In my time in the army I was taught to carry essential items whit me at all times. A tradition passed on from our SAS brothers. It’s a small Altoids tin, I carry whit me at all times. I carry what I have found from my own experience to be life savers.
1) Swiss Card light: this card includes the following.
-Magnifying glass
-Led light
-Small pin
-Tweezers
-4 head tool
-Small pen
-Small knife
-Small scissors
-The card itself has a ruler in inches and centimeters.
2) A small knife I made from a hacksaw blade (It has saved the day a lot of times)
3) Mending kit whit two needles thread and a few buttons and safety pins.
4) Imodium tablets.
5) Small mirror.
6) Button compass.
7) Small roll of surgical tape.
8) Bic lighter
9) Alcohol wipes.
10) Water purification tablets.
11) Hand cuff key.
12) Super glue.
13) Strip of wire.
14) Assorted bandages.
15) 2 zip tyes
16)$50 dollers (not shown)
I wrap the tin whit a piece of Marpat Self-Cling Camo Wrap. This stuff has a lot of applications.

A mini survival kit is intended to be carried all the time and is usually designed to complement other survival tools. I use the contents of mine all the time; I replace them when I do.
Make one to fit your needs. A fishing kit has no place in mine because of the places I go; but that all depends on your area.

Edwood,

Is that a petrified or wooden finger? Also I like your Altoids tin.

And to keep with the theme

It’s a hard plastic zombie finger. I bought it at an Indian trading post in Big Bear Lake. Drilled a hole in it and sharpened the finger a bit, I use it as a kubutan. Very effective.

I just got a new bag and finally finished cataloging all my gear decided to take pics of it as I went as well. All of my gear is budget stuff sifted from surplus, wally world, sporting stores, things i have made myself, and just junk Ive had for ages lol. First off I was using a austrailian style ruck as my main bag and smaller zipper pouches for each type of gear. The ruck was great for a day pack but after a couple of miles with 30 lbs of gear it started trying to eat my shoulders for a snack, so after a winter overnighter to shake out the bugs I decided to try a frame pack with a civi look (the whole grey man blending thing escapes my wife when i told her I was looking for a new pack less military looking) So after drooling myself into dehydration at REI and on the net I went with a lower cost alternative. Wallmart to the rescue enter the Coleman Max Elate 65L, For the price this pack seems to be pretty well made. $69 gets you a 3966 cubic inch capacity pack with seperate sleeping bag pocket on the bottom, internal bladder pocket, internal frame, more padding on the straps and load belt than my pillowtop bed, adjustable belt, chest and shoulder straps, Rain fly, 8 pockets ranging from baloon side pockets to a small zipper pocket on the belt for a compass. I loaded my gear and a full load of water for a total of 40 lbs and took it for a test run 2.5 miles in 30 min along the jogging trails in the neiborhood. I was very happy with it especially the camelback tube strapped to the shoulder strap.

Tactical Tailor Horizontal E&E Pouch - Survival Kit:

After some time eyeballing the Horizontal E&E Pouch from Tactical Tailor, I picked one up while on vacation recently. This is a great pouch with lots of pockets and internal organization. Originally I was going to use this for an admin pouch, but decided it made a much better survival kit pouch. Total weight with all of the contents listed below is 1 lbs. and 1.3 ounces (17.30 oz., or 491g). The BK11 fits perfectly in the void space when the pouch is zipped up, leaving room for a hank of paracord on top of it. Many of the ideas here are from browsing other folks’ E&E pouch setups online.

*Tools / Utility:
BK11 Becker Necker Knife w/Kydex Sheath
Sterling Sharpener
Paracord
Aquamira Frontier Straw Filter
Katydyn MP1 Water Purification Tablets
Suunto Clipper Compass

*Signaling:
UST Starflash 2x3 Signal Mirror
UST Jetscream Whistle
CountyComm Maratac AAA Flashlight
Spare AAA Lithium Batteries

*Firemaking:
BiC Lighter
Spark-Lite Firestarter
Tinder Quik x 5
REI Stormproof Matches x 10 (w/Striker Strips x 2)

*Medical:
FAK - Bandages
FAK - OTC Meds
FAK - Ointments

Image

Image

Image

* UPDATED BELOW *

Made a few changes to the Tactical Tailor E&E Pouch Survival Kit:

Removed Sterling Sharpener - Added DMT Diamond Mini-Sharp.

Removed Maratac AAA Flashlight - Added Fenix E05.

Swapped out full-sized BiC lighter for a Mini Bic.

Added water storage bag.

Added BSA Hot Spark firesteel.

Alright, it's been a long time coming and I still have a few shortcomings, but here's my first Bug Out Bag. Keep in mind that this is also my camping pack and comes with me for firewood, so a couple of things might seem a little odd (3 pairs of earplugs, Hutch? Really?)

The bag is a large ALICE, with the Military Sleep System strapped to the bottom. I do have an Eureka Timberline 2 tent, but it hasn't been incorporated as the bivy system is already fairly heavy...we'll see how things go. I am fairly happy with the bag itself...it's difficult to organize the main compartment, but for $20 it does well enough. All things considered, I've accomplished my two goals with it: I -have- a bag, and I can identify what I do and don't like about it for when I decide to upgrade.

The MSS is attached with 550 cord tied through the plastic D rings on the carrier and the bottom holes on the ALICE frame. Just today I took two ALICE clips and clipped the strap guides of the carrier to the bottom webbing of the pack...but it's looking like that puts too much strain on the strap guides. we'll see. I have yet to camp with just the bivy...I'm hoping to attempt it soon.

Image

The pack, loaded...I estimate 40-50 pounds, but need to find a scale.

Image

Image

Tools and equipment in my outer pockets:
-Gerber camp hatchet
-Mora Bushcraft knife (I love this thing, excellent knife, especially for the price)
-550 Cord, ~200 ft
-Obenauf's Boot Grease
-Army Surplus Snare Wire (would like to upgrade to heavier duty wire, after reading some posts here)
-Water tablets
-Hand, Body, and Foot warmers
-Glasses
-Work Gloves
-Glove Liners
-Earplugs, 3x
-Glow sticks, 4x
-Lazerbrite Tactical Light, Blue/red, with batteries
-Notepad and pens

Image

Inner Compartment:

-Boonie hat
-50/50 Cotton/Wool thermal underwear
-Neck protector/balaclava thing
-Wool Socks
-Cotton Socks
-Mess Kit, two plates
-Duct tape
-Safety glasses
-Watch Cap
-Bottle of HEET as stove fuel
-Katadyn Vario water filter
-Not pictured: Forest Service map of my AO

Also in this picture are my Leatherman Wave and my bright-as-hell Streamlight Stylus Pro, which are part of my EDC, but I forgot to put them in the other pictures :P The lighter has been moved to EDC as well (was wondering where it had gone...)

Image
A peak in the cook pot...

-MSR insulated mug
-Arizona Tea alcohol stove
-Wax ball fire starters in the altoids tin
-Firesteel
-Copious amounts of matches
-A lighter
-A spoon

Image

Food:
-4 MRE Entrees
-4 side items
-2 drink mixes (Vanilla shake, grape electrolyte)
-1 Clif Bar, hidden deep so I don't eat it for fun
-1 Datrex 3 day bar

Annnnd some things to make life a little more enjoyable during the Breaking of The World. I think I need more tea, though.

I took a picture of my FAK, but I'm not posting it because as an EMT I'm slightly embarassed:

-2 Tourniquets
-1 ABD pad
-Misc. 4x4s
-Tape
-Nitrile gloves
-antiseptic wipes/iodine ampule
-Ibuprofen
-Benadryl
-Throat drops
-Spare contacts

Not pictured is my AR-15 with three spare mags. One of those mags will be with the BOB shortly. My rain poncho also seems to be missing....hmmm. I don't recall taking it out.

My thoughts, observations, and goals:

I need to improve my water carrying/processing capabilities. I'm going to go stuff a trash bag in my pack at least. I had a Klean Kanteen that was going to go in, but it's gone MIA. For backpacking, I just stuff my camelbak bladder in the main compartment....one of those side compartment add-ons might be in order. After that I need to work on the FAK, which is a bit woeful at the moment. I would like a few more 4x4s, at least two pressure dressings, some butterfly sutures, an occlusive dressing or three, some kerlix and at least one roll of koban.

I also need to procure two bandanas, for water gathering, slings, and their myriad other uses. Eventually a gas mask will be in order with a couple of filters, and I would like one of those Tyvek suits so I can have at least some protection in the event of a chemical emergency. I'm also in dire need of a compass, and I would like to have a shovel on there.

I'll have my CCW soon, so I'll have a more consistent form of protection that doesn't rely on my having my rifle at hand. I would like to get a slingshot, and I will be putting a fishing kit together this week as well. I also would like to have some sort of edible plants guide in there, though I'm -fairly- familiar with the dominant species in my area.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Anything missing that I'm not aware of?

I would love nothing more then to have my assault vest on and my M4 strapped to my chest if I ever had to bug out. But chances are pretty good that at least for the first few days there will be some form of authority still in charge. Whether it is local police, state police, or the military. I am certain an M4 hanging on your chest will get you arrested or shot. MY plan is to bug out with a nice pair of dockers, polo and a good pair of walking shoes like Nun Bush. My goal is to look like a lost and displaced business man. Here is what I have come up with so far but it is still a work in progress.
Condor 3 day assault pack "currently looking for a civilian pack that is as tough"
Image
Image
Here is what is in the bag now, and yes everything you see is in the bag and there is still room for my clothes!

If you're wondering why the small arsenal is in the pic - wonder no more.

Image
Close up of MSAR STG-556 with 6 30rd pmags, Glock 22 with 7 15rd mags and a kel tec 380 2mags
Image
Water needs Katadyn water filter, two stainless steel water bottles, purification tablets, and spare water bladder. Also in pic 150' of 550 paracord.
Image
Two fire starting kits, one stays in bag, the other in my pocket. A few 12hr candles and 20 citronella candles plus bug spray. Bugging out in Florida gives new meaning to 'bugging out"
Plus assorted flashlights 'all LEDS', spare batteries, scanner, Cold Steel Kukri machete, black bear classic 'perfect for beheading zombies in close quarters', Benchmade Nimravus 'camp knife' with custom Kydex sheath. SOG auto, Benchmade Osborne, a 'neck' knife. Also a nice pair of leather 'weighted' gloves and a knife sharpener.
Image
3 day food supply, stove with fuel, spork and stainless cup, bug net, light rain jacket, notepad and first aid kit.
Image
Almost forgot military rain poncho/shelter in back ground.

$50 CTD pack holding up great with good storage and attachments
From left to right:
50 Ft camo rope
50 Ft paracord
Survival Blanket
Multiuse Utensil (Good knife, fork, spoon, cork opener, bottle opener)
Hydration bladder up top 2L
TP
Particulate water filter field serviceable
FIre starting bag (3 Sources of Fire - Lighter Matches Flintsteel) and some tea candles
Longer term emergency candles
Field first aid kit
Localish maps
Sturdy little (heavy) axe
Eyeglasses with protective case (for when contacts can no longer work)
Ka-Bar Fighter (paracord tied to side of pack)
Biodegradable Soap
2 - 72 hour Datrex emergency rations (6 days of emergency rations energy packed)
Potassium Iodide Pills (enough for a few weeks)
Compass
LED headlamp
US Army survival guide
Finnish gas mask

Top left:
large poncho and camo elastic pack cover that works great

I didn't pack extra clothes because I could care less about smelling good when the SHTF. Sleeping bag would be attached to the outside as well.
I also plan to have a large expedition hiking pack filled with food so my SO can take this small light BOB and I can carry a months worth of food in the large pack > would then put camo packcover over expedition pack to make it blend

I've had a few members ask if I sleep on the ground since I had no sleeping accommodations showing in my B.O.B. HELL NO!!!! There are all kinds of critters in Fl that would love to crawl up your ass, bite you or both!
I sleep in a ProForce Jungle hammock, tarp, and a lite fleece blanket. When it gets "cold" down here I throw in a lite weight sleeping bag.
Also in Pic a GoalZero Guide 10 Solar charger. All device batteries have been replaced with rechargeable batteries plus 4 extra AA, 4 extra AAA. I love my gadgets and was carrying around 10lb of extra freaking batteries. Nomad 7 charger and spare batteries about 2 1/2 Lb

Here are the contents of my BOB, this isn’t everything I would carry when the said name disaster happens, just what’s in my pack. This pack was made just to get me from my current location to my family’s country house 30 miles out, should I need to walk. The terrain is literally half urban and half farmland between here and there.
Any intelligent comments, questions, critiques are welcome, just message me. Keep in mind this is not my entire survival system, which is something I hope to share soon.

Image

Camelback bladder
6 main MRE meals
6 MRE side
6 sports bars
Hard candy
Power bar electrolyte drink mixes
JELL-O boxes, probably the cheapest calorie supplement for those who have the stomach for it, 320 calories, 76g sugar, 76g carbs per box that costs less than a dollar. I should add more, they’re delicious.
Plastic spoon
Gerber folding knife
Moleskin
Gold bond body powder
Aleve-packed with cotton, doesn’t rattle
Potable aqua
Bandana
Nalgene 1 quart (BPA included)
3 pairs white socks
1 pair thermal socks
Silk PT shorts w/lining cut out (the best damn undergarment in the world in my opinion)
Under armor cold gear pants, shirt and balaclava
Nomex neck gaiter
Large military poncho
4 bungee cords
Light rain jacket
Folding bolt cutters. If you’ve ever walked through Midwest country and found a bundle of barb wire hidden under a hundred years of weeds you’d appreciate this choice.
12” pry bar. As many uses as duct tape.
Black leather gloves
550 cord
Zip ties
Sanitary wipes
Solar blanket, one side is blaze orange so it can be used as an air foil as well.
Gerber prodigy fixed blade knife
And of course, the cool guys shemagh
All this fits into my spec ops pack with my own custom paint job. The whole package comes in at a comfortable 30 lbs. on the nose. There a few things I would like to add but I feel like I would need to upgrade my pack to one with a frame and more room, this’ll do fine until I can afford that though.

Image

Not pictured is my “first” and “second line” equipment, including:
First aid kit
Compass/maps
SOG multi tool
Fire starting kit
Flashlight
Spare batteries
Signal mirror/whistle
Strobe light
Bug spray
Rifle/ammo
Pistol/ammo
I’m sure there’s more I haven’t listed, but I’m too lazy to go to the basement and pull it all out right now.

Re: Show off your BOB -- Pics Links and Descriptions Only

Postby Zues » Sat Oct 22, 2011 2:15 pm

Good afternoon everyone. It's a pretty slow day here at University so I thought I'd post up my BOB/72hr bag (or what I have of it here anyway).

Main bag is a Jack Wolfskin Trailhead III (which a relative was kind enough to give me when he upgraded to their newest Denali)

Image

Bag consists of 3 compartments (top, main, bottom) and things strapped to the sides.

Top:
1 Binoculars (Belmont 7X50)
1 Blue Danube Harmonica
1 Bolle sunglasses + case
1 pair of Sennheiser earbuds
1 Wicked Lasers Spyder Arctic III - 1000mW @ 445nm (IMO best signaling device possible. Unobstructed the beam will go for miles, also, emergency fire starter, and in extreme case, wound cauterization)
1 Whet stone
1 Gerber Fatty folding knife
1 Worst Case Scenario handbook (unfortunately, Zombie Apocalypse isn't covered lol)

Main Compartment:
1 small blue drybag - 1 Katadyn water filter + accessories
1 med orange drybag - 2 head lamps
1 75yd roll of Gorilla tape
1 Cigar case - containing R&J Cedros #2 (my personal favorite smoke)
1 Cigar cutter
1 Folding Barlow knife

1 Tent (sleeps 2/3)
1 20* Bag +stuff sack
1 201 piece outdoor med kit
1 MSR Reactor Stove +Jetboil fuel (110g)
1 75' Green poly line
2 ~50ct bunches of zipties (1 large, 1 small)
1 pair of jeans
1 pair of cargo pants
2 pairs of boxers
1 Hot Chili long johns
1 pair of socks
1 Carhartt button up
1 Khul fleece pullover

Bottom:
2 Coleman fuel canisters (220g)
1 Jetboil fuel (110g)
1 pair of soccer socks
1 REI water proof bag with - 1 Bic lighter
1 toothbrush
1 Firefly 3 stobe beacon
1 metal wire (75')
1 Thermal Blanket
1 Dovo 5/8" straight razor in faux tortoise shell (gotta keep the beard at least somewhat clean lol)
1 set of lead sinkers

1 Field & Stream rubber gloves
1 small box of fishing tackle
1 Leatherman Wave

Outside of bag:
1 Meyer Co Machete (serrated on backside)
1 SOG Fasthawk Tomahawk
1 SOG fixed (swivel) blade
1 South Bend Eclipse collapsible rod
1 Bike lock
1 BackTrack GPS (3 waypoint storage, extremely simple GPS)

Pretty sure that covers everything. Bear in mind these are only the things I brought to school from home. If I were at home I would have added:
1 9mm Glock 19 (2 spare mags)
1 .22lr Glenfield/Marlin model 60 (+Optima 4 X 32 scope)
XXXX number of .22 rounds that I could carry comfortably and safely

Things I pocket carry every day:
1 Pilot G2 pen
1 Benchmade 580 barrage
1 Moto Droid X2 (with I don't know how many Survival guides/helpful .pdfs on the card)

Next acquisitions to add:
1 Goal0 Solar charger, (I can't decide between the 7W and the 13.5W)
1 large water bladder

Overall the pack weighs ~45lbs but is extremely comfortable. I do need to do some streamlining/weight reduction though. Looking at a bivvy or a Hennessy Hammock to replace the tent.

GHB

Image

note;
- stays in the boot 100% of the time,
- for across city transit only,
- 20-40km range for 1-2nights in urban area.
- topical climate and above freezing in winter
- likely have EDC bag available ontop of this.
- serves as overnight bag

- red FAK (separate to ghb in boot, but stays in car)

GHB front pocket (high availability);
- panadol
- tissues
- alcohol wipes
- fenix e01 AAA torch {dx SKU 13006}
- 2xAA usb charger to boost phone (plus a usless light on it). {dx SKU 30251}

GHB main compartment(all ziplock sealed);
- nylon jacket
- shirt
- small water + thin cup
- toilet paper
- cheap cordage
- spare AAA & AA (all devices stored empty)
- 2x tissues
- poncho
- space blanket
- large rubbish bag
- spare ziplock bag
- cassette tape sony walkman (2xAA) + earphones
- dust mask
- food (1xnoodles, barley sugars, sugar sticks)
- matches

- tire gauge
- romisen AA torch {SKU 3607}
- cloth tape
- umbrella
- usb charge cords
- tick-tacs
- sunnies
- pen & paper

- leatherman squirt ps4 on keys

for scenarios
- trapped by flood waters(other events)
- camping in car
- walking home
- if i have my EDC sitka available i will dump items over into that if i have to leave the car behind

issues,wants&changes;
- ghb needs usb charge cord - vulnerable if i forget the one in the glove box
- ghb needs boxes for better overnight
- smaller radio (walkman is all i had spare)
- food in a hot car is hard to store
- removed headlamp for INCH

EDC bag, BOB and INCH addon bag separate to this unit.

Well here we go... not quite finished yet and needing several more items... namely a water filter of some description and some personal hygiene kit amongst others. Not shown are my Camelbak bladder (being used on another bergen) and a few bits and pieces that are currently MIA due to a house move that Ive just done.. Any questions or thoughts, please feel free to flag up !
