LMAO, when I read that.

Yeah- way to alienate nearly half the forum, there. Read more, post less. Soldiers get to BE soldiers after extensive training, they aren't a bunch of Nervous Nellies blasting away at things that go bump in the night. They also have standing orders that cover this sort of thing- like a loss of standard command structure. Do a little research.

It's an opinion, not a stated fact.. But I get the message.. i'll keep my (rather biassed) opinion on the army to myself from now on; Not my intention to stomp on toes.

Worst places to be when TSHTF

Postby Winston Smith » Sat May 05, 2012 1:02 pm

Ajira wrote:Personally, in a SHTF situation i'm staying well clear of any military place; because the way i see it, it can go two ways:
  • If there is no commanding officer, then it will be full of lots of very nervous combat-trained young men with lots ordinance and no-one to tell them what to do; which is a recipe for disaster.
  • If there is a commanding officer, then it will most likely be pretty uptight and totalitarian-like.

Secondly, I'm also staying clear of places that have a lot of people, like supermarkets, strip-malls, churches, hospitals, etc.. basically any place the ignorant masses will flock towards. The more people are gathered, the higher the chance of getting killed due to someone else's screwup.

Wow, not to be a jerk, but If your foolish enough to believe what you just wrote, I doubt you'd survive SHTF long enough to reach a base, and if you did one of the "very nervous combat-trained young men" would fix your total ignorance of our armed forces.

After this lets get back on topic:

Ajira is not from the United States, and was likely talking about his home country "The Netherlands" military. That being said, I don't think any U.S. Citizen would say anything like that about any branch of our military, and I could care less what he has to say about The Dutch military. People just need to be more clear when they criticize any military, because myself and many others have risked our necks in combat and understandably don't take well to being talked shit about.

Worse place to be when TSHTF? In a plane.

Hmm, I work about 10 miles from home, and the traffic s crap at the best of times. If it was an impending disaster, and everyone was trying to get home, I’d be stuffed.

But occasionally work offshore on oil rigs. That would be a nightmare. There are emergency lifeboats, but they’re built to stay afloat rather than speed you home. Your relying on helicopters and supply ships to get you back.Which means your relying on another crew of people that are prepared to put you ahead of their families or self preservation. Not a good place to be. Yes, we’d be safe from Zombies, but not tidal waves or nuclear attack. And the food/drink would only last so long.

I've always wondered- would you be able to fish off of one of those rigs? And, don't they have a desalination setup on those? Seems an awful lot of weight to ferry out there as potable water, when you're surrounded by water.

KnightoftheRoc, some of the newer ones can. But in the North Sea, most of the Rigs are 20+ years old Jack-Ups, immobile, and require constant support from onshore. The rig floor's over 100ft above sea level, making fishing more or less impossible. And with over 50 people on board, a solitory haddoc isn't going to go far. Saying that, there's a few long haired Rough necks on-board most rigs; maybe one of them's Jesus...

And unfortunately, the survival time in the North Sea, even in the survival suits we have, is a matter of minutes not hours. We'd freeze to death or drown before we could get rescued.

I'd say our best bet, as long as everyone stays calm, is to fill a life boat and head for nearest land. Once the boat's sealed up, it's pretty water tight. The problem is that they're like a bottle; once opened, if the crew don't dissembark properly (i.e, they panick and don't distribute their combined body weight/balas properly) then the boat will capsize very quickly and with only one exit, drown the crew. So in a time critical SHTF situation, with panic, anger and fear riding high, this would be a bloody frightening move.

On a drill ship,or floater, we could at least make our own way on board the vessel. Would be relatively slow, but we'd be in more control.

LOL, just before the power goes out, voltage spikes and turns the security scanner into a microwave. Thats a pretty bad start.

At Star Trek Night with my old friends from back in high school. Most of them are the 'Government can do no wrong' liberal type. I like you company once a week, but you will get me killed WTSHTF.
When I was born, they told me the chance of getting out of this life alive was slim.

Worst places I would think would be

Any major city

airport

hospital

on any mass transit

oddly, out on a camping trip, while safe there you would most likely be completely unaware what is going on and return with no knowledge of what to expect. Also you would have exhausted your consumable supplies most likely by the time you started back.
My favorite quotes from Rorschach from the comic Watchmen

"Once a man has seen society's black underbelly, he can never turn his back on it. Never pretend, like you do, that it doesn't exist."

"None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with *ME*!"

I know it's been said, but work for me would be a horrible place to be. I remember, as everyone does, where I was on 9/11. I was at work and most of us were huddled next to the radio wondering if this might just be our last day on earth. It was a horrible position to be in when I had kids in school and my wife called scared to death asking me to please come home and get our children. I remember just how bad it felt that day wrestling with the idea of responsibility to my job, but at the same time in the back of your mind you are thinking that your job means shit if your family is in danger. For that reason, that's where I don't want to be.

And.. for that reason, I want to commend and thank every soldier out there. I can't imagine what they have to deal with when they are torn between the sacrifice they are giving, the ultimate sacrifice they may face, and the fear of what their family may one day have to deal with had they decided not to do their job.

Ive often read about college campuses being over ran fairly quickly, what about a highschools? I dont know what yours were like but mine was huge, 5000+ students, with rather small entrances that lead into constricted hallways. I would hate to be a teacher or a student in a highschool that is in session when the zombie SHTF.

Our HS wasn't quite that big, but your post reminded me of a funny(?) story from my HS days.

A girl who sat behind me in a few classes was telling me about her child psych class assignment- she brought her little cousin to school with her, about age 6. Walking the halls during classes, the little girl commented on how empty the place seemed, and was dawdling about. In an attempt to speed the little cousin along, the older girl told her that when the bell rings, monsters came out into the halls, so they'd better hurry. she no sooner got the words out, when the bell rang to end class. The little one freaked, screamed bloody blue murder, as 300 students washed out like a tidal wave into the hall.

I'm pretty sure she failed that assignment

Why, just for telling her cousin the truth?

The worst place for me to be, by far, would be in Los Angeles. Oh crap, I'm already there! Haha. I work close enough to home and my kid's school to walk if I had to, so I guess the worst scenario would be if I was out of town. Living in such a highly populated area, my worst fear would be that I couldn't make it home. Trying to flee this area (with nowhere to go really) is not a possibility. The only downside to bugging in to my apartment is the possibility of stupid neighbors and fire. Oh well, at least I have enough food to be cooked with some flavor.

Worst place to be.....?

IN front of the CONNEX box full of zombies which are patient zeros when the timelock on the door goes off, and the Zs are released.

Or at the daycare center when you find out all the little ankle-biters are now a bunch of flesh-eating zombies.

or in a Port-a-John.
It can always get worse.
