Re: Mom's Journal of the Zombie Years

Postby Kathy in FL » Sat Dec 31, 2011 12:07 am

I don’t remember being moved. I was already in a lot of pain and when two of the men got me upright it was either puke or pass out … and since I didn’t have anything left to puke it was lights out whether I wanted it to be or not. When I did come to it was with the idea that my legs were being chewed on by something mean and nasty. My first reaction was to go for my blade; whether to kill what was eating me or to sanitize myself I still don’t know and don’t really want to ponder on it too hard.

I heard a male voice say, “Good thing you told us to move that wicked piece of sharp out of her reach.”

Hissing quietly I told the voice, “Give … it … back.”

Iggy put a gentle but firm hand on my arm bringing me back to reality and told me, “Easy. You’ll get it back just as soon as I’m sure you can hold it without hurting yourself. Everyone else can take care of themselves. Isn’t like you are going to be running anytime soon.”

I sighed realizing he spoke the hard truth. I knew he’d had enough time to examine me and I had to know. “Iggy, exactly how bad is it? And the truth if you please.”

Iggy nodded and respected me enough to know that I wasn’t just tossing bravado around. “Bad. You did a good splint. Right now it appears to be a fracture rather than a complete break and you probably saved yourself some misery by taking care of it early. The puncture wound …”

He looked a question at me to ask me what caused it. Trying not to gasp at the fresh memory that pain was bringing I told him, “Arrow. Broken shaft. I pulled it out and tried to dilute some peroxide to clean it.”

He blanched. “Dilute it with what?”

“Hooch.”

He just shook his head and said, “You’re lucky. But …”

Stretching a bit and finding that it seemed to help abate the pain I responded, “But?”

He shrugged. “Even with no infection it is going to leave a scar Sissy. Like a burn or something very similar to it. I can’t tell just how ugly yet. I’ve field dressed it but nothing is going to prevent scarring.”

I looked at him and then snorted. “Do you honestly expect me to go into hysteria over a scar?! I was worried about losing one leg or both … and that’s assuming that blood test thingie shows I’m infection free.” Stretching seemed to be bringing me relief so I did it again.

Iggy shrugged again. “Does it make you feel better if I tell you not to count your chickens? You aren’t out of the woods yet. There’s still infections of all sorts not to mention bullets, mad men, and …”

Something had just occurred to me. It was one thing or another and I preferred it to be the less lethal option. “Iggy? Did you … you … drug me?”

“Why?”

“Because if you didn’t then you need to get gone and far away from me. I’m uh … not hurting as bad as I was.”

A brief look of satisfaction crossed his face. “Good. I popped you with a couple of grains of … let’s just call it the good stuff and leave the explanation at that. OK?”

I was beginning to feel detached and suspected that the “good stuff” was really good stuff. “Heeeyyyy, noooo problem. Kind of a relief, was starting to worry I was about to turn into a ‘shroom.”

Iggy turned his face away and looking back I suspect it was to maintain a straight face. I am a very, very happy drunk though I don’t normally remain conscious long enough for people to get a good look at me making a fool of myself. He’d doped me just enough to take the edge off but that was still all it took to bring on Mrs. Happy Hen. This would play out more later. For good or ill I was no longer feeling any serious pain.

One of the men came over and told Iggy, “She’s clear. But the Cap’n says leave her. They’ve got a bunch o’ wounded that need looking at. Some of ‘em might turn if you don’t get to ‘em fast. We’ve tucked her up here and we’ll send someone back ASAP we can spare ‘em. Cain’t really anything happen to her before then from this position.”

Iggy did some fancy cussing and looked about as torn in two as I ever remember seeing him. “Iggy … go.” He opened his mouth but I forestalled him, likely smiling like a complete idiot. “Leave a gun and my blade. Under the circumstances it’s completely kosher. I promise to stay out of trouble til the calvary gets here. Do me a favor though and shhhhh, don’t tell Scott. I’m gonna be in wicked hot water when he finds out.”

Iggy winced and I almost lost my argument when I said that I promised to stay out of trouble. Then he shook himself and sighed. “Get into trouble if you have to Sissy, just don’t get dead. I got enough to live with without adding you to the total.”

“Roger Dodger that. Iggy dear, don't you worry one little ol' bit.”

With one last shake of his head Iggy and the other men crept away less than comfortable with the choice they were forced to make, but none of my happy went with them though under the circumstances it really should have. In fact I was feeling rather good, better than I had in quite some time. Which was fortunate as just about that time the wave that was supposed to be heading straight at Sanctuary got a little side tracked and my “safe haven” was ever so slowly developing a bullseye on it.

Happy New MOAAARRRRR!

Thanks Kathy!

I can't remember who, but one of the kind forum members emailed me a copy and i converted it to the .mobi file format for my kindle using the "calibre" program. I just finished This is me Surviving again, Forsaken Harvest (somehow i missed the last couple of chapters) and started MJOTZY's over again...it is 2000 pages so far not counting her recent posts!!!!

Check out her blogs..."This is me Surviving" is my favorite so far (my DW as well)...Gurl is one that is in progress and is really good.

I learn so much from the stories...I'm underlining lots for future research of my own preps.

Hmm, I was sorta joking, but...

Kathy do you mind if we make a ebook copy of this? I have calibre as well so could convert it to a nook friendly variety, of course we'd share the epubs here in this thread.

Wanted to double check with her before we went through the effort and rather have her permission and all.

Anyone can make a copy for their own purposes off line. All I ask is that no one tries to make a profit off of it. I posted this puppy for free because I could. I have gotten a tremendous amount of technical help from so many if I tried to list them all I would undoubtedly miss giving credit where credit is due. If you enjoy it enough to want it offline then I'm honored, just want to protect the others that have contributed and made this fun for everyone.

Wow, just wow. I have been reading for a week straight and am only around page 94. I decided to go back and copy/paste the entire thing beginning to end so I can read it on my e-reader away from the computer. This story has been awesomeness incarnate.
Kathy please keep it up.
I will once, and only once, politely ask for moar.
