Just got back from the Smokey Mountain Knife Works, near Knoxville... Holy damn, if you live anywhere near this place, and like pointy objects, and havent gone there yet, do it. Hell, if you live anywhere in the eastern half of the counrty, go there (I live in Fl.)

Here are some points of interst-

1.5 million knives

The place is huge, budget at least 2 hours to see all the knives for sale, more if you want to look at the museum type displays & other not for sale awesome stuff.

The second time I went, they were having a knife MAKING class, where you could hammer out your OWN knife...no shit.

Many of company specific sections have actual company reps right there.

In addition to the regular HUGE number of knives, they had at least 10 tables of close-out knives while I was there. Like S&W folders you would pay $15 on ebay, if you really shopped for the lowest price, for $8.

Its just totally awesome.

I bought 6 or 7 knives (including my first Mora), gotta get some pics up... but for now, here is some SMKW pictury goodness-

Whenever I am within an hour of SMKW, I make plans to stop by.
First time I ever heard of SMKW, a coworker brought a catalog into work and on the front cover they had bayonets on sale for $0.99. We drove down that weekend and bought almost $60.00 worth of bayonets. Everybody in the damn factory had a bayonet when we got back :lol:

I went in '97 or '98 and got the bayonets....I am sure prices have went up some. It is about a 2.5 hr drive from my house to the store. Sometimes, the family will load up and just make a day trip to the store and stop at the huge fleamarket on I-40 for some more browsing/shopping then we'll come home.

A few other man-stores in the area, Coleman closeout store next door (though the prices seemed a bit high), pretty sweet tool store also next door. A little down the way you have a decent Army/Navy, and a few miles down the road, you got Bass Pro Shops!

... and Pigeon Forge is right around the corner (well almost) so you can stop and have your picture made with Dolly Pardon (ok its a cardboard cutout).

Lots of fun cool stuff to do in the area thats for sure!

PS 2 hours in SMKW is NOT enough time!
Last time I was there they had a lot of historical gun props too.
Plus they have a huge section of kitchen stuff, shaving products (I bought an excellant boar bristle shaving brush there)

Yes, for sure... my 2 hours was for checking out the standard knife sections, not counting closeout tables, knife making, the museums, or even the "fantasy" knife section :lol:

Tendrax- funny you mention the manhood angle of the area. Strange thing is, Pigion Forge (next door) is full of magic, comedy & musical theater of questionable masculinity... Not really sure how this area turned into a combination of off-broadway/off the strip vegas & vaudeville... And a little farther down, Gatlinburg, which seems to be similar to areas around a theme park, mostly owned by Ripley's believe it or not (Who's aquarium there, is awesome) is another strange area.

But the mountains alone, are worth the trip!!!!!!!!!!

JohnnyM, it was closed the first day, open the second... but I had not budgeted enough time/$ to make a knife............ next time!

On a side note, I'm gonna take a wild guess that the list of brands is understated, since I saw they indeed had a decent sellection of Mora knives (though maybe not the full line), and the brand is not in the list... I think maybe the list is of brands they are lisenced to cary? But they have many others that are more piecemeal collections, for sale...

Btw, there was also a pretty large section of used/estate/antique/rare knives for sale, mostly singles, filling at least 40' of glass tops. As I walked by it, a guy was painstakingly repositioning each knife (hundreds for sure, probably thousands) on the velvet, so that the distances between them were even :wink:

I am working nearby now and I really like this place. You can sometimes find better deals, but if you are like mr and want to put something in your hand to feel, it's a great place.

I usually make a trip to SMKW every year. The kids love it. Last time we were there they had Cetme and Romanian bayonets for about $5 each. The cetme bayo's looked new. I dug through the box of Romanians and found several that appeared new with the leather frogs. i didn't need them but they all made the trip back home. I think the surplus store is Ted's surplus. He had a lot of interesting gear. The kids got a kick out of the fact that Ted was wearing a big "cowboy" gun on his belt. i agree on the Coleman store being overpriced for an outlet store. There is a tool store back there near Colemans that had some neat "made in china" tools. If you can handle the traffic on the weekends its a fun trip. We always try and go during the week and avoid all the tourists.

Not to mention that Sevierville (where SMKW is), Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg sit right next to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park which is replete with beauty and awesome. Right across the mountain is Cherokee, NC with a nice, new casino and a very good stage show about the Cherokee Nation. Trout fishing, bear watching, etc. are all to be had too...it's a little bit like heaven ;-)
