Fitness Goals

Postby madwolf » Fri Apr 08, 2011 6:14 pm

So, with all we do do prep it occurred to me that I was lacking in the most basic of all preps, me. Running is the most basic of all survival skills. If one cannot simply run from danger, or run too rescue, that may spell the end. When I realized that for all the working out I do that I couldn't run a block to save my own life, I decided that something must be done.

My goal is to be able to pass the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) by August.

To that end, I work out 3 days on and one day off, and run a few miles every other day.

Hopefully soon I'll be able to run a solid mile without stopping and be able to build from there.

Anyone else have any fitness goals for this year?

I've been doing P90X for a year now. I hope to continue to be able to do so. I now use a modified version of the program more well-suited to my needs, but I still think it's an excellent program.

I haven't looked into that one yet, how is it?

I've been loooking into crossfit, but, I figured I'd get myself in some form of a shape that wouldn't have me dying after their daily workout

I love it. I have seen tremendous improvement in myself over the past year. Works great. There are threads elsewhere going on about this - I think there is one in Off-Topic.

For those out of shape, P90X is not the way to go. You might consider trying P90 (minus the "X" - it's not "extreme," but is still a vigorous workout).

Sounds pretty good Doc, I'll have to do some checking into that.

For now, I'm just working on a basic daily workout and running. Hopefully I can get up to running an entire non-stop pretty soon

Running has certainly shown me just how out of shape I really am!

I got into running last year and ran in the Pittsburgh half marathon last May. There are also a lot of run/walk events in Pittsburgh to raise money for cures. As a group we donated $150 to the run for the cure last year. All good motivators to give you incentive to run.

Sounds like a good idea! I'm all about any opportunity for a charity event, especially if we can raise awareness of both ZS and the cause represented by the event. Does some good for the community and makes us look good too :)

And on that note, I'm out the door to take my fat ass for a run

For the first time in probably 25 years I ran my entire run without stopping! 2.2 miles solid today, if you would have asked me yesterday if I could run a solid 100 yards I would have replied "not if I was being chased with a gun"

I've done three 5ks this year for the first time in a long time and am down 35 pounds. Here's to hoping more of the same.

I registered yesterday morning for my first 5k run since I was 14 lol. It's in a month so I think I should be able to hack it by then, besides, it's good motivation to get off my butt and keep up with my running.

The most important thing, really, is to maintain the effort. Like Tony Horton says on the P90X dvds, "keep pushing play."

You're right, Doc. I ran the same distance yesterday and it sucked less than the first time. My plan is to run 6 days a week until the the race. I'm sure that by race time I should be able to do it without much trouble. I can already feel my pace slowly picking up as I run without me trying to do so, so, I have high hopes I can convert myself back into a non-couch potato :)

It takes time, and it's hard to be patient. I know that I certainly had trouble with that. I've been doing P90X for more than a year (my scaled-down version nowadays) but before that I dieted and lifted weights on my own for 18 months. I've lost 60 pounds in that time, but it took over 2 years. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Good to know, I've never heard of that, have to look into it. Anyway training for the Run for Your Lives is gonna be great motivation for me this year I think.

I follow Crossfit religiously, and I plan to start training in March for the Marine Corps Marathon later this year.

The company that makes P90X, beachbody.com, has a variety of different exercise programs for those at various degrees of fitness. For those starting out, the "10 minute trainer" might be the way to go.

I'd love to start doing Crossfit, but, since I live on the road now doing a travelling job it's hard to keep up with anything  At least I can still find good places to run, but that's about it.

Madwolf, if you haven't done so yet check out the "Run for your Lives" thread on here. It's a 5K north of Pgh. It definitely is a great motivator for getting in shape!
