Sunlight Phobia

Postby RVM45 » Wed Jul 13, 2011 12:46 pm

Friends,

What If: Fairly abruptly, over a period of 3 or 4 months; Everyone on Earth was stricken with severe Sunlight Phobia?

No one will voluntarily go out into Sunlight for any reason.

{And so far as anyone can tell--Nothing physically bad happens in Sunlight. Its simply a matter of utmost aversion concievable.}

Someone might sit out on their front porch, as long as its in the shade--but most find even looking into Sunlit areas upsetting. So during daylight hours, most folks keep their shades down and blinds drawn.

This is a pretty mild disaster scenario, as disaster scenario's go.

Crops could still be grown. Sure they need sunlight to live, but fitted with enough Headlights, all the cultivating, planting and harvesting could be done at night.

Pigs, cows, chickens--Dogs--none of them are affected.

Public transport could be arranged.....

So any other unforeseen Consequences when everyone becomes very strongly Solar-Phobic?

Is it because they sparkle in the sunlight?

Scared me for a moment.....

Sure its silly.

I was wondering what new twist could be put on the tired old Vampire myth.

HMMMmmnn....Vampires that can only go outside when the Sun is shining Brightly.

Then maybe people would be safer doing their business at Night--and hiding behind shuttered doors and trembling in terror throughout the long day.

{Should have mentioned that I'm a Writer looking for a premise...}

Lets leave the Vampires out completely--and most, if not all, Supernatural.

Everyone refuses to go out into the Sunlight.

The why isn't as important as how folks survived, while turning as many human activities as possible, into nocturnal Occupations. Putting up scads of lighting--even small cities lit up at night like Las Vegas.

{Remember: People are Solar Phobic; not Photo Phobic.....}

And they miss the light.

Far fetched?

Ever seen "Blindness" ?
How about that movie where everyone is a Vampire--and there's a World Blood shortage.

Well, most people would develop a vitamin deficiency...vitamin D, I believe, as you need either real or artificial sunlight (albeit not much) for you body to produce it.

Welcome to ZS; I suggest doing some reading to get a feel for the place. Your enthusiasm is warming but perhaps misplaced.

More people would work night shifts.

Being a whiny emo teenager would be less cool.

Goth kids would start wearing white and playing outside more to be different.

Friends. I have worked a lot with the idea that a Potentially Civilization Destroying Plague needn't come in with a roar. A virulent enough "Crawler and Moaner" could do the job too.

Consider a very contagious, and almost untreatable Athlete's Foot Fungus.

98% Have it bad enough to make them miserable--at least in 15-20 minute intensive ticking episodes; not really able to walk long distances; and needing very close attention to foot hygiene to keep it from getting worse.

30% Are in imminent danger of losing multiple toes--or already have.

About 8% in danger of below the knee Amputations.

And abou 11% have secondary infections under armpits, in crotch, or on scalp--although these generally ain't so hard to control as the foot variety.

So remember the "For want of a Nail..." Poem?

Your looking at a massive loss of production hours, and productivity on the Job.

I doubt very serially that our "House of Cards Economies" could survive such a thing indefinitely.

But the breakdown would likely be in Slow Motion, till it got to the tipping point.

Wait, so...is this fungus problem in addition to the sun phobia? Or is this something separate. All right, I'm considering this super-fungus...now what? I'm lost as to where you're going with this.

Is the fungis afraid of sunlight?

Are the people afraid of the fungis?

Is the sun afraid of the people? Or the fungis?

Do all vampires have athlete's foot?

Does catching athlete's foot make you a vampire?

Okay, so I've gleened that there's a vampiric fungis that is afraid of sunlight and so it can't grow. But since the sun is afraid of the people, it's always night, and so everybody is forced to live in 24-hour darkness. Someone accidently catches the very weak fungis, probably from showering with someone who had Athlete's Foot, but it isn't enough to make them a vampire. They still want blood, but instead of slicking their hair back and speaking with a Slavic accent and turning into bats they just shuffle around moaning for more blood. Then one fungis'd person (who shall forthwith be referred to as 'funguy') bites another funguy, and he bites another funguy, and so on...

Wait, those are just nocturnal zombies.

... Sounds like a good story to me. Call it the Epic of Funguy and put me down for ten copies when it hits the publishers. Best of luck!

OP,

I gotta give you credit for originality with your fungus idea. I would say try developing that into a story, vampires are ridiculously overdone- you won't come up with a "twist" that 350 other people haven't already thought of. We already have the classic vampire (the only real vampire imo) that dies at dawn and rises again at night, then there are vampires that aren't dead during the day but can't go into the sunlight, then there's vampires that can go into the sunlight but don't like doing it, and then vampires that sparkle. There are vampires that drink human blood, and vampires that drink fake human blood, and vampires that drink animal blood, and vampires that don't drink blood unless they feel like it. I curse Ann Rice for ruining vampires.. she took one of the coolest creatures in the horror genre and turned it emo. I also curse her clones for keeping the wussy vampire fad going.. no longer is the vampire to be feared, they just want to be cuddled. Every time a new "horror" book, movie or TV show involving vampires comes out its more like paranormal romance, and this is spreading to urban fantasy, so wussy vampires are messing up 2 my two favorite genres. Lol sorry for the rant folks.. I'll get off the soapbox now

First the world would be in denial. People would think those first few stricken are crazy. Then you would start to get the affliction. You would start to wear darker and darker sunglasses thinking. it is just your eyes getting more sensitive.

Then people would get angry. They would start rioting and going on rampages. All of those images of days gone where the peasants took up pitchforks and torches would come back to life.

Bargaining is the next stage, when people start making trade-offs and sacrifices to help deal with the situation. Some would start to think it is ok to shop in the big Wally World store with the fluorescent lighting instead of the open air farmers market we were used to. Another such a trade off would be working just four hours or so on the swing shift. Some people might try to make a deal with the devil in order to get over this daylight aversion.

Depression will set in shortly thereafter as people start to realize they cannot make their rent payments on only 20 hour work weeks. A great recession will set in as nobody is out there making much money and the economy will bottom out. More of society will become withdrawn and not even venture out during the nighttime.

Finally there is acceptance. People will start getting used to the new way of life and learn to deal with it. Humans learn to adapt over time. It is just the acceptance of the adaptation that is the hard part.
