In Northeastern Pennsylvania we patrol our neighborhoods with dogs to ensure there is no zombie encroachment. The fact that this gives us vital exercise and time with our dogs is just a happy coincidence. Yesterday we were on patrol at Jacobsburg State Park in Belfast, Pa. A known zombie habitat with my Zombie Response Dog "Riley" a crossbreed Bernese Mountain Dog/Labrador Retriever or "Labernese". This breed is being bred in Canada as service dogs and zombie hunters. Riley is sporting his new Zack and Zoey pack. Note how when Riley smells a zombie (or in this case a dead squirrel) he has been trained to alert by forming the letter "Z" with his tail.

Clearly a highly trained and potent anti-zombie force multiplier, that Riley of yours. Don't forget to give him lots of Beggin' Strips to keep him highly motivated.

There have been recent and credible reports of large hordes of undead moving out of the Poconos in recent days. Hope you and your canine assistant can handle all those non-stationary cadavers.

Patrol carried out in West Bangor, Pa. Two mile patrol concentrating on the Verona Ave area. False alarm caused by the omnipresent herd of deer.

After action: West Bangor all secure, Riley (carrying 5 pound pack) tired but still game. Beggin 'Strips for Riley, pint of Yeungling for me. We live to patrol another day.

Sadly, reports indicate Mt. Airy has been overrun. Spotted among the maurading hordes was a decrepid old female zombie in a faded floral dress, leading a small troupe of much smaller zombies down the mountainside, singing.

Subject: Weekly patrol of Appalachian Trail above West Bangor/Pen Argyl, Pa.

After action report: Patrol conducted on southbond AT for 1.5 miles from Fox Gap to an Area known as Wolf Rocks above West Bangor. Weather was cold with freezing rain, Elevation: 1505 ft. Riley the Zombie Response Dog humped an 8pound ruck and did well and alerted once. A few suspicious items were noted and a few tactical conclusions were made. See attached photo recon.

Dicey moment... Note Riley's tail forming a "Z" which proved to be animal carrion and not the undead.



Shades of the Umbrella Corporation? Government research facility found with observation platform and tagging equipment...are they tagging zombies and tracking movements through the Poconos?? Closer inspection showed this to be an abandoned Avian tagging station.


Kinda looks like an Umbrella... doesn't it?

Mission: Patrol of Northampton County, Pa "Rails to Trails" (former rail grade) just west of West Bangor.

After action report: Weather: Sunny Temp: 47º F Elev: 300 ft. Riley's pack: 8lbs. Additional crew: Wallace the stubborn, willful Basset Hound. This one was dicey with a few close calls. Photo recon attached.

This long flat former rail grade has been converted to a trail which is nice for now but could easily be a zombie horde super highway from the densely populated Easton, Pa to my relative Eden in West Bangor. This could be a problem...


During the patrol, both dogs alerted to something in the woods, as I investigated I found what I was sure was my first Zombie! I was concerned that Riley's tail had not formed the telltale (tail?) "Z".



The creature was indeed stumbling around aimlessly in a MOST Zed like manner. I limbered up and prepared to use my Lobo. However upon closer exam the "Zed" was found to be a "Geocacher" which of course is an easy mistake to make. Any doubt was removed when he pulled out his cellphone to "phone-a-friend" for a clue to find the cache (lame).


Always trust Riley's tail...

End result: Successful patrol, Beggin Strips for the lads, Cheese-steak and a pint for me.
Pennsylvania does have its advantages...

I must report in from Bushkill, Mt. Airy has been overrun for some time (according to my fiance the front desk manager) as well as Fernwood and most of Pike and Monroe County. These Zeds set off the "Elsa Alert System" frequently. The following is a test of the Elsa Alert System...notice how it goes from dormant to full alert relatively easily.

The four members of our Zombie patrol group had a good outing a few months back that I was able to get a few good pictures of. We patrol our 50 acres of rural western NY very regularly, but I don't have those pictures with me here at my day job.

Here is the XO and the scout (Rossi) ready to take on the wilderness and untold swarms of the walking dead.


Here is the heavy gunner (Copper) ready to take down any potential threats, be them undead, avian, or wooden.


We started our patrol route at a local park... Here is Copper warming up for a good convoy.


Out of nowhere, a silhouette appeared, and after Rossi pointed, Copper went for the takedown! Here he is launching into ferocious battle!


After a long and arduous battle with an unrelenting enemy, Copper emerged victorious, and the undead stick was vanquished. The flowers surrounding the stick's shallow grave were excellent spoils of war.


After the local park was deemed clear of enemies, we convoyed back to the yard, where Rossi chased down the practice undead balls with surprising ferocity.


After the training session was over, a hearty meal of venison (from the back 40, roast for the CO/XO, ground for the scout/gunner) and potatoes was enjoyed by all... Followed by a group nap session. Pictures were deemed too cute for public consumption at this point, and will have to be distributed at a later date.

Mission: Conduct patrol of the area east of West Bangor in area cleverly called "East Bangor". This patrol was done at a Celtic park known as "Columcile" (http://www.columcille.org) It is a park designed for peaceful reflection, exercise and relaxation. Built as an homage to the megaliths or standing stones of Ireland, Scotland and the islands of the Hebrides, or from their website "A playground of myth and mystery located in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Pennsylvania.
a park rooted in Celtic spirituality and inspired by the Isle of Iona off the coast of Scotland. An outdoor sanc, tuary open to the public as a sacred space for quiet meditation." This place is amazing, about 3 miles from my house and I don't get here enough. And at dusk it is creepy as hell! Romero would die to film here. Zombies, Vampires, Banshees those freaks from the "The Wicker Man" (especially them...for reals) you name it is around every bend of this amazing place.

Crew: Myself and one creeped out Riley the Zombie Response Dog. Weather: partly cloudy, 50ºF Equipment: typical EDC for me and an 8lb ruck for the wonder dog.

After action report: Zero alerts from Riley and I found no Zed sign HOWEVER this place could be construed as ground zero for creepy and the ghouls might have just stepped out. This is more of a raise em' from the dead Voodoo zombie vibe here gentle readers. Every where you look there are standing stones, sacrificial type alters and about 300 cairns lining the trails...think the Blair Witch Super Bowl. In the end it was just as promised, a peaceful place for reflection and rejuvenation but I still ended up running out of the park screaming "Killing me won't bring back your goddamn honey!" I give it two Zeds up, Riley says check it out. Photo recon attached.

Conclusion: I am not sure if this place is going to attract the undead or repel them...only time will tell. But it is worth seeing.
I think I am going to their "Spring Equinox"or the Bealtainne (Beltane) party. I hear a little girl is missing, maybe I can help find her. Wish me luck!

Looks like it's been good that I've been buged-in with a sinus infection here in Pike County. Now that I am almost feeling 100%, I will be ramping up my patrol in my area. Reports to follow.
