Glad this is working out! I'm excited! No one should worry about being entertained. I don't mind some ladies time inside that evening if that sounds fun to anyone and we aren't far from beer or liquor at all for those who might want to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. I'm USUALLY a good hostess so I will do my best to keep it fun for everyone =]

That's a pretty good price. But sadly I shouldn't have even spent the money on the AR.

Okay I thought I would throw some sort of info up for those of y'all who are coming.

Date: March 17-18

Time: Show up whenever. Will be stepping off around noon

What to bring: Whatever you plan on shooting. We are going to supply the burgers and hot dog stuff. We request that you bring some chips or cokes. Also we are gonna supply a shitload of water for the range.

Address is:
250 Comanche County Road 335
Dublin, TX 76446

Phone number is available on request. or you can add me on http://www.facebook.com/strube0119

We will step off at noon on a short walk to the range. We will be walking on the property the whole time so open carry is permitted and encouraged. Sometime near dark we will walk back to the house where we will be cooking burgers and Chase will hopefully be making Texas Turbo Dogs. I intend to sleep out in the yard and welcome everyone to join me but there are places to sleep inside for those who want to.
My dad is trying like hell to get the .50 cal and will definitely be bringing his .300. If he does get the .50 you will probably have to buy ammo from him if you want to shoot it, which is a fairly reasonable request considering the cost of .50 BMG.
Lesli says she will entertain wives but also wants them to know that they will have to be at the range for at least some of the day.

If I missed anything let me know please.

ETA: we have a ford ranger to use as a supply/transport truck for those who don't wanna walk

I'll have to see how my schedule comes together, but I'd definitely like to make it out.
If we're doing stuff at 450 I might bring my ancient 700 in .243.
Are we going to be shooting paper or steel? I'm not much of a rifleman, so steel would probably be much less embarassing. ;)
Hope to make it out; sounds like a great time.

i say we put a piece of plywood out there and staple a deck of cards to it, play sniper poker. steel sounds fun as well.

The berm is essentially a log cabin made from telephone poles and filled with sand.

i have about a dozen silhouette targets i can take out as well. But if we can get some steel, that would be fun too.

i think its just some AR500 plates put on a stand. i dont have that much experience with them, but maybe mild steel would work so long as you dont use AP ammo on it? i usually use paper because its much cheaper

well I mean if it's just for the sound I'm sure I can grab something. We have a machine shop too and a giant pile of drops and scrap. I have literally never shot steel.

this is just a random google image of "steel target"

you can also probably make a cheap wooden frame and hang a target off of it, and that may allow you to shoot larger rounds at it without too much more damage. if you have a bunch of scrap wood and metal laying aorund, making something tooo shoot at shouldnt be too unpossible.

Shooting steel is nice since you don't have to tape holes/change targets. Great for shooting at mid to really long ranges, and having instant feedback as to whether or not you are on target. You'll get a very audible "thwack" or a ping, that sounds totally different from hitting the berm. Also, depending on how you mount it, you can get some movement if you use a .308 or similar caliber. I wouldn't use the .50 on it though.

The drawbacks are that if you don't have some pretty thick steel, you'll wear it out pretty quick. Especially if shooting the greenies (steel core). Also, you don't want to be shooting rifle rounds too close, because of the potential for ricochets back at you. I wouldn't shoot centerfire rounds closer than 50 yards. The other drawback is when trying to milk the last bit of accuracy out of a rifle. It can be tough to see the exact location of hits. You can spray paint the front of the plate with white, fluorescent orange, or something like that to help with seeing the target and hits, but you don't get the pretty little holes.

I can't find any pictures of the set my brother and I made, but this is how we did it the first time.

The easiest way to mount them is to drive two t-posts, or pipes, into the ground at least 5 or 6 feet apart. Then run another t-post/pipe/steel rod along the top. You can weld it all together, but it makes it a pain to take down and move if you have to. You don't need much plate, maybe a 1' x 1' piece. When you start getting to longer ranges, I might make it a little bigger. I suggest bailing wire. Weld two lengths of chain to the "back" of the plate, long enough so that you can hang the plate about halfway down from the top crossbar. Just loop the chain over the top of the crossbar and attach it back on itself with some bailing wire or run a bolt/nut through the links. If you're not a horrible shot, you shouldn't ever be hitting the posts or top bar. The chain might take a bit of a beating, but you can reconnect the links however you want.

Edit to add: The reason you want it move some is that once you get out past 500 yards it starts to get tough to hear the hit, but you'll likely get some swinging/movement.

Actually I just talked to my dad and he opposes the use of steel targets so that pretty much settles whether we will be using them or not.

Yeah, I kind of got fired up myself a little, too. LOL I wonder what the hotel policy is on welding in your room?

I'm going to try. But it's kind of hard to justify flying down there and not seeing my daughter. You guys are nice and all, and we'll be shooting/blowing up stuff, and camping, but.....
