Looking for a Decent Optic

Postby RELOAD » Wed Feb 15, 2012 8:26 am

...... For a decent price... I just dropped a shizz load of $ on my AR. I am not looking to get divorced over this gun. I would like a holographic sight but probably cannot afford it... Any other suggestions?

I could always just stick with the flip up sights for now...

IDK, decisions decisions...

If you want less expensive BUIS (flip up sights) you can go with Magpul. They are popular.

If you want BUIS that you will never regret, get TROY. They are awesome but a little pricier, around $100.

There are a lot of RDS (red dot) sights on the market that are cheap. Cheap = Crap. Therefore, you better off spending money on descent RDS that you will not regret.
Eotech or Aimpoint are industry standards. Eotech is less expensive, but that does not make it worse! Just different in many respects.
You can get brand new Eotech for under $500.
You can get used in pristine condition for around $300. That is what I did, and I am very happy with it.
Look at Trading Posts here at Zombie Squad, AR15.com forum Trading Post, and m4carbine.net Trading Post. You can always find something there.

Agreed... if you're short on cash, buy some quality irons now and purchase quality optics later when you have enough cash to do it right.

You can find a new Eotech XPS2 for under $400 if you time the deals right. Just be patient.

Why start a thread and be completely vague about what a "decent price" means...for some it may mean $25...for others it may mean $1,000.

This is one of the more versatile optics you can get for an AR and it is less than an Eotech. buy once cry once.

Looking for a Decent Optic

Postby Orphancow » Thu Feb 16, 2012 8:42 am

I just picked up a Simmons red dot for 60 bucks from gander neat little guy for the price easy to install on my CMMG AR. I too just spent a ton on my AR (let's just say the wife holds her composure quite well), she is amazing lol

I just got the Aimpoint Micro H-1 for my new build. Not much more than an EOtech. Probably the last optic I will ever purchase, so the price is justified.

If you feel the need to spend less than a hundred bucks on a red dot, get the Bushnell TRS-25. I paid $80 for mine, beat the hell out of it through 1k rounds and it stayed spot on. I've dropped it on concrete and hardwood floors and no issues. You can get a $10 UTG riser (.75" or .83") that will give it a 50/50 co-witness with BUIS. Poor man's Aimpoint micro.

Surprised nobody has said these two yet.Look into Primary Arms Microdots and also Vortex SPARCs.I have heard almost all good things about both although have never personally used either.I kind of want to get PAs Ultimak/Microdot combo for 170 but am not sure it will handle x39..

You may want to take a look at the Vortex strikefire red dot scopes. Vortex is a repetitively new company, but for $170 they make a very good quality red dot sight. I have 2 of them, and no complaints

I second the Vortex Strikefire. By no means and aimpoint/eotech but definitely a very nice optic that doesnt break the bank.

Don't forget Trijicon, Swarovski, Leupold, Nightforce, Schmidt&Bender, Valdala, Meopta, and US Optics. :D

It's a rich and beautiful market full of optics that cost more than I make in a month.

For cheap/decent the Vortex strikefire w/ red ONLY dot is a good start (the red/green strikefire and sparc seem to get the most negative press).

The Aimpoint PRO is topnotch and is currently my top pick for budget-minded consumers. There's always Ebay; but, be careful wading through the sea of airsoft knock-offs.

Itll be fine.

Primary Arms and Vortex are the closest thing to actual Aimpoints at a discount price. If you want a good red dot with great CS and warranty, go with either of those two. If you want battle proven, get an aim point or Eotech. If you get Eotech, I'd only buy the new version, as they have fixed a lot of issues. If it's aim point go Aimpoint PRO, good savings relative to M4S, unless you need/want a smaller tube/less weight/more $$, then go Aimpoint Micro (H1/T1/R1)

^This.

Great quality illuminated 1-4 optic with good glass. It is cheaper than an eotech by a couple of hundred and much cheaper than adding an eotech + 3x magnifier (also significantly lighter than that combo). There are a few other nice optics out there that may do the same thing as the tac30 only a little better, but are much more expensive.

ar15.com seems to love them as well.

Tasco red dots are a decent cheap option, they may not be the toughest, but you can buy 10 of them for less than any Aimpoint or EOTech.

I have the Eotech EXPS2-2 OPMOD and love it. I swore off all Aimpoints... until I played with the Aimpoint PRO. I would recommend one of these two. You can easily get by with less, but you get what you pay for with them.

The question is here: do you just want a red dot to fuck around with? Or do you want a combat optic that you can count on not to fail you when the chips are down?

Save up the cash, buy quality, learn from our mistakes :D

Eotechs can be had used for under 400. Aimpoint PRO for under 500.

PSA had Aimpoint H1s on a quick release mount for around 500 as well.
