Automatic opening knife advice

Postby NJ Spartan » Wed Mar 28, 2012 9:10 pm

Like it says above, I'm looking for some advice on purchasing an automatic opening knife. I want something that'll be comfortable clipped to my poverty cuz I carry a knife EVERYDAY. I'd prefer a tanto point, with partial serrations. Id like something that holds an edge but is relatively easy to re sharpen. I'm not looking to spend hundreds if dollars either. What do you guys recommend? I hate buying shit that isn't quality. I'm hard on my gear abcs I expect it to perform. Thanks in advance!

Go to Wal-Mart. Buy a Kershaw Blur Tanto. 50-60 buck range. Cut things with it.

This is my everyday carry. Smith and Wesson M&P, Have had it over a year and a half, great automatic open knife, works well for multiple purposes. Only issue I've had was just recently the belt clip came off but doesn't effect it in the least.

For an actual automatic, it depends entirely on where you are. Make sure they are legal in the area you live in, 'cause autos typically aren't unless you're police or military. For a good quality tanto blade, though, you'd better be ready to pay over $100, 'cause there are few good ones under that price.

More info would help, and frankly, assisted openers like the Blur are often more reliable, less expensive, and much more legal to carry.

I'd just assumed OP meant assisted opening.

I couldn't agree more, I too want to throw in for the Kershaw Blur.

I already own the tanto version and I am about to pick up another one (for the wife) thru Ebay for about 40 bucks delivered. If you go the Ebay route be watchful of some of them being factory seconds, the good thing is that they will be priced accordingly.

My wife carried the benchmade auto-stryker 9100 to bosnia, korea, and iraq twice over 8 years and its still clipped to her pocket today, 12 years after she got it. Its been run over by humvees, a bradley, and patrol cars.

I take it apart once a year to clean and oil it.

I honestly couldnt recommend any other knife to the degree I can recommend that one.

Any of the Benchmade auto openers are going to be the next best thing to bomb proof, but they can be a bit expensive with more than one around $400 last time I looked.
There is also the GERBER DMF (make sure you get the auto opener as there is a manual open one) for right around $200.
Although you will need to make sure it is legal for you to own said auto opening knife in your area before you purchase.

Microtech scarab is my EDC. I've beat the hell out of this thing and it's been nothing but perfect. MT owns the OTF market in my opinion, for a great side opener try Pro-Tech.

Well a good starter one is the Kershaw breakout. you can get them for around 70 bucks or so. But it also depends on if you want an otf, side opener, classic style modern or tactical.

I have a friend who owns a Benchmade Infidel (?) OTF knife. It's pretty slick, and if the lock ever fails it will just let the blade slide back in instead of closing on your hand. But I actually like the lockup on some of my assisted openers better. What's the advantage of a button activated/automatic vs. assisted opening knife?

I would say jump on the Benchmade bandwagon, they have multiple options on blade styles, locking mechanisms and sizes to tempt your desires. Most models I own, two of which are rotated as my edc and would be happy to review any styles that might grab your interest. I put em through hell!
I'm in the market for some CHEAP blue wire! Also a can of black spray paint!

I'm a LEO too. I actually don't carry my auto knifes as much after picking up a couple of Emerson Kives with the wave feature. The "wave" is a like a little hook on the back of the blade that catches on your pocket as you pull your kife out. This causes your kife to open as you draw it. It's quick.

I active Army and a knife user/collector...I probably have a dozen or so automatics. My last deployment I was gifted the newer Benchmade AFO with the tanto blade. It's a quality knife, but auto's sit at home and I'm packing an Emerson (again) here in Afghanistan. This is easily the fastest method of deploying a folder from the pocket; much fast than any auto I own.
