Need help shopping for air gun

Postby Enter_Narne » Wed Feb 22, 2012 10:13 pm

Hey are there any air gun people out there that can help me with this question.

I'm looking for a semi-auto pellet or bb rifle that isn't a springer or a CO2 rifle. Something that can take out squirrels and pests and maybe penetrate a zed's head all for less than $150. Does something like this exist? Maybe you can point me in the right direction with an online air gun resource or something? Thanks

This place has a decent selection and i do remember the PCP and big bore air rifles there. Worth a look.

If you want semi auto that isn't CO2, I'm afraid you looking at a PCP (pre-charged pneumatic). Unfortunately, your $150 price point isn't realistic unless you find a helluva deal on a used weapon. These are the least expensive options I could find:

Hamerli Elite 10 Shot repeater: $360 (.177 caliber, 1070 fps)

Indeed.
And remember to ad a filling station to the price. Or at the very least a pump. The cheapest pumps I have seen will run you about $200. And for that kind of money, you are looking at the "barely acceptable for short term use" end of the quality scale.

I've been looking at the "Remington NPSS Nitro Piston Short Stroke" in .22 @ 1000fps, but even that's over your $200 limit. It also comes with a 3x9 scope that's sufficient from the reviews I've read. Also it's not semi-auto. It's a break barrel with single loading.

As far as penetrating a human skull, doubt you will. For hunting a simple pump crossman pistol is gold. I've killed a raccoon just fine with a .177 from 25 feet. But I have horror stories of the unkillable rabid coon too. (1 head shot from 25 feet, eye shot from 10 feet, follow up eye shot from 10 feet, 5 foot shot to the spine which paralyzed it and a mercy kill with a large knife to the heart while stepping on its neck- took about 10 mins in all and was heart wrenching to do) Nothing deserves to suffer.

That has got to be one of the most immature and irresponsible things I have heard in a long time.
If you don't have the proper tools to hunt, than you need to stay at home with your x-box. Randomly shooting at fairly large animals, with a extraordinarily underpowered weapon multiple times, and then letting it suffer for 10 minutes, is behaviour I would expect to see from a 13 year old sociopath.

I can't imagine it is even legal.
Especially considering where you live.

Hunt with a real weapon next time? Some hunting laws are in place to prevent this kind of suffering. Here's hoping you at least ate it afterward (unless it really was rabid, in which case a .177 was kind of dumb to begin with. That's when you call animal control.)

Thanks for all the advice. I'm gravitating more towards multipump pneumatics with less interest in zed headshots. I was even considering a slingshot based on something from JoergS lineup.

I have often thought the Benjamin 392 would be the ideal small game air rifle for the PAW. Multi-pump like the less expensive Crossmans or Daisys, but built like a real fire arm. At .22, those pellets will hit hard.

Now I'm just trying to find an air gun that is fast at reloading. Like maybe they have a magazine or something.

What are you wanting to (mostly) do with it ?
Small game hunting (stalk or ambush ?)
Pigeon shooting
Vermin control
Backyard plinking

Different needs therefore different guns
I'm English, our Government doesn't trust us to have real guns........or decent pocket knives for that matter
Good job theres no such thing as a Trebuchet licence :D

Coming slightly to the defense of Bunni here....

He did say it was rabid and if confronted with a clearly rabid animal, while my inclination may not have been to use a knife on it, I would be inclined to make it dead as quickly as possible with anything remotely capable of doing the job(without putting myself at risk of getting infected).

You may as well get both. Cover all your bases. Any reason you have ruled out springers? There are a LOT of great spring guns out there these days that will do anything a multi-pump will do and more.

Look into the models offered by Singapore Air Guns (SAG). Yes, they are inexpensive Chinese guns, but they are by far the best Chinese guns available. They really are pretty darn good - so good in fact, that there are actually replacement parts and custom upgrade parts available for them aftermarket. FEW airguns can say that, regardless of price.

The TF 58 is a side lever, with just enough oomph to be useful on small game
http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Tech_Force_TF58_Contender_sidelever_air_rifle/2321

The TF 87 is an under lever that would be pretty useful as a general purpose shooter
http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Tech_Force_TF87_Contender_Series/2329

Believe me, I had some crap Chinese aiguns when I was a kid as well, and I was pretty skeptical of these. But after buying a TF78 C02 rifle, I can say they are honestly every bit as good as the equivalent Crossman / Benjamin rifles. It makes me sad to say that, but its true.

First time post here...

The Daisy/Avanti 953 single pump .177 air rife is a repeater. It can use a 5 round clip or be single shot. It's low in price, steel barrel, rifled, auto-advances the clip as you cock the bolt, and comes to full power (500fps) in a single pump and is pnuematic. I selected this for the same reasons as the OP. Wanted an air rifle that needed nothing else except pellets. This seems

http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Daisy_Pow ... getPro/585

I enjoy mine very much. Not really a hunting rifle but will do for Squirrels and Rabbits, then stick em on your Squirrel cooker!

If you "mercy killed" a rabid animal with a knife you lack a few neurons.
