IIRC from reading on this and various other forums, the M4 (14.5") would be the best match since that extra 1.5" of barrel really doesn't change my velocities enough to matter once the reticle is verified at the correct ranges.

Am I on the right track?

The BDC is a good guess, nothing more. I would buy a used 31F if you really want an RCO look-alike. But really, the BDC gives you a good estimate, and then you can just walk your rounds in from there.

If you are dead set on a RCO, get the M4 since it will most likely get put on a 14.5 or 16" gun.

Fwiw, a 31F shooting m193 out of a 16" barrel is within one MOA of the 31F BDC.

I currently own two optics, and my favorite is the Sig-Sauer STS-081. It's a lot like an Aimpoint mirco, but way cheaper. I picked it up for about $100 at a gun show in Georgia, and I hear they normally run for $150 or so. Apparently this is the same sight Sig's AR's were equipped with, so that pretty much sold me. Initially I had no idea Sig even made optics, and since they're handguns and rifles generally have great feedback, I decided to give it a try.

I set it up on my Golani, and it cowitnesses perfectly with my sights. For such a heavy rifle, I really wanted an ACOG or some high power scope to go with it, but I can't imagine using anything different. It's held zero, and was incredibly easy to get zeroed in the first place. The brightness its pretty impressive as I can easily see the dot at level 7/10 outside, with the sun to my back. They also come with a honeycomb, which is pretty dope.

They normally come with a heightened mount, and that same mount has an angled portion so you can still use your irons if you so choose. The battery life is pretty impressive as I accidentally left it on 6/10 for a solid 3 weeks and it was still just as bright as the day I got it. My only real beef is the lack of a QD. It came with two Allen wrenches ( one for the sight and one for the mount, and I lost the mount one), and they're custom sizes. No normal Allen wrench set will have the size that fits either one, so you kinda have to angle a smaller size to grab hold of a corner to take them off. Doesn't bother me too much, but its still a bit of a hassle every now and then.

For something as small, light and well priced as this, you can't beat it (unless you got $$$ to throw around.)

Thanks for the tip, muncher. I might consider this for my planned AR build.

Fellas, dirt cheap optic that works? This would be for my first AR/semi auto. I would of course have/use/train on irons, but I wouldn't mind getting a cheap red dot. I plan on buying a decent optic at some point, this would be semi-temporary and relegated to a "less critical" gun at some point.

Is there a decent manufacturer or does the rear sight not give enough stability for keeping an optic zeroed.

Or is the side mount/getting a bent bolt, the better way...

Here is what I would do. A Jmeck scope mount, which is completely non-permanent.

Combined with a bent bolt from the bolt man.

Another ZS member brought this sale to our attention not too long ago.
here. Might have to act fast, that sale has been going on for longer than any sale I've seen.

From what I best, bushnell's are pretty decent. I personally don't own one, but a fairly decent red dot for $70 is hard to pass up.

Actually, the rifle RCO is the one you want for a 16" barrel.

How so? Because you would be hitting low with the rifle RCO over the M4? Makes sense to me if that is the case.

I disagree, respectfully. I've had nothing but good things happen with that sight. So glad I bought it.

Very true. To be honest, I feel confident enough in the STS that I would have brought it back to Iraq with me.

In regards to bullet drop, the 16" is closer to the 20" rifle than the 14.5"

Drop it optic first attached to a rifle out of a moving vehicle ar 30 mph and get back to me. The big names are big for a reason.

It's withstood beatings like it was a red headed step son. I took it with me and mounted it on my M4 during my last gunnery at Fort Stewart. It took the red clay/mud, dirt, dust, sand (which I dropped it in plenty of times) etc like a champ. I was surprised it wad still going after sitting inside the Abrams after we had been going over rough terrain for over an hour. For a $100 sight, I was pretty impressed.

Well of course it wont hold up to an EOTech or ACOG or Aimpoint, that's why its $100-150 and not $600+. I for one can't afford either of those names, and like to get the best I can for anything $200 and below, especially when its going on a $500 rifle. And frankily, id like to see any optic survive a 30mph skid from a moving vehicle and still function somewhat properly. I've seen EOTechs and ACOGs be damaged just from dropping them from the side of a tank.
