6 months to get it. There's not a single one of the damned things available within an hour radius of here.

How long have they been out? I've been burned before buying new guns when they first hit the market, only to deal with recalls or warranty issues. Nowadays I wait until a gun's been on the market for awhile (like a year or so) so any bugs in the design or production have time to come to light and get worked out.

Same with electronics and some other stuff: I swore off buying the Beta.

That said, the shield looks like a nifty gun, and I've only heard good things about it.

I am super interested in the Shield. Went and fondled some guns yesterday, even held the new XDS .45. I was slightly disappointed because the shield doesn't seem to be much smaller than the sub-compact xd9 or M&P compact. It is thinner, but it actually looked like the height was slightly more than the compact m&P.

The thing is I already have a Keltec P11 and when I got home, at least according to the online spects, it is smaller in almost every dimension and holds 10+1, I am 100% sure the Shield has better reliability and is a better product, but it seems it should be smaller or have greater capacity. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I owned a 32 caliber Keltec before - I just hated that trigger. The trigger on the Shield is much better
