May want to consider adding a couple of cotton balls, they make good fire starting material and be aware that a button compass isn't as reliable as you think they should be. They can actually fail you when you need direction most. Consider investing in a better compass and instead of that bulky magnafying glass, get a fresnel lense.

That's all I have to add otherwise your kit is pretty well thought out.

I'm not seeing any independent source of light beyond the glow stick and that candle. You've got nothing for overland navigation in low light conditions, or for signalling at night. You don't need to start off with $70 tactical light. Even an inexpensive Energizer headlamp would be a vast improvement over what you have right now.

Also, you need a source of real calories in your survival kit. The bullion, tea and gum are for comfort/morale, but you need some fuel for your body to keep going on day of two of what could be very difficult circumstances.

Also, what are you going to boil the water in for your tea and bullion?

Thumbs up for the Scouts Canada whistle.

I'd consider adding a second space blanket, tarp or painter's drop cloth. Along with the poncho, it would give you more on-in-under shelter options to fight Mother Nature. More calories would be great too, and perhaps a SS water bottle or canteen cup to boil water in?

Thats a heavy load...
gearguy, were you meaning a "survival kit", just that extra something that you carry with you in your cargo shorts on a hike, or in your pack, or day pack on a day hike, ride on a mountain trail or whatever, or where you looking to build up and fill a pack with a whole survival system in case SHTF? A get lost in the woods after getting distracted and derailed, or riots break out in the next neighborhood and it's heading your way situation?

I am not sure we are all talking about the same thing... or maybe we are!

I am probably the one who has something completely different in mind from what you were heading with your original post. 8-)

they original idea was to be it relivivley small so it could fit on my chest rig, i just want a survival kit but i wouldnt mind if it turned more into a system as long as it stayed small
