22 conversions UMP, SCAR, M249 SAW, MK43 M60, M14 EBR, TAR21

New member to this forum. Just wanted to show you guys using airsoft shell conversions to dress up my Marlin 795. I'm still working on the XM8, TAR21 and M4 S System conversion.

UMP is 50% done. I've put in about 3 hours so far. I just finished dremeling the inside. I still have to SECURE everything by bedding it properly with Devcon steel putty to make a mold, aluminum reinforcements walls, rubber spacers, better screws and retaining pins.

Dont mind the jagged edges around the trigger guard. I still have to file it down and make it smooth. I'll be putting a fake suppressor on it as well. Respraying it with flat black gloss duplicolor.

My main priority is making this SECURE and SAFE.

Here's the M249 shell still in its airsoft form. I worked on this a few days ago and the receiver has already been gutted and dremeled for fitment. Still working on fitting the pistol grip since I have to move it back towards the stock.

Need to bed it with steel epoxy putty.
Need to move the pistol grip further back to the stock
Need to drill the barrel more to fit over the marlin barrel
Need to refinish everything in black

Tavor TAR 21
Airsoft form. Will start marlin 795 conversion next week.
This will be my first bullpup conversion so I need to figure out how to work the trigger linkage system using a hanger.

Older pics. My other baby Saiga 12 - AK47 12 gauge shotgun (took about 3 hours to convert). Yes I know my magpul sights are on backwards. They're fixed now.

So... You are converting airsoft guns to shoot real bullets? How is this not illegal? Are you using a serialized receiver that sits inside of the gun or something?
Thanks Anianna!

No. That's illegal.

The airsoft electrical components were gutted and no longer in use.

I'm using a legal, DROS, serialized Marlin 795 .22LR. These shells are either made of polymer plastic or metal. The receiver just sits inside and is bedded with epoxy and brackets to keep it secure from movement. Trigger group is still part of the receiver as well as the barrel. This is no different than building my own wood stock from scratch or using aftermarket stocks like tapco, promag, etc and just have my .22 receiver/barrel sit inside.

Overall length is no less than 26". Barrel length is 16" minimum by law. Magazine is 10 round limit by law in my state. Window for serial number is exposed. If the stock is collapsible/foldable, they're fixed or pinned with a screw.

It is lawful to make your own guns, not for resale and there is no law stating you must serialize the reciever. You only have to serialize if you are a manufacturer. This would only be unlawful is he were to make an NFA item. I can't see the pics, soo...

I don't see anything illegal about it. He's just putting a regular .22 inside an airsoft shell.

yea i dont plan on reselling these. its just for my own personal benefit to see if i can customize modern stocks/shells to go with my .22LR. im not really into that wood stock or sporting look. all my guns are purchased at my local gun store, DROS and follow the 10 day waiting period.

even if a LEO were to ask, i can easily pull out the receiver and show the serial number and show its a .22 rimfire NOT a centerfire assault weapon. i also bring copies of my paperwork and calgun's flowchart to the range.

Yeah that was what I was asking. He said something about converting airsoft weapons in the first sentence, and then later the marlin receiver.

will do. i shot my G36/Ruger 10/22 at an indoor range. i had several misfeeds but i think it was due to the crappy remington gold ammo.

i cant wait to finish these.

Not the most practical thing in the world but damn cool none the less. My only concern is the function of the original safety. Not a real big deal given that these are range toys and not working guns but it might be an issue in some cases if you can't engage the safety.

Certainly a creative and fun hobby. I suspect the airsoft guns cost more than the real .22s you mount into them.

I clicked this thread in hopes of a viable .22lr conversion for my SCAR 16S.

Whoops.

They look decent from a distance, I guess, but the illusion disappears when you have to reload constantly.

I guess I don't see the point beyond just dressing up to look cool, kinda like airsoft.

I'd love to take the SAW out to the local "Fudd" range.

i have my AR15 and my Saiga 12 that i also shoot with.

the main point is to dress up my .22's for that modern look and to get people at the range to do double looks or laugh at the"WTF" reactions when they see an M249 SAW and an M60 at a range.

the original safety is still intact behind the trigger. i cut out the lower receiver to expose more of the trigger guard because it sits pretty high.

yep theyre just range toys. i dont plan on doing any tactical training or competition.

by the end of 2012, im likely to have about 10-12 marlin 795's.

each marlin runs about $135-$149 at my local gun store

each shell are used which runs about $50-$100

the only shells that run about $200 are the M14 EBR, M60, TAR21 and M249 SAW. its hard to find these and theyre made out of metal (except for the TAR21)

the M249 SAW retails $400-$600 new. i got it for $100 used.
the TAR21 retails $400-$500 new. i got it for $200 used. (this is discontinued so its rare to find this)
M14 EBR retails $600 new. i got it for $100 used.
M60 retails for $400-$600 new. i got it for $220 used.
SCAR retails for $200 new. i got it for $60 used
UMP retails for $100 new.

upcoming shells i plan to buy next year are FAMAS, L85, AUG, MP5A5, Tactical AK47, ACR, Sig 522

I was wondering would it be possible to put magazines into fake airsoft shells? Because this has me interested, I am probably going to buy a semi savage 64. But I really like the Dragunov SVD(its a bit tough on its legality in Norway) but getting a used airsoft gun is alright so, I was thinking would it be okay for me to dress up my future survival/plinking rifle? And can the "dress" be removed without much problems?

yea you just hollow out the airsoft magazine shell and dremel around it so it just slides over the real magazine. its essentially like a magazine shroud.

yes the dress should be removable without much problems since you do have to clean it right? some people use expanding foam to bed it and cut it in half so you can pull out the receiver. same can be done using epoxy steel putty, fiberglass, or aluminum brackets to secure the receiver.

Looks good! what model of SAW are you using. I need a New Barrel and front pistol grip mount for an A&K MKII SAW.
