Truck was broke into tonight.

Postby Ziggs » Fri Mar 09, 2012 4:08 am

So I have recently relocated back to Texas so I'm in my brothers house with my rents while he is away in afghanistan. I had fallen asleep earlier tonight and woke up around 12 or so. Not long after I was awake my father walks in my room and asks if I went outside into the truck I told him no. So he says somebody was inside my brothers truck which my father uses and sure enough somebody had gone through it and stolen my father social. so I grabbed my jacket and shoes and surefire flashlight and headed out down the street in the direction I believe he was going. I found the man in an alley across the street from my house as soon as my flashlight lit him up he jumped into somebodies back yard. I then moved across the street (as this was at the entrance of they alley) incase he had a firearm and at the time I was unarmed except my surefire and phone which leaves me without any form of protection. So I call the police and I stay in the area looking for him I walked back down the street to signal the coming officer and showed him where I found him and which backyard he went into. Unfortunately the k9 tracked him to the local elementary school which has fences galor around it. They lost the guys trail most likely due to the heavy rain that had perfect timing 10 minutes after I spotted the guy but continued searching I do not know if they have found him yet and most likely not. I have mixed emotion's about this happening kinda ticked that my father didnt lock the doors on the truck which he uses. This is the first time something like this has happened I wish I hadnt have sold my concealed carry to pay bills when things were rough maybe he would be behind bars. I think I made the smart move of backing off seeing as I am not a cop though I was working the the LE field in the past and I did not have any weapons on me. Crime can happen at any moment and I am going to prepare even more because of this. Sorry if this is really unclear as I have had lots of adrenaline and feelings of sleepyness come over me haha :) .

Paragraphs are nice - not required, but nice..

Just a thought. Maybe is was good that you DIDN"T have your CCW. I know Texas is famous for liberal gun and shooting laws, but having put a round in someone for 'breaking' into an unlocked vehicle would put in you in a bad light, and maybe even jail.

Good reason to leave nothing worth taking in a vehicle. Just the same, some goombah will break a window to look anyway....

I never lock my doors. I'd prefer criminals not knock out my window to take what they want. Generally thou I dont leave anything in my truck that too many people would want.

I'm a 9-1-1 telecommunicator. I've been on the phone with people that thought it was a good ideal to chase a criminal and it go really bad for them. I dont recommend doing that armed or especialy unarmed. Unarmed you risk injury or death, armed you risk injury, death, or hurting someone else. Now granted hurting someone else may or may not be a bad thing, but prison sucks if the DA or jury doesnt go your way. Just please be mindful of what can happen. We dont want to see any good citizens getting hurt or in trouble because of a piece of crap criminal.

They took your fathers social? What do you mean by that, took his social security card?

Yes he stole my father's social security card. Well the thing is he didn't know I was anywhere near him until I caught him in the alley and he was pretty blinded by my surefire.

My question for you is.... what would you have done if this guy DID have a gun and started shooting at you?

"Sir, they've got guns!"

"What do YOU have? A water pistol?"

"Um, no... I have... My keys... A cell phone... And a REALLY bright flashlight!

***FACEPALM***

Not that I haven't been in that position before, but generally not where I live...

OK, one time I ran to get Chinese, and on return I saw 2 guys run between 2 houses down the block. I stopped and lit the area up with my maglite and saw one had dropped in the grass to wait for me to leave. I called the cops and waited there with my light on the guy. The contact officer had him stand up, then the officer picked up an M4 from where he was laying.

This was before WI got CCW, and my pistol was cased & unloaded in the back, where I couldn't reach it. It turns out there were a bunch of kids playing airsoft on our block. SOOO glad I didn't see them running through my back yard with guns...

As soon as I found the guy in the alley I retreated across the street at an angle that he couldnt see and already had 911 dialed. I kept a good distance away from his last known position (half a block before I stopped moving). I was at the corner of a wooden fence when I peaked around the corner into the alley with my surefire if he opened up I wouldnt have been a very big target and I had cover over half of my body. Also the man had his back to me and looked over his shoulder then got the deer in headlights look and started jumped over the fence. None of his actions read pulling out a weapon but as soon as he jumped up I backed off. *edit* The criminal did not know of my presence until I had actually shined my light onto him.

Not to rub salt in the wound, but why would your dad leave his SS card in an unlocked vehicle? That belongs in your safe inside.

At least he didn't leave a firearm in it, like in so many of these stories.

So someone else got what i was getting to already, why would you leave important identity in a vehicle?

Thats not a simple mistake, your social security card shouldn't be in a vehicle except on rare occasions. I know, my parents generation taught us to keep in in our wallets and I didn't know any better until I had kids, that seems to be a common mistake.

While I believe this is true I keep all of "my" important documents locked up. But he is a man be it an old one he makes his decisions but I've talked to him about it to get him caught up on what he should be doing and not doing.

Problem is there is potential to affect you as well. When someone steals his identity and gets him up in debt those debt collectors will attempt to get to him through you. You'll at very least want to look up what kind of personal identifying information (PII) they can give out over the phone, thats how I was able to get the last one off of me that was looking for my brother. My worthless bum brother hasn't spoken to me in 10 or more years and has defaulted on school loans and they call me looking to get in touch with him. So the last one to call was a couple years ago and I had moved and changed my number a year prior so I don't know how they got my info. But I phished a little and started a conversation with him, acting like I didn't know what was up when he asked for my brother by name, i.e. didn't come right out and say I wasn't him. So the guy gave me all kinds of info then I stropped him and asked if he realized he just gave three pieces of my brothers PII to me. Just throwing out the acronym stopped him. So I told him I work in ITRisk and know all about PCI compliance and that I knew auditors who I could pass on the PII leak to that could easily come after his company. That one never did call back.
But the point is you by being a relative some companies may try to track him down through you. The indirect consequences.

Now let me add that I may be just over paranoid, since I work in that field, part of my daily job is to look for risks like this.

I moved from TX to KY a few months ago. My truck was broken into in Houston in 2010. http://zombiehunters.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=60740
I have my CHL police told me even if had caught them in the vehicle I couldn't shot them. Even thou it would have been well deserved for them.
