$15 scope in a $200 mount. ya I'm kinda derp

Postby cemoulton » Mon Mar 12, 2012 2:41 am

I had no plans to put an optic on this particular AR but i picked up an old Sears 2.5 power scope for $15 and love it. (Go ahead im laughing at me too)

The scope has a pretty long eye relief (about 6 inches) I shoot nose to charging handle and mounted it in front of a DD fixed rear iron on a riser I had laying around this put the cross hairs dead center in the peep. I didn't plan on keeping it like this I was just messing around but after shooting it I fell in lust soooo I ordered a Bobro extended mount and a troy flip up.

I believe the old 1inch Sears scopes were made by Redfield or Weaver but i have no idea how sturdy they are most came on 30 06 rifles (or so ive been told). The glass nice and light gathering is pretty good for a small scope. If it doesn't hold up I'll probably replace it with a Nikon monarch but hopefully I won't have to.

Ok let the bashing begin.

if it works for you, do it. I fully intend to be using some cheap knock off site. As long as it stays zero'ed I'll be just as happy as I can be. If not then I'll get a good one...

EDIT: Some will say get the good one the first time around, but I dont shoot enough to justify high dollar sites.

I don't really think of this as cheaping out. Both Bobro and Troy make first class stuff as for the old scope it's a steal tube 2.5 fixed power. I did some research and it appears to be a Weaver 2.5k made in el Paso Texas and rebranded for Sears. I hope it holds up well but if it doesn't then I'll replace it with a Nikon or Burris 1-4 if I go Burris then i'll have to get the 30mm rings from Bobro. But that's no big deal also I'm not all that excited about illuminated scopes so the Burris is less likely.

I just thought it was humorous that my mounts cost almost 14 times what the optic cost lol

A $15 scope in a $200 mount is still a working telescopic sight setup for $215. Which is pretty damn good, assuming the Sears scope is actually worth shit.

People called me stupid for buying a €500 car and putting €1000 worth of parts and repairs in it. Guess what, that was a working car that lasted me 6 years for €1500 right there.
Off the internet until further notice.

I gotta ask why the mount cost that much? What AR mount is it?

Bobro extended eye relief QD mount.

Bobro and Larue are pretty much the go to QD mounts on the market and they both run around $200. American Defense mounts are reportedly also gtg and are only slightly less expensive. These mounts are designed to return to zero after removed from rail and reinstalled time after time. Some high quality fixed mounts are even more expensive .

You can have the best optic in the world but if your mounts are of poor quality or not lapped properly than it's possible to loose zero even using fixed mounts.
