you guys got me wanting to get a ham radio now. from what i understand i can get one and listen in but i wont be able to transmit. is that correct a lot of information to gather in at once. been taking practice tests online and it seems simple enough. I'm a 4th year electrician apprentice so i already learned most of the technical stuff from my classes

You can get a radio and listen to it, noting illegal with that, you just need the license to legally transmit.
Good luck!

What's your location?

The rules vary depending on where you are.

The technical stuff is part of it, but you will still need to study the rules and band plans. "Good operating procedures" as they say.

Good luck, it's a fun hobby.

Yep, anyone can buy and listen in on a ham radio. Just wait to transmit til after you get your FCC issued callsign. I was a paid and active member of my local ham club and had a portable 2 meter ham radio for more than 6 months before I got around to taking the exam and getting my call.

Yeah, find a local club. They'll help you pick a radio, set it up, and get a license. And they'll be happy to see you.
