This sounds similar to what I had in mind.

P.A.W. ideal job... Treasure Hunter.
And not in the Indiana Jones / National Treasure sence. I would be a member of a small recon / scouting team. We would go out and scavenge any tools or materials that the craftsmen in the town or village request in thier efforts to fabricate tools or simple machines, medicines, etc. My team would consist of 5 to 7 members. The billets would be as follows:

1 - Pathfinder - Member goes ahead up to half a mile and ensures safe passage, acts as navigator as well.
2 - Flankers - Side security durring movments and security at scavenge sites.
3 - Main Body - Primary scavenger team. Consits of most senior and most junior members of the team.

When work is sparse, I would run an inn with my wife. Something in the fasion of the "Prancing Poney" in the Lord of the Rings series.

I always enjoy (even now, pre apocalypse) being the right hand man. Not necessarily the one in charge but the one who gets things done. Similar to the lead henchman in Book of Eli but without the forced marraige / tyrant thing going on.

I don't like being in one place for too long so I would need a job that allows me to travel a little.

I am also a skilled craftsman (welder, carpenter, mason) so I would be useful on those fronts as well. I have inadvertantly already trained myself for a P.A.W. I just need to find like minded folks with whom to form a colony or village.

What would your ideal PAW job be?

Postby Tperkins » Tue Jan 10, 2012 1:25 pm

Hm...I'd have to say auto mechanic while vehicles are still around. After that, likely the security and defense areas, or general handyman.

Edit: Also, a medic or radio tech.

Well, I'm old and fat now, so maybe a teacher/mentor. I can shoot well, but running away might be a problem  so no GI Joe for me.
I'm (was) a carpenter by trade, and am an engineer (civil - always polite - ) by training, but I've done a lot of other things. I can work wood with minimal tools, thanks to many hours spent watching Roy Underhill on PBS, and practicing what I saw.
Spent quite a few years of my youth work in a vet clinic, doing all sorts of stuff, including getting my hands wet in surgery; doing animal rescue (minor stuff, raccoons in attics/basements, freaked out dogs/cats). Still have all my fingers, so I guess that went well.
Some experience with household voltages, as well as some electronics work, but I'm banking on that being in low demand in the PAW.
I guess my ideal PAW job would be staying alive, ha ha, and trying to be useful. I'd be happy being the boss, or if there's a good one around, I'm quite happy to be a cog in the machine.

Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

Scavenging is still taking what is not yours, which the last time I checked, was illegal, and as such, is against forum rules. Just a friendly Mod warning.

Neither the denotation or connotation of "scavenger" implies stealing. It is collecting unwanted material, refuse, or other unowned/unclaimed material.

Still, however you may define it, it is still frowned upon here. Feel free to PM me or any member of the Moderating team for an explanation.

Nope. THAT is perfectly legal. So long as that's what you're talking about you're in the clear and we're all one big happy family! Now that we've cleared up that, let's continue on with this conversation in a legal, ethical, public-face-of-a-charity-organization manner that promotes co-operation and harmony because we would never talk about looting, pillaging, or any other illicit activities that can get us banned without warning!!! (because this IS the warning) Doesn't that sound like fun? :D :D :D

Honestly, collecting cans for use as shingles would be an intereting project. Would be a pain in the ass to actually USE them I'd think, but it would work.

Present day scrapping normally involves honest to god waste that has been dumped along side the road, normally illegally, and in every other context requires the written consent of the property owner to be entirely above board and beyond reproach. Around here the more serious scrappers won't touch a thing off of someones property without something being written and some pictures being taken with a cheap digital or disposable camera.
