I pulled a trigger on Crypto's CB recommendation.

I think you'll be pleased as hell with the CB. I've had mine for 3 years and never regretted it.

Cool, I like that it's not a bulky unit and seems to get good reviews. The price is a plus.

So, I got my CB station and installed it.

I used to have a CB for a short period of time back in the 90s. I could have set on the parking lot of my apartment I lived at and I would hear conversations on at least every other channel. Things have changed. :? In 2 days all I heard was two truckers exchange brief hellos. That was it. And, that was in a really close proximity to a turnpike. Times have changed.

if cell phones were always the perfect option. but they arent. anyone that has gone offroading in colorado, there are lots of areas where there is no cell phone reception for miles and miles and miles, in the mountains. i can drive 10 minutes west of Fort Carson out in the mountains and my cell is absolutely useless. but out in those areas, cb chatter is going on all the time, due to that reason.

those are the types of areas that a cb is the difference between life and death.

Absolutely true. But there are very few interstates these days without cell signal.

even on the mid east cost, there are plenty of areas with no cell phone reception... for me its cheap insurance. BTW just as a heads up I am Pennsylvania born and bred, so it's not like I wouldn't know.

I am glad you are dependant on modern cell phone technology. But if the worst case scenerio happens and TEOFTWAWKI occurs, cell phone usage will eventually fail. Will it happen, who knows, but I like being preparred.

Do you want to be stuck on the highways when TEOFTWAWKI kicks off and be stuck in the impending congestion.. me i'm not gonna be on the highway as much as possible.

BTW if you are so ant-cb why are you in here talking about them?

Actually, I agree with everything said by both of you.
I don't think airballrad is anti-CB. He is merely explaining the reason for low amount on CB chatter these days.

But, you are right! I did get the CB for the reason of being prepared and emergency type comms! However, I also got it for a Hobby reason, hoping to get into HAM later. Therefore, I am a little disappointed about such low popularity of CBs these days.

Oh, I'm not; didn't meant to come across that way.

As CipherNameRaVeN suggested, I was just trying to point out why you're not going to hear as much chatter at a house near the Interstate as you would have in the past. On the road, there's still a fair amount of noise just because so many people are moving past each other. But if you're not near a major junction or a speed trap, you may not hear much standing still.

I have a couple CBs (more, if I can get them back from my brother), and a small pile of blister pack FRS/GMRS radios ready to roll if SHTF and central comms are out. I'd even like to get into HAM, but that's taking a back seat to other priorities. Being an IT/Networking/Telecomm guy by trade, I know exactly how fragile centralized systems are in certain scenarios.

Most of the CB traffic I hear around here is in spanish. The rest is some guy trying to jam them by telling them to go home, they aren't welcome here.

If they are, then they're not too bright. I know a lot of State Patrols still monitor CB channels sometimes, and I have to imagine there are a decent number of Spanish-speaking patrolmen these days.

Exactly! That is exactly when they should use the cell phones instead of Citizen Band. Dumb Asses!
