How long would it hurt? Consider that each Zombie bite takes an oz or so of meat. How long would a person last?

As much as I enjoyed Max Brooks' work, I do not use him as a reliable reference. There are good bits of info but generally, it's just a fun read. I am talking about how long will it take to die, not turn. There are definitely variables involved. A bite/tear at a major artery/vein will decrease the pain time. What exactly would you die of?(sorry about the dangling participle) Exsanguination? Shock? Can a pack of Zeds actually rip you apart limb by limb or gut you? How long would you remain conscious? It would REALLY hurt is the only thing I am sure of.

Most people would pass out from the severe amount of pain before they would physically die.

Would a person pass out? I have broken my leg such that it was completely turned 360 degrees. Tib/fib shattered. I did not pass out. I was conscious until the ER people knocked me out. I do not consider myself as a Rambo or tuff guy, just an average Joe. I see how someone would passs out from blood loss, head trauma, or shock.

A 360 degree break it might have been, but I assume that you didn't screw around with your broken leg by playing 'twist the slab of leg around until the bottom half of my leg tears off', or 'beat the remaining bits of bone with my fist while they're still inside my broken leg'.

Imagine that you were goading a starved wolf by smearing bacon grease on your abdomen. Think that'd be fast?

The wolf's teeth have all been filed down to a molar-type profile.

So yes, you would likely pass out, probably even before exsanguination could knock you out.

I always wondered this myself. I don't think zombies would go for the guts like the the movies. The see the whole body as one big piece of meat. I believe it might be somewhere around 30 seconds to a minuet at most.

I think that after the inital bite you would go into shock if you weren't fighting. If you had been fighting the adrenaline would be going and you would probably last for a few minutes till one of the horde bites a major artery.

I agree with the idea of asking someone who has tangled with a bear (if they are alive). Since most zombies are running on more or less survival instinct, that would put them into the range of predators in the animal world. Cats tend to crush the trachea and/or sever the spinal column with "fangs". Since peeps don't have said teeth, I don't think this is an option. Canus predators (dogs, wolves, and I think hyenas?) don't really care if the animal is dead. They will tear out chucks while the animal is still alive. Crocs and gators do the "death roll" and drown and or just tear you apart. Once again, zombies don't have the teeth.

I would guess it would be similar to being eaten by geriatric, starving hyenas that aren't very good at hunting any more and have teeth worn down with age. I am agreeing with the idea of keeping an extra 9mil in my pocket to save myself the pain.

On that note, what would you keep in your kit to put yourself out of misery? Where would you keep it? Would you be able to maintain enough trigger discipline to save the last bullet for yourself or would you keep a last (and I mean last) ditch weapon. Have you thought about it or not? I hadn't. My ccw is a S&W Airlite in my left pocket. I put it there because it is safe, can't fail, easy to reach in almost any position. I never keep anything in my left pocket anyways. It doesn't rotate or shift (for me anyways, YMMV) and almost impossible to lose or taken. Been carrying like that on hunting, camping, fishing trips for a long time. I use a selfmade leather holster that stays in the pocket when drawn. You guys are great!! I start out with an imaginary scenario and end up with good info!
