Pawn shops and surplus stores in Army towns? Road Trip

Postby knightoftheroad » Thu May 10, 2012 1:35 pm

A cousin and I are possibly planning on taking a road trip later this summer.
Mods: I put this question here since it's more of a what-kind-store question than the travel forum.

Might go out west or down to North Carolina or Virginia Beach.

I was wondering if there are any towns with military bases that are worth swinging by to check out the pawnshops and surplus stores for any gear items that might be useful.

Anyone ever vist any of these garrison towns and have any favorite places-stores to recommend or avoid? The good, the bad, and the ugly?

Thanks.

Killeen has the best pawnshops in Texas...as GIs head out they unload everything that they aren't taking. Have a co-worker who is at least there monthly and has scored incredible deals!
The real question is, do you go into work just for the fun of seeing who's already zombified...

Pawn shops and Army/Navy stores on Coastal Carolina tend to be extremely pricey in comparison to shopping for the same gear online. Craigslist in the areas you're gonna be in is likely a better bet.

If you're in the Fayetteville, NC, area, you might swing by Ft. Bragg, to check out the museums, if anything.

Most of the decent pawn and surplus shops are off Yadkin Road.

General Jackson's, across from the US Cav store, is a big draw, in part because they'll modify your gear.

I took a poncho liner there and had them sew in a zipper, turning my wobble into a light sleeping bag.

They also replace snaps on Alice rucks with quick-release clips, cut and laminate maps so they fold up in cargo pockets, and other mods.

It's a pretty cool joint, at least it was when I was in Division. But like Doc Torr mentioned, most of the off-post places are pricey.

Ft. Bragg has a quarter of the Army posted there, and as such has a ton of gear stores. Some are outstanding, like Gray Group Training and AWS (Advanced Warfighting Solutions), and have a few that are total clown shoes. They have a bazillion pawn shops, two bazillion surplus stores, and three bazillion strip clubs. They also have The Airborne and Special Operations Museum, as well as the Division and SF museums on Ft. Bragg. They also have PTS, which is Pablo's Taco Shop, a legit Mexican taco shop.

All their crap is overpriced - dude had an ACOG that was obviously hot beat to hell and they were asking $700 (I think CID came and took it). You want real deals on gear check out the Bell County Fleamarket on the weekends. I picked up around 20 USGI new in the plastic 20 round mags a few years back for $3 a pop, PASGT helmet for $25, A brand new woodland goretex bivy cover with a large ruck and frame for something like $30. The best deal on ammo cans is at that place on Rancier that has the flags out front - $5 .50 and 7.62 cans all day long. The dude used to have a full pallet but I haven't been there in a couple of months so YMMV. There's also a place down on 10th street that used to have some pretty good deals as well.

Ever since that Action Pawn burnt down they've been overpriced.

I always thought It would funny to haggle with pawn stores because its insulting what they pay to buy goods. Action Pawn just has a big selection. I'm for sure gonna go hit up those Ammo cans though. Thanks for the heads up!

Bragg/Fayettenam has a lot of surplus/gear shops. Some are good on price, others not so much. You've got both used and new shops, and some that carry both. Airborne 1, and Old Sarges are the two biggest surplus shops, and Grey Group Training, and General Jackson's are the big shops for new stuff.

I'm familiar with Old Sarge's (been trading with him for years!) but not familiar with Airborne 1- where's it at?

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

Has anyone any other favorites they would like to add?

Arkane mentioned the flea market as a source. Any folks ever check out the flea market in a base town...good, bad? worth the time to swing by?

Pawn shops have some deals,.. but I find better deals in the local classified papers and Craig's list. Local classified papers usually let folks post firearms.
