surveilliance kits

Postby DJH » Sun Apr 22, 2012 12:01 pm

WOot. Got my Surveillance Kits in for my short-range walkies today.

Love these, they have a PTT button mounted to them, good clear sound, and the earbuds & tube are replaceable. Also, using these makes the walkies silent (even the stupid brrp beep from the PTT comes thru the earbud instead of saying "HEY I'M HERE!" to everyone within hearing distance.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JYTWT0/ref ... ce_3p_dp_1 - these are for Motorola but the kits are made for many different applications including higher end walkies (ones with nice replaceable antennae, etc.)

Disclaimer - yes, my walkies are not top of the line. Don't need them to be, don't care. They do what I want them to. flame on. lol

Where will the mic be?

I've used ear buds and throat mics but not one of the surveillance type set ups. Looks interesting. I've got a few radios like that, I may look into these.

I'm with you on the not the top of them line. I just need something for group comms in a fairly close range.

The mic is in the clip with the PTT button if I recall correctly. It's also considered a palm mic, but clipped in the right position it works fine.
edit: in the photo I posted it's the large rectangular blocky bit to the upper left.

I have a real Motorola Secret Service in-ear rig (same ones USSS uses). It has a split in the cable (near the connector), with one line to go down your sleeve and clip to your wrist-cuff or inside the lapel of your jacket. There is a little box at the end of the line with a PTT switch, mic and small clip. Then you talk into your hand or lapel while you PTT (or you can lock it to VOX).
The other line goes up the back to the in-ear coil. Pretty slick when you're wearing a suit.
It only fits Motorola business type radio though, not my HT. :gonk:

Yeah this rig works pretty much the same. Not sure if there is any real difference, maybe in quality, but then these rigs are pretty high quality from my experiences with them. Every production I've worked on with a decent budget uses comm gear with these kits on set, and they're usually using pretty high quality short range walkies (IE non-blister pack stuff)

My main love for these things is that the sound quality thru them is super clear.

There may be a kit to fit your HT, have you looked? What model # is it?

I think the obvious difference in design (other than Motorola quality) is the cable splits near the connector, so only one cable goes down the sleeve the other goes straight up to the ear. On yours it looks like the ear piece also comes back from the PTT box, which would limit length and placement or movement, but not on mine.
I made an adapter for the plug, but the impedance is way off so it doesn't work. It was like $275 new (company paid), so I still have it and only use it at work. Someday I'll get one for my HT. They are a hassle to put on or if you have to fiddle with the radio, but great for basic com in a suit. Most of the time a hand mic with ear bud plug works best, easiest to fiddle with and take on/off.

BTW, I also got mine for working on a show. Corporate event. I work in audio, so I'm the guy handing out the radio's at events. I decide who gets the ear pieces or just a plain HT.
