Does anyone know if people can fish in the lake?

So did you guys end up freezing any critical body parts off? It got cold in my fricking house, let alone out there in the wind. I was happy I had made the scout trip a half day hike. Think I'll hope for a bit more warm sunshine on the bug out trip itself.

I wasn't unhappy with the 4+ miles from Camp Tejas. Since I was packed quite a bit lighter than you guys, it only took me about an hour to get back from the site. I'm a bit sore today, but I'm outta shape, so I fully expected that.

It was great to meet Glitch20, and hang out with Spamity & Barr a bit. Got a much better idea of what I am looking for gear-wise, too.

Which reminds me - Glitch, send me a list of what you've got for sale, and I'll figure out what I'd like to snag.

I think we'll be moving the meetup point to the Russell Park trail head after glitch brought up that the security was a lot better there (as far as leaving your car parked overnight) .

Helix, Im going to PM you my number. But here is the information:

The name of the campground at Lake Georgetown is called Walnut Creek. Its located most conveniently through the Russell Park trailhead. To get to the Russell Park trailhead you simply turn south down CR 262 from Lake Dr and it dead ends in the Russell Park parking lot. I believe camping is 6 dollars. You can verify this with the ranger guy there. The full directions coming from I -35 are : 1. Heading north from Austin on I-35 you take the Williams/2338 exit (exit 261a) . 2. Take williams drive and take a left (west) on N Lake Rd also called FM 3405. 3. From there you take a left (south) on CR262 until you hit the park. It will dead end into the parking lot. Here is a picture of the parking lot via google maps :

Image

And here is an idea of where the campground is in relation to the parking lot. Its on an established trail. So basically you drop down to the main trail that loops the lake and then head west. Walnut Creek is located between trail markers 15 and 16.

Image

Also here is a pdf of the Lake Georgetown. http://files.georgetown.org/files/2009/ ... 4oct07.pdf As you can see below, we will be at letter "g" .

Image

I hope that squares everything away. Or...you know...you can just call me and ill walk up there and meet you at the trail head .

March Bugout---Complete!

Postby Spamity Calamity » Sun Mar 04, 2012 4:10 pm

Well here I am back and in one piece! It was a lot of fun and I hope that everybody learned something about their BOB's while they were out there. Some things I want to add are a way to charge my phone with a solar panel, a file and sharpening stone to maintain tool edges while out in the brush. Also a saw! Dear lord I need a saw. I also need to go ahead and get a dedicated (and faster) method of purifying water. A big thanks to the people that took the time to show up and participate. Sometimes it's hard to get up and get out there but yall did it and did Chapter XXX proud.

Anyway's pictures! I would have taken more but my phone's battery was less than robust.

Purifying lake water. It takes a while but it does the trick.

I wanted to try out the reception on my little Marathon radio. It's gotta be one of the smalles AM/FM/SW radios out there. It worked pretty good. Once you pulled strung up my 25 ft reel antenna the SW stations really started coming in.

Checkthebackseat won sexiest lumberjack title lol .

glitch was runner up! ha!

Putting an edge on my cold steel shovel with a file and later a stone.

Once you got that shovel sharpened, it turned into a pretty handy chopper.

Fish were jumping out of the lake like crazy on Friday evening.

Got OG with the fire making.

Special thanks to Spamity for all of the time and organizing he did for this Bug Out campout. :!: I really enjoyed both the informative and social aspect of it. Besides, food always tastes better next to a camp fire. I learned a few things on this trip, like; when packing for myself and two kids I need to really watch pack weight, I need to add freeze dried food in place of heavy grocery food items where possible, cut down on carried water if possible, appropriate seasonal clothing is essential, and it is important to know how much weight your kids are comfortable carrying. I have to give this get together a big thumbs up.

It was a lot of fun!

Special thanks to Glitch20 - as my son and I are now started on gear. Sorry you didn't feel well and couldn't stay another night. I've got the other $25 I owe ya, too, Glitch. More than happy to get it to you during the week, as you like.

I'm becoming a bit more comfortable when heading out. We'll pick up more gear a little at a time. Next item is definitely a proper backpack, but I'm absolutely going to hit the dollar store at Helix's suggestion, too. Lots of easy purchases there.

Helix - it was cool to meet you & your kids! I'm sure we'll be heading out there again in the near future - perhaps as a day hike, as my wife and daughter expressed some interest once we got back. And my son and I will certainly be camping out that way again, at a minimum. Please do give me the model # or name for your pack. I think I will pick that one up as my next big piece of gear. And I'm all ears on learning how to hunt. :)

CheckTheBackSeat - It was good to hang out with you & yours, as well. I think between the food & the firewood, you guys kept us running the most! You certainly came in packing the most! hahahahha

And Spamity, of course - hats off for organizing this. We had a blast! Keep up the good work.

I'm definitely up for a burger night or something like that, too. Who knows - maybe there's interest in a regular movie/poker/games night? Food for thought.

So now, between the camping & all the gardening I did when we got home, I'm beat. Gnite all!

ZAG, here is the link to the pack that I use.

If you have any questions, just PM me and I will answer anything that I can.

I could not find the hand saw that I use but I found this one from ACE that also uses the reciprocating saw blades like mine.
