October 16, 2010

Well yesterday and today was so damn busy, we are all tired. Of course I do not know who is more tired, the people who live here or Rommel. The kids seem to love Rommel. When they haven’t been sleeping and stuffing their faces they all are playing with Rommel. Right now, the big bastard is lying upside down on the couch with his tongue hanging out of the side of his mouth asleep.

All of the kids seem ecstatic about being able to go out and play without any fear of zombies and Bobby is having a blast being able to play with other boys again, and Fei loves her new girlfriends. The boys are a trip to watch. The boys dressed themselves up in Mossy Oak outfits and have been running around with sticks “slaying” mythical hoards of zombies. The girls spent hours drawing and doing little girl things.
Yesterday while the kids were keeping themselves busy Sam, Sara, and Jessica organized the bedrooms, sorted through all the clothing and boots pulling out the items that will fit the kids. Sara and Jessica have moved into Alex’s room and we will need to get one extra bed because Jessica and Sara had to share a bed (insert dirty fantasy thoughts here. I know I did when the girls asked for an extra bed). Dan moved in with Chris (gay guys, insert dirty fantasy thoughts here LOL).

We have just about run out of bleach cleaning Buff. We are going to have to locate a large supply. We will not always have to decontaminate Buff like we are now or the interior of the compound because a hoard got in. However, bleach is a necessity in a world with the walking dead. I am not sure how long the virus lasts outside the body but one can never to careful.

We also spent part of the day yesterday teaching Sara, Jessica, and Dan how to use the AR 180s. Chris gave his up to Dan. Chris switched to carrying one of the H&K 91’s. I like the 91 because it fires the .308 round and hits hard. However, the .308 is not the ideal zombie-killing weapon. It is a medium range weapon with a twenty round magazine. The ammo is heavy and you can’t carry a lot of it in conjunction with other gear, and when running, gunning, and scavenging you need to be lightweight. Chris is adamant about it though. I am sure it will come in quite handy against bandits and raiders if it ever comes to that.

Dan, Jessica, and Sara did well with the ARs and pistols. They aren’t sharpshooters but were very competent. All three had shooting experience so yesterday was more or less getting them familiar with their new weapons. All three decided to stick with carrying revolvers for backup weapons. We also have them all fitted out with tactical vests and MultiCam, we will have to get more tactical MOLLE vests if we get any more adults as we have no more. We had to explain to Sara and Jessica that the reason for MultiCam was not only for camouflage, but it would help each of us identify one another if someone were separated while we were out scavenging and were attacked by bandits.

One of the things I am glad we snagged back at the cul-de-sac is the Motorola FRS radios. We have ten of them along with the chargers and a base station model. We set the base station up in the lobby. I want to locate some antenna wire, solder it to the base station antenna, and then run it up and outside. According to the box the radio came in, it has a thirty six-mile range. I believe that is line of sight though and we will more than likely have only about a seven to ten mile range due to topographical obstructions. I think the antenna will help with at least someone at the lodge being able to contact anyone out scavenging at about ten miles out. I doubt the handhelds will get out past ten or twelve-mile range despite the twenty-four mile range claimed for this particular model.

We spent the rest of yesterday and today on construction projects. It turns out Dan is a pretty good carpenter. His father was a contractor and Dan spent a lot of time being taught by employees of his father’s on the art of woodwork. Dan designed and constructed the gate to the bridge leading over the trench to the vehicle park. All I have to say is that is one freaking sturdy gate. On each side of the gate, he constructed a wall extending ten feet on each side.
Sam and Chris teamed up and gutted all the wiring out of the cabin that had the tree sitting on top of it. They got the new workshop in the vehicle park wired up. Not only can it be run from solar power but the put in an alternate wiring system so we could use one of the generators to run all of the power tools when needed.

Chris came up with a plan for the cabins today and everyone like it. He said if allowed to go ahead and dig the trench around the vehicle park he would take the dirt and start making a berm around the cabins closest to the lodge. Chris believes we may eventually need more housing if we run into more survivors that can benefit our survival.

He must have spent quite a bit of time thinking up this idea. He has drawn up the plans even going so far as to mark where all the surrounding trees are. His more advance drawings for the final stages include another trench and a wall much like the one around the lodge, just not as thick. The wall will be approximately thirty five to forty yards from the cabins giving a nice green area for possible gardens, chicken coops or any type of livestock future residents may want.

We also used some of the additional aluminum siding on the towers. Dan built frames on three sides of the open space on the upper decks. We put in doors on the left and right side and openings on each side for future windows. At least this way a guard could be somewhat protected from wind and rain, they will just have to hope any cold wind or rain doesn’t come from the outer facing opening.

Today was productive as well. I am a little pissed at Chris. After he finished he made his way over to the cabins and proceeded to dig a trench around the fucking cabins. So now, the cabins have their own trench. He did leave a land bridge wide enough that we can drive the dump truck across. What fucking pisses me off is that he has wasted so much diesel fuel using the backhoe.

When I confronted him about it he just looked at me and asked who died and made me king. I guess he is right. I don’t own this place, but I did set it up in the beginning, I got the backhoe and I did bring his ass here. It would be nice if the fucker showed a little respect. I like Chris; I really do, but wasting fuel that is being used belongs to all of us and we may need it to do shit like, maybe run scavenging runs for supplies.

What he and the others who all seem to be excited about the trench and berm wall don’t realize is that all his work will be wasted if a rain comes. Yep a lot of that dirt will be washed back into the trench because there is no retaining wall to hold it back. Which means if we do finish this thing up we will have to do a lot of the work again wasting more fucking fuel and man-hours we don’t have to waste. Hell everyone else wasted hours cleaning up and airing out the four cabins.

While everyone wasted their time Rommel and I headed out to the woods for a hunt. I took the 700 and my Ruger MKII in case I came up empty on deer I could bag a few squirrels or rabbits. I had been out for several hours without seeing a thing. About a mile from the lodge I came across a small cabin sitting in a small clearing.

I glassed the cabin with the riflescope. It was a bit dilapidated but still habitable. There was a newer model Ford Ranger parked beside the cabin. It looked like it hadn’t moved in quite some time; it was covered in dirt and grime. I also noticed the back window was spider webbed in three different spots.
I got in a comfortable position and began to scan the area for life. After around an hour I was convinced no one was in the cabin unless they normally slept until eleven in the morning. I was rewarded with my patience when a large buck came from the woods to water himself at the small pond. I shouldered the rifle and dialed in the dope on my rifle. It looked to be a three hundred yards, and I had a ten mile an hour three quarter value wind.

The buck was being very attentive to his surroundings. As he lowered his head to get another drink he suddenly raised his head and froze looking towards the cabin. I panned left to see what had gotten his attention. Fuck all, I thought as my crosshairs settled on the zombie who had just rounded the corner of the cabin.

I quickly readjusted and got my crosshairs back on the buck. I would be damned if that dead bastard was going to cheat me out of the deer. I have a lot of mouths to feed and I wasn’t going to lose out on this one.

Before I could squeeze the trigger the buck bolted. I raised my head from the stock to get my eyes back on him. Oh if I lose this kill I was gonna so fucking kill that zed, hell I was gonna kill him anyway. To say I was elated when I saw what direction the buck was running would be an understatement. Rudolph was heading straight for me! I quickly lowered the magnification on the scope and then pulled the rifle to my shoulder.

Hitting a moving target like this deer, even running straight at you, can be a challenge. The deer was running a straight line but was taking large bounds as he went through the high grass. I timed my shot perfectly as he reached the apex of his jump. It was a sweet ass center mass hit. I watched him as he hit the ground, his front legs buckling underneath him, his antlers digging in to the ground twisting his neck and head.

I took him down about fifty yards from me. Hell, if I had waited much longer he would have run right the hell over me. I turned my attention back to the zed and lined the cross hairs up on his face. It took me three shots to get him down and dead. My first shot was a miss. My second grazed the left side of his face ripping a gouge in his check and spinning him almost three hundred and sixty degrees. The third, I have no idea where in the head I hit him, but it really didn’t matter. The bastard’s head exploded and he was down and out.

I reloaded the rifle as I made my way over to my buck. Damn, was he a nice one! He had a ten-point rack and was one big mother. He was at least two hundred fifty pounds. I pulled out my skinning knife and got to work. Rommel was just as excited as I was, especially when I tossed him the heart and liver.
The deer gutted I decided I would drag it over to the cabin and check it out. I knew I could get the truck back to this area and instead of doing a lot of heart killing labor I would just stage it there. If you never have had to drag or carry a deer out of the woods, hell even on flat ground, it can be a real ass kicker. I should have unloaded one of the emergency game carts and brought it with me. I guess I was too pissed off about everyone getting into the new wall and cleaning up the cabins to think about it. I just wanted to get the hell away from there for a while and do something useful.

Once at the cabin I laid the deer across the hood of the truck and circled the cabin looking for any more threats. Looking through the windows I saw no movement what so ever. Rommel seemed at ease but I didn’t take any chances. I leaned the rifle against the cabin wall and drew the Ruger. The door was unlocked and I shoved it open and stepped back to the side with my pistol leveled at the entrance.

Nothing came out trying to eat me so I went in. It was a small three-bedroom cabin and I could see just about everything. The doors to the bedrooms were open and devoid of anything living or dead. After my search I began to look for useful items. I didn’t hit a grand slam on loot but I think I hit at least a double.

I re-secured the cabin and headed back to the lodge. I freaked everyone out when I came walking up. I had forgotten I was covered in deer blood. I thought Sam was gonna pass out when she saw me. Everyone was not only relieved I was alright but everyone except Jessica got really excited about fresh deer meat. The girl has never had deer steaks and was almost repulsed at the idea of eating Bambi. Oh, well, that means more for the rest of us. City folks just kill me sometimes. I think they believe meat grows on trees pre-rapped and isn’t hunted in the woods or slaughtered in a slaughterhouse.

I got Ju and Dan to come with me since Chris wanted to get back to wasting diesel and digging trenches. We took the Ford and headed back to the cabin. Once there we stripped the place even the guys full size bed for either Jessica or Sara to sleep on. Thank goodness we couldn’t find the keys to the Ranger because Ju wanted to bring it back with us. We did siphon the gas, and take the battery to add to the solar power system.

Everyone pitched in to get the gear and food unloaded when we got back. There wasn’t much of a variety with the food. Two fifty pound bags of rice, thirty pound bag of black eye peas, two twenty five pound bags of pinto beans, several cases of beef stew, a couple cases of assorted fruits, and three cases worth of a variety of soups, and four cases of bottled water.

We also stripped out the small cast iron wood burning stove. We will head back and get the pipes later. We are going to install it in the guard tower by the front gate.

The man that owned the cabin was about the same size as Chris and Dan. So they lucked out and got several flannel shirts a piece, jeans, long johns, winter jackets, and three cold weather hunting bibs. The guy must have loved wool socks; he had twelve pair of the things. Those we would split between the four men in our group.

Now the part I love about taking shit from the dead, guns and ammo! In the Ranger we found a sawed off S&W 3000-12guage pump shotgun with a box of twenty-five rounds of number two duck shot. In the house I think Dan had an orgasm when he found an Ithaca Model 37 12 gauge with an eighteen inch barrel and extended magazine tube that had a brushed nickel finish with black stock and fore grip. This shotgun was favored by the LAPD for years, but the one they used was the blued model.

In the gun cabinet we found two Savage bolt guns with iron sights in .308, a .22 rifle, AR15 A2, and a SKS. In the cabinet below the guns we found two five hundred round bricks of .22, two seven hundred and forty round sealed tins of 7.62x39 and seventy-five rounds of 00 buck. To Chris’s delight there were three 200 round battle packs of NATO .308 FMJ ball rounds.

By the end of the evening we had all the food put away, the deer butchered, the weapons cleaned and put away, and the ammo stored. Not a bad day even if I did start off with sand in my clit. Over dinner we decided we were going to make a run tomorrow. We were going for fuel, metals, lumber, and Dan said he knew of a place where there was a diesel vehicle dealership that we could possibly get a panel van for hauling loot. The women wanted us to stop somewhere and find toys for the kids to help keep them occupied.

I will let you know how it goes tomorrow night.

October 17, 2010

For the trip today the team going would be Alex, Chris, Ju and me. Chris and Ju would be in the dump truck, and Alex and I would be in Buff. Our first stop was at the co-op to fill all the fuel jugs, and top off both the dump truck and Buff. We had emptied all the fuel containers topping off the generators, and all the vehicles. We had to load two of the two hundred and fifty gallon diesel tanks onto the dump truck with the forklift.

The ride to the co-op was uneventful. The gate was still secure; as we had left it the last time, we were here. While Alex and Chris started the fueling process, Ju and I began rechecking the warehouses for items we might want to take with us. We started in the second warehouse if you will remember from our last visit we believed this to be the supply building for the co-op.

I am glad we checked. We were able to locate quite a few engine parts, belts, and filters for the diesel trucks we had procured from the co-op and some of the parts could be used on Buff’s motor as well. Ju located two overhaul kits for the big diesel generator as well. In addition, we located twenty fifty five gallon barrels of motor oil for the diesel trucks, ten thirty gallon barrels of hydraulic fluid. We loaded five barrels of oil and eight of the hydraulic fluid onto the dump truck. We concealed the rest in the warehouse. We were going to have to make a dedicated trip back to the co-op for those. They were just too valuable to be left behind for someone else to scavenge.

Ju and I also located a pallet of three quarter inch treated plywood sheets, and another pallet of treated two by four boards. It looks like folks will be getting a bit of privacy in the rooms. Nearby I found quite a few power tools. We already had a pretty nice set of power tools but you can never have too many.
Once everything was loaded, we headed back to the lodge to unload. No one wanted be running around with all that flammable diesel and oil. Unloading went smoothly using the forklift. I would like to go by Lowes or Home Depot and get one of the flatbed trailers that have the forklift attached to the back end. Man, would that speed up loading and allow us to get bigger and better items that we could not manhandle up onto the trailers.

We headed back into town with our first stop a small toy store near Moore’s Sporting goods. Have I told you how fucking stupid I think it is to go toy shopping during the end of the world? Well if I have not, what a fucking stupid idea! I had to keep my mouth shut or risk the wrath of the women folk. Now I do not want you to get me wrong, I like kids, but our survival and the tasks it requires seems a bit more important than the children having a good time. Ju could tell it pissed me off and appeased me by saying it would give us a chance to stop by Moore’s and see if anything worth value was left.

Well apparently, the local zed population thought there might be something interesting at Moore’s Sporting Goods, they were everywhere. I used Buff to clear out the street just in front of Moore’s. I had to have crushed at least twenty of the damn things. Ju ran the dump truck right beside me in the opposing lane of traffic. The dump truck crushed the crap out of the zeds but it was just not as effective as Buff.

Ju slowed the dump truck down and fell in behind me. Chris radioed me and told me to make the block. He and Ju were going to start dropping zeds using some .22 rifles. I acknowledge him and made my turn to circle the block. Looking in the side view mirror I could see that Ju had made the turn also, but had stopped and backed up into the intersection. I could see Ju sticking the barrel of his silenced 10-22 out of the window and begin to fire. Chris was doing the same thing on the passenger side with a 10-22 he had gotten out of the armory. We had plenty of thirty round magazines for the things so volume of fire wouldn’t be a problem for them.

Alex asked me if what they were doing was a good idea. I told her I wish they had discussed their plan with me first but I felt that they would be all right. The dump truck was up high enough that unless Michael Jordan had turned into a zombie and was around here that they wouldn’t have to worry about a zed grabbing hold of their rifles or climbing into the cab. I could see that Alex was a little worried. I really think she has a thing for Chris, and the big dumb bastard is oblivious to it.

Circling back around I could see that Ju had done a good job of thinning the herd. I couldn’t see how Chris had done, but I am sure he did just fine. Once Ju saw me turning back onto the street he ceased fire and gunned the truck forward. Chris radioed that they would circle the block and be with us momentarily. I could see that Chris had downed about fifteen zeds on his side. There were still about ten to twelve more coming but they were not a threat at the moment.

I crushed six more zeds as I pulled up in front of Moore’s. Alex had opened one of the windows in the back on the passenger side and started firing through the shooting port and dropping zombies in the parking lot. I slid out of my seat and did the same by dropping the window on the passenger side door.

It seemed to take Ju and Chris forever to make the block, but they eventually pulled up and swung around in front of us. They both climbed out of the truck and onto the hood of it and began methodically firing dropping a fair number of zeds. Once the zombies were thinned out enough to a manageable level I radioed to the others to switch to melee weapons to conserve ammo, Alex was going to provide over watch for us. We might have a substantial amount of ammo but there was no sense in wasting it when we could use a little elbow grease to sanitize the area.

While we got to busting heads, Alex laid down fire on the distant zeds in a very deliberate and methodical way. I was pretty impressed at how calmly she picked out her targets and took the time for well-placed shots. I wanted to give her a good slap on the ass and tell her good job but felt like keeping my teeth so I would abstain from that.

Just to let you know, I swear I think I killed Justin Timberlake. The guy caught my attention because he was butt ass naked and was missing his Johnson. I am pretty sure I know what he was up to when the world went to shit. His face was a bit fucked up from decay but I just know it was him.

He was moving pretty good for a dead guy and was flailing his arms so I swung low shattering his kneecap and sent him pitching forward to the ground. I rammed my foot between his shoulder blades when he tried getting up, pinning him to the ground before I smashed his head in. My daughter was going to be highly disappointed when she found out. She had at least three posters of the guy in her bedroom.

It took about another five minutes to kill everything in the area. We did a good job of it too. Between those that we ran over and the ones we shot or beat to death, I would say we killed almost one hundred and fifty of the damn things. It is quite puzzling how the zeds congregate around some places or seem to travel in groups like schools of fish. I mean do why they gather together. Why aren’t they just wondering around doing their own thing? Unless the local college ever gets up and running again and offers a class in Zombie Psychology 101 I will never know.

Moore’s turned out to be a big disappointment. There wasn’t any ammo or guns left that we could find. We did take quite a bit of the weapons cleaning gear, holsters, magazine pouches and a number of speed loaders that would fit the revolvers we had.

Across the street, Alex and Chris went into a fabric shop. I am not quite sure I want to start a sweatshop and have the kids start making clothes, but Alex insisted we clear the place out. Evidently, Alex can sew and make clothes and shit and says despite the abundance of clothes to be scavenged there may come a time when we have to make our own. She had Ju come over to help with picking the place clean while I stood guard. I think she got every bolt of cloth, every needle, and spool of thread in the place. She also got two heavy-duty sewing machines as well.

The toy store was the next place we hit. We had to kill a few Sally Soccer moms and the worst part was the six kids we killed. I am glad Alex was outside when we did that. She really seems to like being around the kids back at the lodge and I am not sure she would have had the gumption to smash their little noggins in.

We grabbed a variety of toys and dolls for the kids and then the little boys in us came out. We grabbed basketballs, and two of the portable basketball goals that would need to be assembled, model cars and planes, rockets, rocket motors, and a few high-end RC cars and trucks. I think our big score was the high dollar air hockey table we got. We can grill some steaks, drink some beer and get a competition going. Alex just gave us one of those you have to be shitting me looks women can get when men are getting stuff they really don’t need. Oh well, the girls can piss off. They wanted us to hit the toy store so why shouldn’t we get a few things for ourselves, LOL.

We headed to our next stop on the list, a sheet metal shop that Dan had given us directions to. We must have killed most of the zombies in the area because we didn’t even see one on the way over to the sheet metal shop. Like I said earlier, it is really strange how these zombies seem to travel and when and where you see them.

We had to break in to the sheet metal shop through the glass front door. I had to put an old lady down that had been ripped to shreds. I felt a little ashamed of myself blowing away a five-foot tall granny. Yeah, I know she would have ripped my guts out for breakfast, but I still felt guilty. In the back work area, we all gave Ju a high five for one of his kills.

He picked up a piece of scrap metal and threw it at one of the zeds in the back. The metal hummed through the air end over end and hit the guy in the forehead splitting his head open and embedding the metal into his brain. Lucky bastard, I bet he couldn’t do it again in a million years. With a straight face he swore he wasn’t fucking around and that, he purposely killed the zed like that. We all know he was just screwing around but we will let him have his fantasy on this one because it was so cool how it went down.

After we secured the place, Ju got to work getting the forklift started. Once the forklift was running, we started loading up the metal. We also got more welding equipment and sheet metal tools. Ju was smiling during the entire process. I guess I can’t blame him, after looking at the plans he has drawn up on the computer for one of the eighteen-wheeler rigs. I think it is gonna make Buff look like a kiddies’ toy in comparison if he can pull it off.

It was getting close to three o’clock when we finished up. Our next stop was the diesel vehicle dealership. The zombie activity seemed to pick up the further into the downtown area we went. The front plow was really getting a good work out. I was going to have Ju help me check the bolts and welds when we got back.

I wasn’t all that excited about getting new diesel vans, trucks, or whatever it is this place sold. On the other hand, it would be nice to get parts and supplies. The closer we got to this place the more I felt uneasy. It appeared that cars had been moved out of the way and there were plenty of dead scattered about. Not just your average dead but undead corpses if that make any since. I radioed Ju and told him that we needed to stop and I wanted to check things out.
The four of us met in the center of the street as we scanned the area. I told them that it looked like people had been scavenging the area. Ju and Chris said they had the same feeling. Alex was excited about the possibility of actually finding more survivors. I told her that it might be good or bad it just depended on what type of people they were.

We decided to check out a clothing boutique that had four corpses stacked up just outside the door. They were not laying there haphazardly they had been placed. We eased over to the business, Alex standing with her back to the wall as she scanned for threats. I lead the way in as we entered the store.

There were no dead in the store. We did find four spots on the walls where blood and brains had splattered and sprayed the walls. Must have been where the four undead outside had their shit blown away. The store was almost completely empty of anything useful. It had been totally cleaned out. Not cleaned out as in people rioting and looting, it was methodical. We were definitely not alone in the area.

With the evidence that we were not alone gathered, we mounted back up and headed out. When we were about half a block from the dealership, we stopped and dismounted. Alex got on the top of Buff and went prone; she scanned the area with binos. I am really going to make sure everyone gets one of the bolt guns with a scope. Alex with binos would be a big help, but it would be really nice if she could provide long range, precision fire if it was needed. The rest of us moved forward, taking cover where we could as we moved forward.

When I was within a hundred yards, I slipped behind a dumpster and inspected the dealership. The place definitely looked like people had been in and out of it. There were several cars and vans that looked like they had been moved and parked in front of the showroom entrance. They were not covered in dirt or grime and the windows appeared as if they had been cleaned off unlike many of the other vehicles in the lot that were covered in dirt and bird shit. It also appeared that someone was starting to fortify the place.

We patiently waited searching for any movement. After thirty minutes of waiting, I radioed the order to move forward and for Alex to continue to cover us. The showroom doors were locked and we made our way around to the service area. The door there was also locked. Ju just gave me a smile, dropped his pack and pulled a pry bar out of it. He made short work of the door and we entered.

We discovered that there definitely had been a lot of activity in the building. We found a stockpile of food and ammo, a sleeping area with over a dozen sleeping bags in it. We agreed we would not take the other peoples supplies, but we most certainly wanted parts for the diesel engines and one of the panel vans out in the lot.

I am not really sure how I felt about doing what we were doing. On one hand, other survivors had holed up here and were making it and we had invaded their area while they were gone. I know they would be pissed; I would if someone came to the lodge and took some of our shit. On the other hand, they didn’t own everyone of these vehicles or the parts. We were not going to take it all and certainly not the vehicles that appeared to have been put in running order by them. We really should come back later and try to trade with them, but we decided to say fuck it and get the parts and a vehicle.

While Ju and I started stacking boxes of parts by a service by door we had opened, Chris had gone back into the showroom area and found the key board. Using the remote lock buttons on each he just kept pressing buttons until he saw the lights flash and the horn go off of one of the Mercedes panel vans he wanted.

Chris ran out, hopped into the van, and got it started up. I didn’t think it was going to crank at first but it did. He pulled up and then he and Ju started loading up the remaining parts. The front passenger tire was a bit low so I went back to the back where I had seen a portable air compressor.
As I was filling up the tire, Alex spoke out on the radio. She said we had company. She had counted five vehicles approximately a mile away and they appeared to be similar to those here at the dealership. The last box was being thrown in as she gave us the update.

Chris jumped into the driver seat and Ju and I hopped onto the back running board so we could jump off and make it to our vehicles quickly. As we hit the street I looked back to see that a blue Mercedes wagon had pulled ahead of the other vehicles. As we approached our vehicles, one of the passengers leaned out of the window and began to fire at us. Alex dropped the hammer down on them. I am not sure how many rounds she fired but it had to be the whole damn magazine, the front windshield sending out geysers of powdered glass with each bullet impact.

As Ju and I jumped off the back, I radioed Chris to start heading home. Ju was running for the dump truck as I spun and started to add my fire to Alex’s. All the other vehicles including the Mercedes had come to a stop by the dealership and at least fifteen to twenty people were scrambling for cover. I saw two women who seemed to be organizing the group and I sent them scuttling for cover as I poured some lead their way.

Alex was reloading and I screamed at her to get her ass off the roof and get Buff turned around. The volume of return fire had started to pick up and I could hear rounds snapping over my head and some ricocheting off of Buff’s armor. One thing I noticed about the opposition was that many of them seemed to have lever and bolt guns. Though they weren’t armed with assault rifles, I could tell they knew how to use them.

Alex told me to get my ass on board as she bounded up the steps and into Buff’s interior. As I backed to the door, I was able to drop two men as they rushed from one position to another. I am not sure if I killed them but I damn sure hit them.

Alex decided to say screw it when it came to making a three-point turn to get us out of the area. She smashed two cars out of the way, as the rig went up onto the sidewalk and tore out a chain link fence that surrounded a parking lot. I fell on my ass as she came off the sidewalk and back onto the street and punched the gas. I could hear rounds pinging off the armor as Alex steered one handed and screamed into the radio for Ju and Chris to haul ass.

Ahead I saw the van and dump truck take the first left and disappear from sight. Looking at the monitor connected to the rear camera I could see men scrambling into vehicles and one car taking off on a side street. Keying up my radio, I told Ju and Chris to be aware that they were trying to flank us.

Two miles down the road as we were weaving through disabled vehicles, debris, zombies at treacherous speeds Ju and Chris had just cleared the intersection ahead, and I saw a blur of the car that had taken off down the side street coming into the intersection. Alex screamed to hold on as she cut the wheel left sending us tearing right at the car. The last thing I saw before my face slammed into the dashboard was the passenger of the car looking up at us. His eyes were as big as saucers his mouth opened wide in a silent scream.

I didn’t even feel the impact of the crash. Alex later told me I had only been out for about a minute but it seemed like an eternity. I came to on the floorboard and looked up to see Alex with a grimace on her face jerking the wheel to the right and feeling our rig shudder from an impact.
Groggily I made my way to my feet. I gave my head a shake trying to clear it. Alex was screaming at me to open fire on the vehicle to our right. Her voice sounded like she was yelling in a bucket and I was hoping I wasn’t to fucked up as I fought to regain some level of clarity.

Looking into the side mirror, I could see a panel van similar to the one we had taken pulling up beside us. I had no idea where my VEPR had gone so I drew the gauge, dropped the door window, and prepared to fire. I was pretty lucky because just as I put my finger on the trigger and pulled the van pulling up even with us and the driver of the van was leveling a pistol out the window.

I don’t think at the speeds we were going he would have been able to put a round through the firing port, but you never know. I squeezed the trigger and the drivers head exploded painting the interior of the van red with blood. The van swerved out of control jumped the curb and crashed through a storefront, black smoke billowing out of the store almost immediately.

Checking the monitor for the rear camera again, I could see the other vehicles in the pursuit slow and come to a stop as we sped away. I wobbled my way to the medicine cabinet so I could get something for my pounding head and found my VEPR with my feet. I pitched forward and slammed my jaw against the deck. It didn’t knock me out but I sure as hell about bit my tongue off. I am not doing a lot of talking right now since I sound like Daffy Duck when I speak. The kids seem to get a hoot out of it though, especially after Ju put in a Looney Tunes DVD with Daffy Duck and let them watch it.

Alex has insisted I am now on the sick, lame, and lazy list. For those of you who do not have a Marine background that means I am on the sick call list unable to do any work due to a slight concussion.

Ju reported that Buff’s plow had taken quite a bit of damage and would have to be repaired and re-mounted. The armor has a shitload, which is not a fuck ton but still a lot, of dings and dents from bullet impacts. It has however held up quite well. The other two vehicles came out of the chase without a scratch.
I am pleased with the haul that we got, but not pleased with the results. We got everything we needed but now we are a known entity to an unfriendly group. I am sure they now look at us as raiders and I can understand that. Maybe when they discover we left the rigs they had parked up front, and all of their belongings alone they will know we were just after parts. Yeah, we are the bad guys on this one, but I will live with it.

On the home front, Dan managed to build walls in the ladies’ bedroom giving each of them their own private space. He was also able to complete the walls in Chris and his room. Sam and Sara removed the two spotlights that were mounted on the front and back porch. One was mounted in the gate tower the other mounted on the far right tower. They had just enough wire to make it work so more wiring will be necessary if we intend to add any more lights or solar panels (if we can find more).

I will be out of it for a bit and probably won’t make many entries unless I decide to write down how many different ways I can sit around on my ass doing nothing. Good night.

Well if you really want to find out about these folks and you havent already go to http://www.adriansundeaddiary.com/diary-entries.htm Chris has an awesome story going and it is a great read. This story and several others on the site are spin offs from his. Check out the fan fiction AUD Universe section and you can read the spin offs. John Aris McClure and The Clock RUns Down are two that are really good ones that are ongoing right now.

October 27, 2010

This is gonna be a short entry just to let you know what is going on. Well I have just left the infirmary and Alex has given me a clean bill of health. My concussion was a little worse than we first thought, but I am good to go now. I spent seven days lying around on my ass, and while I hate laying around doing nothing in a way, I guess it was good for me. I had no real stress, nothing to worry about since everyone else was taking care of business.

I did get to know the kids better. Despite what they have all been through, they seem to be coping well. I played many board games with them, which was very enjoyable and reminded me of when Emily Grace was a little one. I did get my ass handed to me playing Candy Land, LOL.

For the past three days, Alex has allowed me to get up and walk about. I had to be “supervised” to go check the traps and automatic fishing reels Sam has put back out. My “supervisors” for the most part were Bobby and Fei. They followed me around like little guard dogs, both armed with 10-22 rifles. Alex informed me it was for protection against any possible wandering zombies. I on the other hand believe Alex gave them orders to shoot me in the ass if I did anything to strenuous.

Yes, Fei and Bobby were armed and prepared to shoot zombies. According to Alex and Chris when the horde came and overran our area the two kids screamed and cried but zombies died because the two stayed in the fight. I know if times were normal and being here in the northeast child services would be all over our ass. Of course back home in Alabama many kids got their first .22 rifle at the age of five or six, I know I did.

We had a meeting about the other kids and firearms and all came to the same conclusion. All the children had to learn to handle at least a .22 rifles or pistol. If something happened to all the adults, the kids need to have skills to protect themselves. Other decisions were made about the children as well. No longer would their days be filled with running around playing, it was a new age.

Chris and Ju took turns teaching the children firearms safety and marksmanship. They were also given familiarization classes with all the firearms such as shotguns, ARs, AKs, and the bolt guns. They were too young to actually use these weapons but the knowledge may someday save their lives or the lives of another. However, Ryan, and Bobby both being nine could actually handle the AR 180s and ARs. They were not very accurate in the standing position, but prone, and using a barricade, they did a fair job out to seventy-five yards with them.

Alex gave the children basic first aid classes as well. In addition, all the adults were not only taught the basics but some more intermediate and advance life saving skills. It was more of a refresher for Ju, Chris, and me since we all had military first aid training.

Sam spent part of each day teaching everyone wilderness survival skills. This was actually a big hit with the kids. You should have seen little Paul and Renee when they both got rabbits in the traps that they had set. You would have thought Barney the dinosaur had walked into the room. Renee cried like a baby though when she had to learn to skin and gut her catch, but she got over it. Jessica and Sara were not too pleased when they had to learn to gut fish. Daily survival classes though helped everyone one in the confidence area knowing that if separated from the group and on their own, they could survive.

I haven’t been able to take part but early each morning everyone, including the kids, did calisthenics. After that, Ju would give a short class on basic kicks, throws, and punches. No one would turn into Bruce Lee but everyone would have basic fighting skills. This was followed by another short class on melee weapons. Something different each day, knives, staff, and blunt instruments such as bats and crow bars.

Classes started at around five thirty in the morning and ended around nine. As time goes on, we will phase out first aid classes to refreshers for everyone once a month. Marksmanship would be the same, we had a lot of ammo but we couldn’t use a lot of it even though marksmanship was important. Sam and Ju’s classes would continue daily barring anything interfering them. Therefore, once everyone was up on first aid and marksmanship the classes would drop down to about two or two and half hours. So by seven, seven thirty folks could eat breakfast and get busy doing what needs to be done.

Beside the added benefit of everyone learning new skills there was another benefit. With all the exercise and classes each person was receiving, I believe everyone’s mental health was improving. I have not written much about it, but each of us is having to deal with our own personal demons. Thoughts of dead or missing loved ones were a big factor in causing depression. Piling on top of those feelings was knowing nothing would ever be the same, the world as we knew it was gone. I believe the children will cope with it better in the long run than the adults. The adults would always have the memories of how things really were.

With all the parts and materials from the dealership, Ju was able to do some needed maintenance on all the diesel vehicles. He and Chris also armored up the new panel van. It isn’t armored up like Buff. Basically, some quarter inch sheets welded on the box, a very small wedge in front of the bumper to help shed zombies off, and another sheet on the side door. The only thing the armor would stop would be pistol and shotgun rounds.

The panel van is a 1997 Mercedes 814D charcoal grey in color. There is a sliding door on the driver side and doors on the back with no windows on the panel portion. On top is a rack taking up three quarters of the back section for extra storage. This thing is barely broken in; it only has one hundred and ten thousand miles. Ju thinks this will be an excellent vehicle to use for short scavenging runs, and to haul gear and supplies in whenever and where ever it is where are supposed to take the kids.

Chris, Sara, and Jessica used logs to build a three-foot tall retaining wall around the berm that now surrounds the cabins. Therefore, I guess the berm will not wash away into the trench system that surrounds the cabins. They also had the kids use the remaining rye grass to spread on the berm. I will have to admit even with the smaller trench that Chris dug and just a retaining wall and berm the cabin area is fairly secure. The berm is high enough to protect the cabins from gunfire.

I will also have to admit that everyone has done a great job fixing up and cleaning the cabins. Now they are even talking about building another wall and trench system to connect the lodge and cabin areas. I just want to scream sometimes but maybe my new friends know best. I think I will fight that decision until or if we get more people.

Well that about sums up the past ten days. Sorry I have not written in that long, but like I said, I have not been doing much. Well I am about to take Rommel on a foot patrol down the road a few miles and check a few things out. I feel like a caged lion and want to get out on the hunt.

Wonderful story. I always like the first part of these tales best. Once the groups get larger the problems start. I guess there is no escaping politics and personalities.

you will have to excuse any glaring mistakes. It has been a long work week and I was tired as hell when I wrote this.

November 1, 2010
Damn I am exhausted but I feel like I should write down everything that has gone on since Rommel and I took our little jaunt. Sam is mad as hell for me going off as I did. What can I say, I get the bug to stretch my legs and walk a few miles. I guess all those days of doing nothing had finally got to me. Of course, I will once again be sitting around doing nothing according to Alex. Damn woman is just a paramedic and she is acting as if she is my fucking doctor. Well I guess in the land of the dead she is about as close to a doctor as we have got.

I started out on the road just after sunrise on the 28th. Despite the argument Sam and I got into last night I think she understood that I just had to take the walk. Messing around and interacting with all those kids kept making me think about Emily Grace. I think she understands the burden I am under with these dreams about taking the kids somewhere safe, and being unable to ensure my own child is safe.

She of course made sense that it was completely insane for me to go by myself, on foot no less, out past the safety of the walls. Insane or not I needed to do it, and besides it felt like I had to for some strange reason. In the end, she saw that she was not going to change my mind and that I really did need to do this.
I had planned to take a small pack the VEPR, .45, and the mace but Sam would have none of that. So I pulled out my Gunslinger II (http://www.uscav.com/productinfo.aspx?p ... &TabID=548 this is like the one I personally own and love it) pack and got to loading it down. I put in twelve MRE main meals. By just taking the main meals out of the big MRE packs, you can get quite a bit of food into a much smaller space. I also added some trail mix and a few cans of fruit. Alex gave me a first aid kit from the infirmary. For rain gear I just put in a poncho and a poncho liner to keep the chill off, it was fall after all. I rolled up a wool blanket in the poncho and liner and attached it to the outer portion of the pack. This should be enough to keep me warm; I have used the same set up in the dead of winter. I also dug out quite a few odds and ins from all the camping gear we have and packed them.
I had nine AK magazines on the vest so Sam had me put two more pouches on the waist belt of the pack giving me a total of thirteen with one in the rifle. I had twelve magazines for my 1911 and two extra boxes of ammo for it. I put my Ruger MKII and a brick of ammo in the pack in case I decided to get some small game. I attached two of the seventy-five round drums to the pack as well. I was able to stuff in one box of number one shot for the twelve gauge on the back of the vest.
Throwing in my camelback, I had at least seventy pounds of gear. Hell it was not like I was planning to go five hundred miles but if it got Sam off my ass then I thought “so be it”. I had not humped a seventy-pound rucksack since I was in the Marines, but with all the exercising I had been doing, I just might be in better shape than I was back in the day.
Fall in the northeast is quite beautiful. The hardwood trees look like they are on fire in blazing colors of orange, yellow, and red. The temperature was in the mid sixties and was perfect weather for hitting the road on foot. It was damn near perfect and even the dead cooperated and were nowhere in sight.
Eleven miles later and not a zombie in sight, I was ready for a break. I really thought it was strange that I had not seen one undead. I had seen quite a few decaying corpses some old and a few new. On the newer ones, some had been shot in the head some had their heads bashed in. I had seen no real signs of scavenging in the homes or cars I passed, but obviously living folks had been in the area. They must have been fairly well supplied not to have hit the cars and houses.
I had checked one car that had several undead lying about that had their heads bashed in. You could clearly see a backpack and useful looking tools. Apparently, whoever killed these zombies with melee weapons clearly had no use for the gear in the car. I checked out the pack that contained some clothing, first aid kit, three mountain house dehydrated food packs, and a really nice Buck 120 sheath knife. The pack itself was of above average quality. Someone who was trying to survive would most certainly have searched it. Hell, I had plenty of stuff and I am checking it out. I took the knife, food and first aid kit and headed on wandering if I would come across these well-equipped survivors.

Several of the houses I checked were completely empty, no cars, no food, missing clothes. They must have bugged out before things in this area had gotten bad. I really could not understand why they would bug out since they all had operating wells and this was a unpopulated rural area.

It was nearing three o’clock when I spotted a log cabin home about 30 yards off the road set back in the trees. There was an old truck parked out front which didn’t quite look liked it belonged in front of the big cabin. My interest was raised a bit. Could there be something or someone interesting there? I figured what the hell I would check it out. I only had a couple of hours of good daylight left before the fall sun began to set and I needed a place to set up camp before dark so I headed up the drive.

Once off the road I moved into the trees clicking off the safety of the VEPR as I moved, Rommel at my side. Fifteen yards out, I started to circle the house looking for threats. There were no out buildings in the back. The back deck led to a boarded up window and back door. In fact, all the lower windows were boarded up.
Finally, back around the front side of the cabin I squatted behind a thicket taking cover. I pulled my binoculars out to really study the place. Yeah, I know I was only fifteen yards way but the binos could give me some up close details as I focused in on the front door and upstairs windows.

Nothing moved in the upstairs windows that I could see. One thing I had noticed on the south side of the roof was a set of solar panels, bingo. Resting my eyes for one last scan on the front door, I noticed spider webs from the doorframe to the doorknob. Taking the binos from my eyes, I realized for the first time there were a lot of leaves piled up on the front door, just as there had been on the back deck.

Chances were that no one was alive inside. Of course, that didn’t mean there wasn’t any undead inside either. Rommel and I moved slowly forward and the closer we got to the door Rommel started to growl. That told me real quick I had undead inside. Love out to my puppy!
Checking the front door I found it locked. I used my size eleven door opener and the door swung open. Rommel looked up at me expectantly waiting for me to make entry. I had other plans. This house had to be at least sixteen hundred feet per floor. That is a pretty big structure for one guy to search, even if he did have a pup like Rommel with him.
I signaled Rommel to back away with me. I backed us up to the old truck and waited for anything to shamble out. Several minutes into the wait I heard some glass break from inside. I knew something was in there so I decided maybe I could speed it up. I opened the truck door up and laid on the horn for a few seconds.
I was rewarded about thirty seconds later by a zed stumbling out the front door. Rommel did his little “I want to maul and kill” jig. I wasn’t ready for that yet. I allowed the zed to stumble and fall off the front porch as he made his way towards me.

The zed was an old man with long shaggy hair and beard, wearing a set of overalls. He went face first onto the sidewalk and I casually walked up to him and put a round into his head. Nothing like an easy kill, fuck the macho stuff. Rommel gave me a disappointed look and I gave him a scratch behind the ears, the house wasn’t clear yet. We waited another five minutes, nothing showed, and we made our way inside.

It was fairly dark inside. The curtains were drawn and with the boards on the windows outside little light made its way inside. I dropped my pack, slung the VEPR, drew my 1911, and took a flashlight out.

Rommel was still emitting a low growl so I knew we had one or more undead inside. The entire downstairs was devoid of any undead. What I did notice was that all the drawers in the rooms had been opened and ransacked. The same could be said for the kitchen cabinets. Food was stacked and packed in five medium sized boxes. There were two bolt rifles and several boxes of ammo lying on the couch. Apparently, the old guy was out scavenging the only thing I had left to do was see if he was alone.

As I made my way to the staircase, my shoulder bumped a light switch and the stairwell light flashed on. Needless to say and I will admit I pumped a round right up the stairs, it suddenly dawned on me the freaking solar panels are working. In a world where everything seems to be broke or destroyed, it is, kind of hard to expect anything to work, and it usually is a pleasant surprise if it is.

Upstairs all three bedroom doors and a bathroom door were closed. Before opening any of them, I walked Rommel by each one to see his reaction. At the second door, Rommel’s hair stood a little higher on end and his growl deepened. That narrowed the it down a bit for me so I decided to check the other rooms first.

Three of the rooms I checked were bedrooms. Like the rooms downstairs, the drawers to the dressers and desks were opened. Clothing, boots, and other items were stacked on each bed. Among the items on the bed of the master bedroom was a pistol I had really wanted to buy but never purchased. It was a S&W model 325 .45 ACP with tactical light rail. The 325 was touted in many gun magazines as the possible re-birth of the revolver in a semi-auto world. It came with a tactical rail for a light below the barrel, and another could be added to the top strap above the cylinder to add optics. It fed the .45 ACP rounds via six round moon clips. It was made in the Smith and Wesson Custom Shop and was one hell of a gun.

This puppy was going to be mine. It would be a great addition to my 1911 since it would give me a common pistol caliber to focus on. Plus I just knew Ju and Chris would be full of envy and lust for it, and it would be all mine, LOL.

After sticking, the 325 in my waistband I made my way to the last door. I put my ear to the door and listened. Hearing nothing, I clinched my fist and banged on the door. Seconds later, something slammed against the door. I immediately wrenched the door open shoving it forward sending not one, but two stumbling backwards. One was a shaggy haired bastard who looked like a younger version of the old man downstairs, but missing an eye and nose. The woman was dressed in designer type outdoors clothes and was probably the former lady of the house.

The quarters were too tight to send Rommel or even using the mace was out of the question. To me it looked like it was time for a little gun play. The two zeds were not knocked to the ground and were charging back at me. The sons of bitches were faster than any I had ever seen before. I didn’t have time to aim and I started firing from the hip. Not even thinking as the first round left the barrel of my 1911, I drew the 325 from my waistband at the same time pulling the trigger as it came to waist level.

I raised both pistols firing as I backed away into the large hall area. None of my rounds were aimed and I could see the bullets tearing into the flesh of both zombies geysers of congealed blood erupting from their backs as the bullets exited their rotting corpses. Shell casings rained to the floor with each pull of the trigger. The first zed was almost on top of me as I tripped up and began falling backwards, the slide locking back on the 1911, and the hammer falling on an empty chamber of the 325.

I let the pistols fall from my hands as I reached back for the twelve gauge halfway to the floor. Rommel lashed out missing the first zed but hitting the woman causing her to trip over his body falling forward to the floor. The gauge cleared the scabbard and I brought it over my shoulder as my shoulders hit the floor. The zed dove forward lunging for my face and I was able to squeeze the trigger just as the barrel came even with his face. The 00 buck rounds disintegrating his head, blood and gore sprayed across my face and the ceiling above us as his body fell on top of me.

I had already started to roll as his body landed on me and I was able to scramble out from underneath him and roll to my feet. I swung the barrel of the shotgun down towards the woman. I couldn’t pull the trigger because she and Rommel were tangled up, both attempting to untangle themselves and rise.
I flipped the shotgun around grasping the hot smoking barrel in both hands and charged forward raising the shotgun over my head. Just as she raised her head, her mouth gaping open ready to rend my flesh, I brought the shotgun down, the pistol grip smashing into the top of her head. The blow rocked her head down towards the floor. I followed up by punting her face like a fucking football causing her to flip off of a struggling Rommel.

Rommel pulled away from her as she rolled away. I followed the momentum of my swing and stomped by foot down onto her chest as she came to rest on her back. Flipping the shotgun back around I rammed the shotgun down into her mouth shattering her teeth as the barrel pushed to the back of her mouth. I pulled the trigger blowing out the back of her head blood and brains mushrooming out in a dark pool on the wood floor under her head.

I will have to say theat was the closest I think I have come in quite some time almost becoming zombie meat. I walked weak kneed back down the stairs to the kitchen and sat down at the table. I leaned my head back closing my eyes taking deep breaths. Once composed I pulled the canteen from my side I tilted my head back and poured the water over my face wiping the blood from my face. I knew I had not gotten it all and I took a cloth placemat from the table dousing it in water and finished scrubbing my face clean.

Once I composed myself, I did a more detailed inspection of the residence. The only thing of real interest to me that I had not seen on my first run through was a small canvas bag holding twenty loaded moon clips for the 325. I took a bit of time to consolidate everything into the living room that I thought would be valuable to our group. I located a closet containing ten deep cycle batteries for the solar power system.

I went back outside and tried to contact the lodge. Sam responded to my call and she was loud and clear. She said I was coming in broken and wanted me to repeat what I had said. I needed to get to higher ground so I went back inside and made my way to one of the bedrooms. Opening the window, I climbed out on the roof.

Sam advised she could read me but the transmission had a lot of static. I told them about the cabin and that I would mark it so when I returned we could come round up the supplies. I evaded the truth a bit when Sam asked if things had been dangerous. I really didn’t want her worrying about me and felt the less I told her about the close call the better.

I dragged the bodies of the undead outside and about twenty yards off in the woods. Their stink still permeated the house but there was no sense in leaving them inside to really stink it up while they fell further into decay. The bodies removed I stripped down and grabbed a few bottles of water from the counter top and washed the dirt and sweat of the day away. I cooked some chow, ate up, pulled out the poncho liner, hopped in the recliner, and crashed as the sun went down. I fell asleep almost immediately my body fatigued from the huge adrenaline dump I had received during my struggle.

The next morning I actually woke after sunrise, around six thirty am. I had not slept eleven hours since before June 23rd. That little near death experience must have taken more out of me than I thought. I was happy for though since I felt very refreshed. I fixed a bag of dehydrated eggs and took a couple of family size soup cans from one of the cardboard boxes for Rommel.

We took our breakfast upstairs to one of the bedrooms that overlooked the front yard and road. I had opened the upstairs windows before cooking breakfast to air out the house. Sitting in a chair looking out, I was contemplating about possibly using this home as a backup location if we had to bug out of the lodge. We could come out here and Chris could happily dig a trench around it. There were plenty of tall trees that we could use to make a wall. No, not walls like at the lodge just a basic seven or eight foot tall wall just behind the trench. The house had a well, and solar power it would be an ideal place to fall back to.
As I slowly finished my meal pondering this idea I watched three zeds come into view as they slowly shuffle down the road. As I crumpled up the foil package that had contained my breakfast, I heard the sound of a motor. I grabbed my rifle and shouldered it scanning the road. I was torn whether or not I actually wanted to see anyone. Would these people stop at the house? Would they be like those who we had killed rescuing the kids?

I could hear the vehicle slowing before I could see it. The three zeds turned towards the sound of the motor and started heading towards the oncoming vehicle. Then I saw the vehicle. It had slowed to about twenty miles per hour. It was an older model Dodge 4x4. It had large mud tires, a suspension lift and a large homemade bumper/brush guard. I thought the driver would just ease over in front of the zeds and run them down using the huge bumper to kill them.
Instead, the driver eased away from the zeds as he continued forward. It was then I noticed he had his arm hanging out the window with a pistol in hand. In the back of the bed two men stood, one with a semi-auto rifle, the other with a shotgun. As they drew even with the three zeds, they opened up with their weapons. This was not accurate fire. These people were just having fun. All three emptied their weapons into the three zeds. Hell one of the zombies brutally dismembered from the rounds that hit him was still alive trying to move towards the men by wiggling his torso.

The truck stopped and the man with the shotgun combat loaded his weapon jumped down from the bed and at point blank range blew the zeds head off. When he turned the other man in the back let out some kind of victory yell and tossed the man some type of drink can. I heard a bunch of “hell yeahs” and as the shotgun man climbed into the bed of the truck, he gave the other a high five and they did some crazy ass dance. Once their little dance was over the driver floored the gas and they sped away. Those fellas were nuttier than a squirrel’s turd.

I watched the truck speed off into the distance it turned north onto a county road and disappeared. That had been pretty damn disturbing in my mind. Not that the three had killed the zeds, but how much ammo they wasted doing it. These guys were either really stupid and didn’t realize how hard it would be to find ammo in the near future or they had plenty of it to just blow about fifty rounds to kill three zeds.

If these three were bad guys this could mean trouble for us if they came into our area, not so much if they attacked the lodge, but if we were out scavenging. If they were part of a larger group it could mean trouble for us at the lodge if they had plenty of ammo heavy weapons and scoped rifles. I decided I would scout north and see if I could locate their base of operations. If I remembered my map correctly eight miles down that road lead to another county road that circled ten miles back towards the lodge.

I pulled my handheld radio off my belt, climbed out of the window onto the roof, and called the lodge. I could hear the lodge transmission loud and clear but Chris advised I still had a lot of static. He advised everyone was outside doing odd jobs and everything was going well. I advised him about what I saw and what my plans were and told him if my radio could transmit the distance I would call later in the day and give them a sitrep.

Before leaving I found a half sheet of three quarter inch plywood and re-secured the front door. I figured there was no sense in tempting fate allowing zeds to make their way in the house and eating our ass if we come back. In addition, if the door had been forced by the living we would know folks had been inside or still inside.

Shouldering my ruck Rommel and I headed out. Today the zed presence was a bit constant. Luckily for me the ones we ran into were in pairs or individuals. Three miles out I decided to take a break. I headed up into the woods to conceal myself from unwanted attention or the undead. As I sipped some water I noticed a pair of undead walking south and it got me wondering where all these damn things were coming from.

I pulled out my map and found my approximate location. That is when I noticed for the first time there was a small town of four hundred or so about six miles ahead. Maybe that is where these where coming from.

There was only one way to find out. I was going to have to go one-mile pass the road that would lead me back to the area of the lodge. I weighed the pros and cons and the pros one. It was quite possible if the town had not survived the undead the chances of it being totally scavenged of goods would be slim do to its size and how remote it was.

Finished with my break I headed back to the road and towards the small town. I was about three quarters of a mile past the county road turn off that headed towards the lodge when I heard several gunshots. I made my way off the road and up a small hill.

Once I approached the crest of the hill I dropped my pack and crawled forward on my stomach. Two hundred yards away I could make out a stone building with a tile roof. I could just barely make out several men in the parking lot due. The building appeared to be of newer construction, a high-end professional building or a medical office is what I was guessing. I could not make out all the details due to the trees. The men were firing quite a few rounds due to their demeanor I did not think they were in a fight for their lives. One of the men sat on the hood of a truck firing a rifle.

I backed out of my position down the hill. I grabbed my ruck and circled around to the east for a better vantage point. It took me another twenty minutes to find an adequate position on a hill that had a higher elevation. Once in my new position I was able to clearly see the parking lot area around the building.
The shooting had stopped some ten minutes earlier but it appeared that most of the men were still in the parking lot. I pulled my binos from the pack to better study the men below. There were fourteen armed men below. All were dressed in jeans, or work pants with heavy work type shirts in varying colors. All the men were armed. Long arms ranged from pump shotguns to semi-auto rifles. It appeared all had one or more handguns on their hip.

I saw no fortifications around the area. These people were just way too relaxed in my opinion. To top it off they were drinking beer and passing whiskey bottles back and forth. I knew they had not cleared the town of zombies because I could see small groups walking towards the sound of the men. Occasionally one or two would appear, multiple men would gun them down, and then they would continue with their drinking laughing and joking.

An hour or so later one of the men drunkenly staggered towards then building and stopped some twenty feet from the doors, screamed something and threw an empty against the wall. A short time later a slender teenage black female came out holding two plates what appeared to be sandwiches. The drunken man snatched one from the plate. She was followed shortly after three more kids also holding plates.

The children weaved in and out of the men handing out the sandwiches. Once the plates were emptied the children hurriedly made their way back to the building. Before the young black girl could get through the crowd one of the men lashed out with a vicious kick striking her in the lower back sending her sprawling to the asphalt. She quickly scrambled to her feet and ran for the building, the men laughing as she passed among them.

Now I will have to admit I did snatch up my rifle. I almost started firing on the group and in hindsight, I wish I had. I held my fire though and new why I had such a strong desire to leave the lodge. I had not had a dream but I knew I was here to get those kids.

I remained in position for the rest of the day observing. Shortly after the children went inside, I observed a tall lanky man start giving instructions. Once he was finished he and three other men made their way inside the building. The rest of the men paired up, got into vehicles, and began to leave.

I lost sight of most of them but from time to time throughout the rest of the day, I would hear gunfire or see one of their vehicles running down the dead on a distant street. There was a gas station near the center of town, I could hear a generator being started up each time a vehicle pulled in, and the occupants got out. It was obvious they were powering up the pumps and fueling the vehicles.

The group of men met back at the building as night fell. A generator was started up and the lights came on. An hour or so later the men piled back out of the building to their vehicles, and disappeared into the darkness of the town.

Within an hour or so, I heard several generators start up in the distance. I could see two houses light up in the distance. From what I could recollect of my earlier observation of the small village, these houses were just off the town square. All I can say is these people seem overly confident they will not be overrun by the dead. It is quite possible they have eliminated a large majority of the undead in this town. However, it was sure stupidity to tempt fate the way they were. All I had to do was think back to the hoard Sam and I fought, or the hoard that surrounded Ms. Carpenter’s home.

I rolled out my sleeping kit, pulled out an MRE main meal for myself, and opened a can of stew for Rommel and we ate a cold supper while I pondered the situation. I kept asking myself several questions. Should I go after the kids alone? Would it be better to call back to the lodge for support, meet up with my friends, and take on these people? Should I hump back to the lodge and just forget it? After all, you can’t save everyone. After I ate, I rolled up in my blankets, Rommel nestled in beside me, and I slept.

I was awakened the next morning by the sounds of engines. Rolling up into a sitting position, I grabbed my binos and scanned the area below. The little village seemed to be a hive of activity, and not the living kind. There had to be at least a hundred zombies in and around the town square.

As I glassed the zombies in the town square, multiple gunshots caught my attention to the west. Scanning left, I observed two trucks with several men in the back of each firing rifles and shotguns into a group of zeds on a side street. The trucks plowed into the group of zombies crushing some, and knocking others to the side.

My attention was drawn eastward as gunfire from that area of the village cracked in the air. Two more trucks with men in the back were doing the same as the other two. One of the men of the lead truck suddenly flew out of the bed of the truck as the rear end of the truck was pitched in the air as it crushed a zombie. The man was immediately swarmed by several zombies. The second truck ended his misery as it bowled into the group crushing the man and zombies who had began to feast on his body, his screaming suddenly ending as the front tire crushed his head.

A group of about twenty zombies began making its way towards the building I had under observation. When they were within about a half a block, a hatch on the roof opened up and three men with scoped rifles climbed out. All three were armed with scoped rifles and immediately began to fire with deadly precision. The group was wiped out as the last one got within twenty yards of the building.

I watched for nearly four more hours as the men cleared the undead from the streets. I was truly amazed at the amount of ammunition these people were just wantonly wasting. There seemed to be no plan of attack, except to ride around and shoot zombies with overwhelming firepower, and run them over. I knew where they were getting the fuel for the vehicles, but where the hell did they get so much ammo. The only ones who seemed to wisely use their weapons were the three who fired from the roof of the building, taking careful well-aimed headshots.

By noon, the zed population seemed to be all but weeded out. The trucks had split off individually about two hours earlier each taking a sector of the once sleepy little town and sweeping it clean of most all the zombies. Then they all seemed to head for the building at the same time.

When they arrived, the three men and the lanky leader greeted them in the parking lot. As the men dismounted from the trucks, two of the kids came out, each pulling a large ice chest behind them. The men circled around the ice chests and each began pulling out small wrapped packages of food and beer.
As the men ate, the two kids ran back inside and returned with the other two kids who were pulling a small cart with several different sized small wooden crates, and what appeared to be ammo cans. The cart was pulled up beside the long-limbed fellow slapped one of the kids and pointed back to the building. All four kids clambered back to the building and disappeared inside.

Two of the three of what I was thinking as bodyguards for the tall guy began to open the crates and ammo cans. As each man finished his meal, he would walk forward and was handed what was obviously ammo as each man began to reload magazines or weapons and stuff shells in his pockets. This seemed to be a pretty weird set up.

Instead of possibly splitting up the ammo among all three or four occupied buildings of the group, the men had to rely on lanky ass to supply them with ammunition. They also seemed to eat there, but surely, they had food at the homes they were staying in and were not relying totally on this guy for their meals. My take was that this guy probably had a powerful personality and controlled this group, but kept his distance from them and sent them out to do the dangerous work.

I don’t know where the kids fit into this whole scheme. I knew the black girl didn’t belong to any of the men, since I had seen no black men. Now the three white children were a different story. Did they belong to any of the men? Surely, no father would allow his child to be treated the way they had been. Of course, you never knew. Some folks do stupid shit with their kids when put under extreme stress.

I decided those kids had to be gotten out of their as soon as possible. There was a city of about twelve thousand or so thirty or so miles to the northwest of this place. Eventually many of those zombies that surely infested that city would make their way here and over run these idiots and kill the kids to boot.
I made the decision to call the lodge. I would have Sam, Ju, Chris, and Alex meet me a mile back at the intersection and we would come up with a plan to free the children. Our best bet would be to make entry into the building and hopefully sneak the children out without being detected. That was a lot to hope for. More than likely it would end in bloodshed, but as long as we could get the kids out, kill the four men inside if necessary, and get back to the lodge it would be worth it.

While I radioed the lodge, I continued to watch the men through the binos. I had to transmit several times before Sam answered my call. I began to explain to her the situation when I noticed the leader below raise his hand a wave as if to signal for silence and at the same time pull something from his belt.
When I told her, what I was observing the man and several others began scanning the hillsides. Well that was a big “Oh shit!” It suddenly dawned on me about the trucks all heading back to the building as if in on queue. Fucking radios! They must have FRS radios with similar frequencies to the ones we are using or ones just like them. Future readers if you still have access to FRS radios in the future remember one thing; make sure your comms are secure. The man began to shout orders and point in different directions, one of those being mine.

I told Sam we were compromised and I was bugging out and would be heading west to come back home. I hope they fell for the misdirection I threw out to Sam, and I know she was smart enough to get it. I checked the battery power level on my radio. I still had half a charge and I hoped it would be enough to last this ordeal.

I set it to scan hoping I would be lucky enough to listen in on their transmissions. Luck was with me, but not for long. I caught the voice of what I believed was the leader say something along the lines of you have your orders now shut the fuck up and stay off the radio. If we can hear them, they can hear us.
I decided to shut down the radio for now and save the battery in case I needed to call for an extraction if I couldn’t pull my ass out of the fire. I stowed my sleeping roll, shouldered my pack, and backed off the hillside. I moved deeper into the woods hoping I would not be followed.

Unfortunately, my luck didn’t hold long. I had moved further east and higher up into the hills and had just crossed a dirt logging road when I heard a truck coming from around the bend in the road. I was already into some of the thicker growth of the forest and took a knee behind a tree with several large evergreen type bushes around it. I slid my pack off of my shoulders and shoved it under one of them. The pack was coyote tan in color and might stand out. I felt my only hope was my MultiCam and natural camouflage. I wrapped my shemagh around my head and quickly cut small pieces of evergreen limbs from the bush in front of me putting them into the loops of my tactical vest. I cut a few larger ones to cover my back and reached over my shoulders to slide the branches into the loops located there.

The fucking truck stopped not thirty yards away from me. Two men got out of the cab and two jumped out of the bed. They split up in pairs, two heading away from me and two coming in my general direction. I eased myself as far as I could into the bush making little noise as possible. Rommel climbed in beside and I gently stroked his neck to help calm him. He was trembling. Not from fear but he could sense possible violence and tension and was ready to do battle. Now would not be the time for him to go hog-wild.

The two men approaching me were no woodsmen. They sounded like a herd of elephants. When they talked, despite their hushed voices, I could still hear them clearly. The two men decided to split further apart to cover more ground. They moved slowly but eventually one of them came into view about seventy feet away, his back to me as he moved ahead. It looked like he was carrying an AK or SKS.

I lost sight of him as he moved out of my vision. I never moved, I just watched with my eyes and listened. One thing I was taught in the Marine Corps was that when discovery was imminent you freeze. I remember my Sergeant at the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton telling us that if you froze, often times even if the enemy did see you he may disregard you if you stay motionless. His eyes tell him there is a person there, but his brain will often second-guess the eyes if you are well camouflaged. If you want to be a bush, be a bush and don’t move. Don’t stare at the enemy even humans have a sixth sense and kill feel a killer watching.

I heard branches snapping and leafs rustling coming from behind me. So I became a bush. I didn’t move hell I barely breathed. The man passed within three feet of me, stopped, and yelled to his friend wanting to know how far up they were going. I slowly unsheathed my knife just in case.
His friend glanced back over his shoulder and told him to the top like Bobby had said to and he continued up. I could see the man reach into his front pocket for something, and he brought both hands to his face. I heard the sound of a lighter flicking. The man inhaled and then exhaled and a cloud of blue white smoke surrounded his head.

As he reached towards his jacket pocket to put his lighter away, he dropped, as luck would have it dropped right by Rommel’s foot. He let out what the fuck as he leaned to pick up the lighter. He was staring at Rommel’s foot. I didn’t hesitate, as I reached up with my left hand I grabbed him by the hair and pulled his face towards mine. We looked eye to eye, as I rammed the knife up under his chin. The knife entered his brain and I watched the life leave his eyes and smelled his last rancid breath as it left his body.

I jerked the knife from his head the momentum sending him forward and onto my shoulder. I looked up towards the crest of the hill I could see his partner was just topping the rise. As quickly as I could I drug him into the bushes. Once his body was concealed, I made my way to the opposite side.
I had just made it to the other side when I heard the other man calling out to the man, Toby. Well Toby wouldn’t be responding anytime soon. The man made his way down the hill calling to Toby. As he came farther down the hill, he became more and more tense. I could just make him out through the leaves. He shouldered the SKS and began scanning the area.

He came closer and closer to my position. As he stepped around the bushes I was behind, he panned right away from me. I didn’t hesitate and lunged up and forward and jammed the knife into base of his skull. Twisting the knife and scrambling his brains as I jerked the knife out. Blood spewed from the hole in his head as the man’s knees buckled and he collapsed to the ground.

The second man now dead I had two more to deal with. I searched their bodies for radios and found none. I really hated to leave the weapons behind but this wasn’t a scavenging trip. I did take three of Toby’s AK magazines though. He had four more but I couldn’t fit them into the dump pouch.

I quickly made my way back down towards the area of the truck. Remaining in the tree line, I concealed myself and waited for the other two. Fifteen minutes later the two other men came up from the opposite side of the road. About the same time, a zed came around the bend in the road.

The men noticed and they actually argued about which one would kill it. They flipped a coin and the winner stepped forward raising his rifle. The man took his time and I thought this time at least one of them would actually shoot it in the head. Personally, I would have saved the bullet and used a melee weapon.
Well, instead of a head shot he shot it in the knee. The high caliber round blew the rotting leg off just below the knee pitching the zed face forward onto the road. This brought a round of laughter from the two. As the zed pushed his body up the man shot him in the bicep, shattering the bone and almost disconnecting the arm from the body.

As its face slammed into the ground for a second time, the man finally put a round in the damn things head painting the dirt road red. Then I heard the sound of a radio coming from the truck. One of the men opened the driver’s side and I heard him tell whoever it was they hadn’t made contact but were killing a zombie.

As soon as the man who answered the radio, he came leaned over on the hood of the truck and said something to the second man. The second man turned towards me and screamed out “Toby and Chris where the fuck are you!” After he got no response, he slung his rifle and started heading towards my location.
I decided right then would be the prime opportunity to take out both men. I decided to take out the man standing behind the engine block of the truck. He didn’t have his rifle out but if I killed the man walking, towards me, first he could take cover and he could be tough to kill. Hell he could possibly take me out.

I raised the VEPR and snapped off a shot. I was unsure where exactly I hit the guy but the round definitely hit him. His knees must have buckled because it was as if his full weight brought him down slamming his head into the hood of the truck before he disappeared behind it.

The shot totally startled the second man. He began to back pedal as he fumbled to un-sling his rifle. I came to my feet turning my sights towards him. I guess Rommel got tired of waiting to play and like a blur he shot out of the tree line and slammed into the man at full speed.

Unlike when he attacked zombies, Rommel latched onto the man’s bicep bringing him to the ground. This unquestionably was a game changer. I started out wanting to rescue the kids, that little plan changed to escape and evasion. Now I have a POW. What the fuck Rommel, who died and made you Field Marshal?
The first time I called Rommel off the bite but he kept rending and tearing at the man’s arm. I had to give him the post command three more times before he came back to my side. I guess my pup had a lot of pent up frustration never getting to bite into zombie. I kind of felt sorry for the piece of shit rolling on the ground in pain, but then again he was among the group using some kids as slaves.

I walked up the man and stuck the barrel of my rifle to his head. The VEPR AK 47 must have some type of healing qualities along with its deadly attributes because old home slice froze in place and he quit screaming. I told him unless he wanted to talk to my dog again he should answer my questions and if I thought he was not telling the truth he would have to talk to Rommel. He gave me a really docile okay, and vigorously shook his head in the affirmative.
He was a hell of a talker. I found out there were thirteen men since Aaron died yesterday. The four kids were kept as servants for the boss and were the last known survivors of the town. When asked how he knew they were the last four survivors he flat out told me because those that the zombies didn’t kill him and his friends did. He then went on to babble about how he was only following orders. His boss Hugh said America was dead and the little town was going to be the start of a new country and he was the new President.

He told me which streets the men lived on and how many in each house. The best info he gave me was that there were only four men total at the office building and that was where Hugh kept a lot of food and tons of ammo. He said they had found a sporting goods eighteen-wheeler loaded down with guns, ammo, and hunting supplies. They had also been able to hit a Wal-Mart early on when the outbreak had first started and had tons of food. He then told me where each man slept and where the children were kept.

That explained why they really didn’t care how much ammo they wasted. All I could do was stand there and ponder about how much good all that food and ammo could do for those I was trying to survive with. The thought brought a smile to my face.

The next thought I had was that the piece of shit lying before really didn’t deserve to live. I pulled the trigger and blew his brains out. Strangely, I heard a second shot followed by a searing pain tearing through my right thigh. I spun to my left raising my rifle as I turned and saw the man that I thought I had killed laying on the ground beside the truck trying to aim his pistol at me again. I screamed in agony as I put weight on my right leg and went to the ground. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to keep my rifle shouldered and I started squeezing the trigger.

Not only did I shoot the son of a bitch eight times I regrettably shot the shit out of the truck blowing out both back tires, hitting one of the rims twice and put several rounds into the fucking gas tank. Fortunately, for Rommel and me the truck didn’t go Hollywood and blow up.
I managed to sit upright and tear open my pants leg to take a look at the wound. I was in luck, if you could call being shot lucky. The bullet had struck the meaty outside portion on the back of my thigh and exited through the front. I opened up the first aid kit on my belt, pulled out two compression bandages, and applied them.

I heard the radio squawking and struggled to my feet using my rifle to help me up. I hobbled my ass over to the cab, opened the door, and grabbed the radio. The voice on the other end was asking about possible contact. I just picked up the radio and told them no, just more zombies. I got a 10-4, and keep looking.
The next challenge was to make it back to my pack. I had a larger first aid kit attached to it that had some prescription painkillers in it. It was a pain in the ass to make it back but I did. Once at my pack I popped a couple of Lortab 750 mg pills, and I laid down and closed my eyes.

I woke up to find I had slept into the night. That kind of shit now days will get your ass eaten in a heartbeat. I probably could have slept longer but I woke up because of another damn dream. I love to see my old man and all but, it still creeps me out knowing he is dead but still communicating with me.
Hell I really don’t even know if it counts as a dream it was so short. He just told me to wake the hell up and get the kids. Dad said by morning they would be dead, there is a hoard of zombies coming.

I got another pain pill and chased it down with water from my canteen emptying it. Damn I had not realized how thirsty I was. I took a long drink from the Camelback and quenched my thirst. I struggled to my feet, pulled on my ruck and headed for the office building.

I am not sure how long it took me to make it to town, but I was drenched in sweat and my Camelback was empty. I will have to admit that I was scared shitless the entire time. The damn zeds were so quite you just never knew when one would walk up on you. Rommel saved my ass twice on that walk. Each time a zed had walked up behind me, Rommel had taken them down, and I was able to split their melons quietly with my mace.

Once at the office building I took a knee behind a pickup in the parking lot and downed my ruck. I pulled a pen lit from one of my pouches and then checked the cab of the truck. The keys hung in the ignition. These are in some serious need of training and discipline, and it looked like Hugh wasn’t giving them any.
I pulled the keys from the ignition and pocketed them. While I picked up my rucksack and quietly placed it in the bed of the truck I ordered Rommel to stay. I thought about taking him with me but he wasn’t going to do me any good inside. If anything, taking him inside would just get him killed against heavily armed me, even if we did have the element of surprise.

I made my way stealthily to the front doors, which according to my former hostage was always unlocked. Sure enough they were. The foyer was and hallways were lit by several kerosene type lanterns. Two of the men slept in offices just off of the foyer in side-by-side rooms. I would go there first and take care of them. The third henchman was down the opposite end of the hall and Hugh’s room was around the corner from their in a large plush office. Once I took care of the first two I would then head to the opposite end and take care of the other two men.

The door to the first room was slightly ajar and I could hear snoring from within. I drew my knife and pushed the door open. I could barely make out a sleeping form on the bed. As I drew closer, I could see the man was facing toward me. I silently made my way to the bedside taking a knee and drew my knife back. He must have sensed me because his eyes shot open. Before he could utter a word or alert the others, I thrust my knife into his left eye and scuttled his brain.

I wiped my blade off on his sheets and sheathed the knife. As I stood and turned, my rifle hit something made of glass and it shattered. I was really pissed at this point. There I was trying to save innocent children and Mr. Murphy wanted to play fuck, fuck games.

He fucked with me some more when I heard the door next-door opening. Cursing to myself I hurriedly made my way to the door my VEPR at the ready. As I reached the door, I used the doorframe as a barricade and swung my rifle towards the possible threat coming my way.

I don’t know why I wrote possible threat. Hell Murphy had already fucked me over and he was doing it again. One of the henchmen, a heavily muscled man was walking towards me with a side-by-side double barrel sawed off shotgun at the hip with it pointed in my direction. I didn’t have time to challenge him or order him to put the weapon down so I fired.

Unfortunately, for me he had the same idea and fired right back. I managed to get off two shots before I felt two 00-buck pellets rip through my shirtsleeve and graze my right bicep and shoulder. I will have to give the big boy one thing, he was tough. Though I had hit him twice and sat him on his ace, he was still in the fight. He fired a second round blowing the doorframe apart where my head had just been right before I ducked back in the room.

Just as I was about to step, back in the doorway and put him down for good rounds started coming through the wall. Sheet rock dust started to turn my hair white as the bullets tore through the walls. I guess this guy didn’t believe in being under gunned and had a pistol on him from the sounds of the gunfire.
Well I had a bit more firepower and I responded in kind sending my rounds right back at his ass as I fired through the wall as I headed towards the door and stepping out into the hall. Once in the hall the fucker was toast. I had hit him three more times with my return fire and put two more in him to take him out for good.

Everyone Murphy likes to fuck with must be on vacation because I started receiving fire from the third henchman who had come out of his room to investigate. Bullets whipped by my head as I charged towards him. I dove into a small alcove as his return fire increased and the VEPR ran dry.
I rolled up into a seated position, drew my .45, hung it out in the hall, and dumped eight rounds in his general direction just trying to drive him back in his room so I could reload. I heard a yelp and the firing stopped. I quickly reloaded the pistol holstered and reloaded the VEPR and stood.

I swung my rifle and head around the edge of the wall exposing as little of myself as possible and tried to locate the man who was no longer in sight. Just as I stepped out to advance, I had to jump back into the alcove to avoid about ten rounds that the bastard fired at me as he came out of his room.
I didn’t have much time left so I thought to hell with it and came out shooting. As I advanced and fired, I could see a small spot of blood near his left shoulder. I guess I got lucky and Murphy decided to fuck with him a bit allowing me to at least hit him one time from my blind fire.

When I charged forward gun blazing, he decided to do the same. We charged one another with our rifles belching fire and lead. One of us was going to die of that there was no doubt. Well apparently, you know how that turned out because I am writing this journal entry. My last four rounds connected with his chest ripping his chest to shreds when we were no more than fifteen feet apart.

Holding my VEPR with the left hand, I drew my pistol as I walked up on him and put a round in his brain. I was going to make sure this one was dead because I really didn’t want to get shot from behind again. I was about to holster when Hugh decided he wanted to come out and play and came around the corner of the hallway firing an M4 with a 100 round Beta mag attached to it.

Not good! I dove left towards and office door to avoid joining the dick head dead at my feet. Either the bullet wounds had got my aim off a bit or the pain pills. I really wasn’t sure which, and I guess it really doesn’t matter because I missed the door and dove straight through the large glass floor to ceiling glass wall. Luckily, it wasn’t shatter proof or I would have been bounced on my ass and gotten a little bit of 5.56x45mm for some early breakfast.

I scrambled to my feet trying to shake off the pain and find some cover as Hugh poured gunfire towards the office. The left side of my cheek had been flayed open by the glass but I really didn’t have time to worry about that and I dove over a large wooden desk in what I hoped would be some decent cover.

The desk turned out to be shitty cover because it was made out of that composite cheap ass wood. I rolled to a squatting position and started firing at Hugh as he methodically shot my cover to shit. The guy must have been a carpenter at one time because he was doing a damn fine job with the woodwork.

The .45 empty I let it drop from my hands and brought the VEPR into play. As I poured the fire on Hugh dashed across the open area as my rounds chased him across hitting nothing but the wall across from me. Hugh wasn’t saving any ammo for a rainy day either and he fired at me as he ran.

As I was attempting to reload the VEPR, I heard Hugh drop his magazine to the tile floor and he snapped in a fresh magazine. He came around the corner and into the office shooting. Old Hugh must have had balls the size of watermelons, but I intended to bust them. My hands slick with blood I couldn’t get a proper hold on the mag to load it so I dropped it and released the VEPR.

I lunged to my right as I reached back a seized my shotty. Hugh’s biggest mistake was that he left his position of cover. His second biggest mistake was that he dumped every round in his thirty round magazine before he had made it ten feet into the office. His third mistake was pissing me off and getting caught out in the open with an empty gun in his hand. I had some really cool scary shit I wanted to say but this wasn’t a movie so I promptly made Hugh’s head disappear into a pink mist of blood. I put second round between his legs blowing his balls off before he collapsed to the floor. What? I told you I was going to bust them.

I staggered like a drunken Irishman on St. Patrick ’s Day out into the hall and made my way to where the kids were kept. I found the office door and checked to see if the door was locked and it was. This was turning out to be a real shitty day for me.
The door opened inward and I really didn’t have time to go looking for the key. I stepped back and kicked the fucker open. The door went flying open and I went flying on my ass in pain, I had totally forgot about one of the reasons I was hurting so bad. Freaking gunshot wounds hurt, and especially when you do stupid shit like kick doors open.

Sitting there on my ass, I looked into the room and could see the four kids huddled together. It took me a second to realize why I could actually see them in the unlit room, false dawn had approached. A jolt of adrenaline shot through me and I got to my feet. Dawn was approaching and dad said they would be dead by dawn if I didn’t get them out.

I took a breath and calmed myself so that I wouldn’t yell or scream at them to get their asses moving. I told them who I was and that I was there to help them and take them somewhere safe and that they needed to come with me because they were in danger. I knew I looked like death and I must have been scary as hell to look at but they all stood right up and walked out of the room. They must have been prisoners for quite some time because they were so docile and subservient.

We made our way outside to the truck . I pulled the tailgate down and had Rommel hop in and I closed it. The four of us piled in the cab of the truck and I cranked it up. As I turned out of the parking lot, I looked back towards the center of the small town and was chilled to the bone to see hundreds of zombies walking our way. I put my foot in the gas spinning the tires and headed home.

Thankfully the drive to the lodge was uneventful and we arrived as the sun began to peak over the trees. Dan was in the guard tower by the gate and pointed his rifle at the truck as we approached. Twenty yards from the gate, I stopped the truck and got out.

Dan yelled back down into the compound and then disappeared from site as he made his way down stairs. Everyone was standing at the gate as it opened and I drove in. Sam ran up to the driver side and jerked the door open. The first thing she did was grab my face and kiss me which would have been wonderful had my face not been cut open and the wound being crushed by her hand. The second thing she did was just look at me and tell me I was in so much fucking trouble and to get my ass to the infirmary.

Once I parked in front of the lodge, I exited the truck and collapsed to the ground. I vaguely remember Ju, Chris, and Dan carrying me inside to the infirmary. Alex and Sam were at my side almost immediately and they shoved some pills and a glass of water to my mouth. Shortly thereafter, I was high as a kite and in the land of unicorns, and pixies.

I slept until around eight thirty this evening and was fed and taken upstairs to my room. Alex handed me some more pills but they are still sitting here on the table beside me. I wanted to get this written down before I got all doped up on pain pills again. I believe I have accomplished that. So if you will excuse me I am going to pop some pills and climb back into bed. Good night.

I believe Sam may keep Leroy tied up for a bit. I am not positive but I think Leroy is in hot water for taking a walk and getting all jacked up LOL

Well, I'd hazard a guess that its a given they are going back for all that ammo and food. Thanks for another great chapter.

Thanks, of course old Leroy is a little jacked up right now. Of course the great thing about writing a story you can fast forward past the whole laying around on your ass recovering period LOL
