I am looking for a good suit that can protect against radiation as well, that is my main concern. I live close to a power plant and am afraid something can happen here in CA like what happened in japan. I think that taking a course or training would benefit me. I am trying to learn all that I can about the subject. I also plan on getting a decontaminating station as well
There is no suit that is man portable that protects against high levels of radiation. There are good threads on radiation risks here:viewtopic.php?f=6&t=81472viewtopic.php?f=6&t=81511
The basic rule for radiation is that 3 things can mitigate radiation danger: Time, distance and shielding.
Time and distance go hand in hand. The more time you run, the farther away you move from radiation and the less time you spend close to it the less exposure.
Shielding may require 6 feet of concrete to reduce the radiation to a level where it is safe.
The typical dental lead apron would not provide much protection and if you made from that material it would weight 30+ lbs.
If you lived near a reactor; your plan in case of an emergency should be to leave ASAP. Distance is your friend.
