Kifaru Regulator Slick Bag

Postby proteus » Wed Mar 07, 2012 8:55 pm

Hey ZS...I am looking into getting a new sleeping bag and wanted to know if anyone has or had or used the newer Kifaru Regulator slickbag sleeping bag? I think its a nifty looking system but wanted to know if it is actually as good as it seems? I was thinking of getting the -20 bag. Thanks in advance.

The link to the sleeping bag i wanna get:

I have a few, yes they cost money, yes they have a wait time, but I feel my purchase is great. I have a 0* MOB and 20 slick and 0* slick in reg long. I also own a 20* slick in wide long that can act as a MOB without the MOB features. I have used them the last year with great success, I find the temp ratings are pretty well on, even with the modular MOB bag. I really like how they compress more than most synthetic bags, and have a great (low) weight to them. I typically tent camp between sept to may. in my neck of the woods, temps are between 30 and neg 20. So between what I have, I am set. In the warmer months I hang in a hammock, but even a 20* bag can unzip for warmer weather if needed.

Here is a post I did on kifaru forums when I picked up my first 2 bags. Then a photo of some usage on the elk hunt. They really are great bags, but like everything, someone will always recommend something else. Its just a fact of life, but in my opinion, they are great.

Thanks! Those are some awesome pics! I have been looking around and the Kifaru sleep system seems the best option I have found so far. Ill keep looking for a bit since I do have my military sleep system currently but I definitely want to upgrade soon!

Survival blanket, Ridgerest, Downmat and bag all by a Kifaru stove. Looks comfortable. :)

Yea thats an amazing setup...Its very similar to the setup I am trying to build right now. But unless i find something better then the kifaru regulator slick bag i think it will be my next sleeping bag system. Any other input on other sleep systems are always welcome! thanks.

I have had a +20* slick regulator (long) for the past few years and I really like it. It's a simple design, well-executed, and sleeps comfortable and warm for me.

I have the 20* slickbag and I like it. It packs down really small, is very light, and the temp rating is pretty close for me.

I really like the fact that it packs down so well and is a lot more condusive to rucking in and out...My current one is the military 4 piece system but all that does in compress into a giant ball and its a pain in the ass to ruck in...not to mention is probably the heaviest piece of my kit...Thanks for all the input and the comments!

I just received mine here in Afghanistan; it's the 20 degree Slick bag. With their small compression bag, it does compress down much smaller than any other bag I have with that degree rating. It's almost too warm for me under the current conditions, I'm just racking out in a metal box and had to work at getting the temp low enough so I wasn't over-heating  I sleep hot anyways, so this will work for actual temps in the outdoors for me and the compression makes it perfect for smaller packs. My only complaint is that I wish the zipper went to the bottom. I did get the regular size and after considering that I don't care much for tapered foot boxes; the foot box is more "square" and quite roomy, I just prefer less tapered bags. It's fine, but I would probably have went with the the "wide" version for more comfort where temps may fluctuate. As is, I will hold my Woobie inside and really help improve the efficiency, most likely drop the temp rating another 5 to 10 degrees.

It has excellent loft. Although I haven't been on the ground outside yet, it doesn't seem to have typcial cold spots found in most bags. Overall, it's a great investment. The material is the same as the Woobie and I can attest to how tough the material is.

That looks like a pretty cool bag. I was going to pick up one of these at a pretty good price. If that falls through then I'll take a serious look at the kifaru bag. I do really Iike the color as opposed to bright red, although it matters less with a bivy.

Any thoughts or suggestions on above bag vs kifaru?

OP, I'm not sure if you're deployed or in garrison but around these parts (Fort Stewart), our rucks hit the scales before every march to ensure you have X amount of pounds in there, so lighter gear won't help me. That notwithstanding, I would love a kifaru bag for personal use but will probably have to settle for a Woobie, 500$ is really just too much for me at this point.

Edit: Due to your avatar I thought you were military. Disregard 1st half of my post.
