I always assumed it was electrically fired due to the 2000 cyclic rate for 3 round burst... that's pretty dam fast for non electric

I'm sure it'll get worse this April/May. My WWII teacher and school administration "okayed" a demonstration/presentation from me. We're going to take some of my WWII items and look-alikes and other things relating to it (it won't be museum accuracy, but it's to give a general idea on some of the stuff) and set 'em up at the community center. It'll feature an M48 (as close to a Kar98k as I can get since that one guy we know sold 90% of his collection of K98s for around $30,000 a few years ago), a P38, modern 1911, original M1 Carbine, Hitler Youth Dagger, replica grenades, flags, helmets, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera...

I'm totally dedicating 25% of my preparation time to, "If they ask a CoD-related question about this item, I will answer with ______" since there's two or three individuals in the class that base the vast majority of their historic and firearms knowledge off of that game series. Lawdy, lawdy...

EDIT TO ADD THE STUPIDS: Not firearms related, but someone said this to me today. A female friend of mine used to date a male friend of mine; they broke up. Whatever: I don't care. I'm staying neutral. Anyway, I was talking to the girl today and she started talking about my girlfriend and my relationship.
"Yeah, your girlfriend's really nice, Polley."
"Uh, thanks."
"I also like how you guys keep your relationship private and don't make a big deal out of it."
"Yeah, I figure it's one way to both respect her and myself."
"It totally is! She's super pretty, too!"
"I know." (I meant it in a joking way; I'm not as much of a dick as I sometimes seem.)
"I mean, some days it's like she's almost prettier than I am."

I just sat there in silence because I didn't know if I should say, "You stupid bitch." or what. I mean, why would you say that in a conversation to anyone?

Was in big five the other day perusing the gun section when this fatty lard ass pimple faced mid teen stinktard walks in with his father who also appeared to be about the same caliber specimen... Anyway they walk Past the .22 AR's and fat tardchild says " why would anyone wver want to own one of those, I mean like a hunting rifle or something would be fine BUT NOT A FULLY AUTOMATIC MACHINE GUN" at this point I point out to the pimply teenager that the rifle he is looking at is in fact a .22 clone and he says " Yea right dude are you retarded I know an M4 when I see one!"

It was at this point I had to walk away..... Wanted to ask to see the rifle but ol' papa bear was starting to look irritated with the fact that his prize piggy (pimplefattytard) was wrong and someone called him on it....

Yes it is his right to be an idiot but jeez....

Yeah, people tend to poop themselves when I mention I hunt with an AK. "You hunt with a machine gun?!"
"No, I hunt with a semi-automatic sporting rifle that fires a .30-caliber projectile and I use the expanding ammunition mandated by state laws."
"Oh, uhh.... terrorist."

That stuff is perpetuated by Hollywood and the media as well. I can't say how many times I've seen AR15s referred to as MACHINE GUNS on both movies and the news.

I remember several years back I was watching an episode of cops or some such where they raided a drug house. One of the cops picked up a rifle and was going on and on about how it was an AK and how they were absolutely illegal to own and how popular they are with gang types etc. Only problem was, even my then untrained eye immediately identified it clearly as an sks.

ETA: I'm sure in this case it was illegal for them to have any gun as at least one of them was probably on probation, but woe to the average citizen with an sks should he meet up with this particular officer.

I had forgotten about this gem until an old friend of mine (who recently paid me a visit) came by the other day and it jogged my memory about some of the absolute shit that used to come out of his mouth.
This story is well over a decade old, but it was so dumb I couldn't believe I'd forgotten about it.

Background: He had been in the military for a few years (no, I don't want to say which one, because I thought his behavior was absolutely embarrassing and I don't want this story to lend itself to the image that members of that branch are incompetent pogues) and after his military service was finished he came back around and was hanging out at my new place (again, this all happened over a decade ago); I *had* assumed that since he'd been in the military he'd be somewhat knowledgeable about firearms (or at the very least, the firearms of OUR military). I was so very wrong about that, so maybe this is also a story about how dumb I used to be.

The encounter went like this:
I brought up the topic of firearms.
He seemed interested* (*- In retrospect, I think he was more interested in being a know-it-all about them than actually discussing them)
I asked if he'd like to see some of my small firearm collection (and back then it was pretty small).
He expressed interest.

I brought out my Glock21 (which I eventually sold)
He said "Nice, a Glock 9!"
I said "Uh, no, that's a G21, and it's actually a .45"
I thought to myself "Meh, simple mistake."
He said "Oh."

I brought out my HK-91 clone (technically an FA-91, also eventually sold)
He said "You have an M16!?"
I said "...That's not an M16, though I do own an AR-15"
He said "Oh."

I brought out my Browning Auto-5 (technically a Charles Daly BA-5 clone, and yes I eventually sold it too)
He said "cool pump action!", and I heard the tchkt-tchkt sound come out of his mouth.
I said "Nope, semi-auto."
He said "Oh."

I brought out my AR-15 (20" HBAR with the circular OEM handguards), thinking I was going to finally make it easy for him.
He said (with some trepidation) "So, uh, what's that one...?" (I'm think he was getting tired of just guessing and being wrong)
I said "This is the AR-15 I was telling you about earlier."
He said (hedgingly) "So...?"
I said "*sigh* yes, you know, the one that I said was similar to the M-16?"
He said "Aha! Yes, yes of course!"

I wrapped the tour up at that point, deciding that I was suddenly uncomfortable letting him fondle the finish of my parkerized metallic babies.

To this day I'm still not sure who the bigger fool was:
him (for not even recognizing the civilian version of our nations service rifle),
or me (for thinking that every desk-jockey and non-combat member of our military automatically gained some kind of Wikipedia like database of firearm info just because they happened to serve in the military).

(After proofreading this post I thought I should mention): Wikipedia did not exist back then if that helps give an idea of just how long ago this was.
56k was the god of the internet, people still knew what AOL was, there were a pair of very handsome twin buildings in NYC called the World Trade Center, and 911 was only known as the number you dialed from a phone in an emergency.

Needless to say, I think he was a little embarrassed by the end of the short tour of my closet, and I was certainly embarrassed for him.
Come to think about it, that also happens to be the last time I've ever let a friend of mine see the inside of my closet (or gun-safe) without some vetting or initiation on the gun range.

I don't know exactly why, but I simply assumed he knew, and I kind of felt like an ass for making that assumption.

That reminds me of when I tried talking gun to some recruiters that came to my school. The conversation went about the same way, but at least they knew which model of M16 they used and what their sidearm was.

There was a girl at one of our shoots who hadn't shot an "assault" rifle before, so I helped her out. We had all of our stuff laid out on a table. I held up my father's Daewoo AR-100 and said, "Want to give this one a go?"
"No way! That looks freakin' scary -- like one of those guns you see terrorists on the news using!"
"It's South Korean... they're our allies..."
"It's too mean looking for me."

So I decided, "Okay, not going to force it." So I asked her which one she did want to try out first and she chose our AK-74.

What's the color code for irony, again?

If I remember, I'll check. We got a LMT M203 and a Spikes 37mm launcher at work.

of course even if you bore them out, you still have to get your hands on the real deal ammo...

Pretty much, which is why I like this idea- completely removing the barrel on HIS launcher sounds like the safest way to allow him to handle it.

Mentioned buying an AK pattern rifle to a friend today, and he said something snarky and weird like "nothing like being able to turn a deer into little pieces from afar, is there?" Which, I totally didn't get.
To break it down, he thought:
-any AK rifle would be full auto - the distinction between full and semi was lost on him
-any rifle based on an "assault rifle" or "war rifle" must be "too powerful" for hunting and somehow unsporting to use
-and that this would make such a rifle inhumane to use for hunting.

To be fair, this guy isn't stupidat all, he just isn't into guns. His lack of knowledge about rifles (and his assumption that I was a hunter, which he must have got from the description I gave of the rifle - a Saiga - which I described as being modified to look more like a traditional hunting or sporter rifle.) wouldn't have troubled me in the least if it hadn't been accompanied by such a strong negative judgement of me, so I found myself trying to educate him a bit in order to defend myself. Because he wasn't interested in the subject, he didn't really track when I tried to explain the difference between full and semiauto, the relative ballistics of 30-30 and 7.62x39 ammunition, pistol grips etc. I stopped talking when I realized that I might as well have been saying "I am an unstable gun nut" over and over again, because that's all he heard.

This came up because we were at a pawn shop looking at camera equipment, and I strolled over to look at some of the long guns behind the counter. The friend asked if I were looking for any type of gun in particular. When I said "Saiga" and he asked "What's that?" and I replied "It's an AK47 type of rifle etc. etc" and at the words "AK47" his eyes just clouded over with disappointment at my evil choice of gun.
