What's the difference between the Hilux and the Tacoma? Just looks like the front clips and bumpers are a little different to me.

I've been lusting after a diesel 110 or 127 for a loooong time.

My cruiser is a BJ-44. 4l 4cyl Diesel, 14" longer wheelbase than an FJ-40. I can do 75 on the highway no problem and get 25mpg mixed hwy/city.

And yes, I remember Ferrets being cheap. I also don't recall a major supplier of tools/replacement parts.

What's the difference between the Hilux and the Tacoma? Just looks like the front clips and bumpers are a little different to me.

The Tacoma and Hilux differ on frames. aswell as engines/drive-trains. the Tacoma is based more on the 4Runner, sharing a frame. The Hilux continues in its own form.

long story short. The Tacoma and Hilux are 2 seperate trucks. While TopGear has done some crazy stuff to Hilux, i wouldn't buy a Tacoma on that. long story shorter, the Tacomas still a top small truck

fridge
80 watt solar panel to go with my 20 watt panel and dual batteries
on board air with a tank
decent stereo
sound insulation
and a complete rewire without any Lucas products involved...

That'd get me a super reliable, extremely capable, long distance tourable truck.

There is a niche that the Toyota FJ Cruiser fills perfectly.

Before I bought my Wrangler I attempted to purchase an FJ Cruiser. If the financing had gone through the FJ would be my ride. The Toyota will last longer and on road it is the better vehicle and off-road, though it's close, it is better for dessert driving with the Jeep edging it out, again, it's close, in every other category and it has more aftermarket parts to upgrade it to approach the reliability of the FJ.

If you are looking for the ultimate BOV for a family of 1-4 that is going to double as a daily driver or second car, either vehicle, JK for 1 or 2, JK Unlimited for 3 or 4, or the Toyota, would be hard to beat.

If you don't believe me feel free to take both on a test drive or just ask SMoAF what he thinks of his.

I wouldn't own an oldschool landcruiser if I hadn't found my BJ-44. Much as I wanted an FJ, I couldn't justify the tiny vehicle or its atrocious gas mileage and highway speeds.

With my 44, I can do 60 no problem, and have gone as fast as 80.

I get 25+mpg mixed hwy/city.

It's diesel.

It's 14" longer than an FJ, which gives me a bench seat, and a much smoother ride overall.

I would love to own a Toyota. But they continue to fail by my standards. For several years, I wanted a Hilux. No dice. Then I wanted an FJ Diesel. Again, they said no. Apparently Americans don't want the Toyota trucks that I want. Stupid fuckers. I check Craigslist regularly for a Hilux to show up, but typically they are pimped by idiots and have HUGE tires with nothing to compensate (not even the speedometer) and a bunch of lights that might not even be allowed to be wired on the road (I haven't checked on that recently). Oh, and stickers, lots of stickers.


Toyota: if you are reading this, please, the USA needs the Hulux. Market it as the Tundra XL or something. I don't give a shit. People will buy it because of the "X" in the name.

actually in the early to mid 80's did have a 4 cylinder diesel available as an option in the rangers. too bad they dropped that from the lineup. imagine where the ranger could be in the small truck market in the u.s now.
