It seems like a single bomb was used in the attack, but several buildings other than the main target were affected as the bomb was placed on a small square surrounded by buildings housing the oil ministry, a mall, the two biggest newspapers in Norway, and others.


I talked to a friend on the phone earlier and he told me of a facebook posting from one of his contacts staying at a campsite on the mainland overlooking the island that there were kids swimming ashore from the island.

The killer was dressed as a police officer(using a sweater marked "police") , but the police says that he's not a police officer, and have never been one. He's confirmed to carry both a pistol and a rifle. The island is quite small, so this is a similar scenario to the school and mall-shootings in other countries.

Reports of shooting at Utøya, an island outside of Oslo, came around 18.25 PM Friday night.

Utøya is currently home to a youth camp for almost 700 young members of the Labour Party.

According to a witness the gunman was dressed as a police officer when he started shooting.

Police now confirms that at least 10 people are killed in the shootings at the island. An eyewitness tells VG Nett that more than 20 to 30 people are dead. One man has been arrested after the shooting.

The police see a connection between this attack and the bomb that exploded nearby, or inside, a government building in Oslo at 3.30 PM Friday afternoon.

The explosion killed at least seven people and two people are seriously injured, confirms police.

Several buildings around was also affected by the blast. The bomb exploded close to Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg's office. He was not at his office and has not been injured.

Several blocks around the bomb has been evacuated and people are asked to stay away from the city centre.

Hmm, several sources are pointing to this being domestic. Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten states that the false policeman is connected to both the bombing and the shooting at Utøya. The police know the identity of the gunman, and know of this persons "connections".

EDIT: There's a press conference with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice and the Police right now. They confirm that the gunman on Utøya was a Norwegian.(IE a Caucasian Norwegian).

According to Norweigan media Utöya has been secured by the police. Still only one suspect is known. According to some reports, explosives were found on the island.

Some rather dramatic photage and filming have been released from the island where youths swam for the mainland and safety, at least 50 are believed to have made the swim and gotten to shore. At 22.15 local time (about 2.5h ago) 12 severly wounded had been admitted to the local hospital. At the same time 10 were confirmed killed.

Apparently messages on twitter and FB as well as SMS messages played a great role in organizing a rescue operation to pick up survivors fleeing in the water. Local boatowners and other civilians resqued an unknown number of people, many with gun shot wounds. More than 20 boats are believed to have helped in the efforts.




I believe there is something for us to learn here, in every new disaster, social networks play a larger and larger role.
